Andy Reid.

No doubt one of the best HC's of his generation; five trips to a Conference Championship and one to the SB make that hard to dispute on the facts. Even more remarkable that he did all of that without a franchise QB. But, the tragic turmoil in his family sure looks like it may have taken a toll on his focus.

Reid is still relatively young (54), even though his excess weight makes him look older (at least to me). IMHO, he looks like a candidate for a "year off" to rehabilitate physically and mentally and then come back better than ever.

You wouldn't have considered McNabb a franchise quarterback? He was no Tom Brady or Peyton Manning, but he was still better than many of his peers.

I certainly sympathize with the hell that Reid's family has gone through but in my opinion, a lot of these problems start at the top- specifically the gradual disengagement with the day-to-day football operations of Joe Banner. Banner controlled and kept the team financially and philosophically disciplined. This was a team that made the playoffs in 2008, 2009 and 2010. It was not as good as those early 2000s teams but it was at least respectable. Thats what a couple of my Iggles fans say. Who knows...

Losing Jim Johnson also hurt the defense big-time.

Those FO decisions Kontra and others mention were all on Andy. He has always had the final say on football ops despite Lurie having a GM and President (who recently gave up and moved on to the opportunity of resurrecting Cleveland) on the management roster. Despite his rep as a offensive guru and QB developer, it was always Jim Johnson's defense that set the tone and carried the day in Philly. The offense usually fizzled under any pressure. Now the whole operation is a hot mess. And a lot of that has to do with Andy's bold personnel decisions...many of which he personally had to sell Lurie on. Personally I think he's toast. Sadly his personal situation has both impacted his performance and resulted in Lurie giving him more leeway than he probably otherwise might have.

I'm probably being too hard on McNabb and reacting to those who want to put him in Canton, where he does not belong (put it this way, IMO, if they put McNabb in the HOF, they can't leave Drew out, but neither belong there).

If we define a Franchise QB as a QB who plays well over a period of years and gives his team a chance to win, then, yeah, McNabb fits the definition, but at the lower end. He had an OK W/L record over the years, but he only had one great and two very good seasons (04=great, 06 and 09 were very good), with the rest "good" or "OK." He threw for 20 or more TD's five times and his QB rating in the decade of the QB was around 85.

So, "Franchise?" Sure, you were right to call me out. "HOF?" Nope (but you didn't say that).

The baffling Castillo appointment last year is what seems to have set things in motion in ushering in the end of the Reid era in Philly. I think that it was tantamount to the Titanic hitting the iceberg... you stay afloat for a bit, but there's not stopping the eventual sinking (firing).
