Cut James Sanders as he was ONLY steady and was an asset in running the backend ,let young players play rather than think. they thought chung will take over and this has not only removed the DB leader but also made chung a less of play maker. Chung was a playmaker along side a real leader and smart safety.

Merriweather for all his bone headness he will give you 5 interception and did some thing usefull. Letting him go for sergio brown !

Even today , look at most of the 7 20Plus plays, the CB is channelling the WR to the middle where the single high safety is suppose to be ..... where the heck is this guy.

pats plan is also runs via good safety play.a place we suck.

Since many of our DB's start off fairly well and typically seem to be cut after their 2nd season I don't see how the coaching can't be a major factor. Our corners seem to lack basic coverage skills, either too far off a receiver or, when they are playing close they'll consistently draw PI calls. It's not limited to the corners though, our safeties also tend to be far away from the ball, tackle poorly and are also prone to penalty calls.
It's really hard to believe that we've been so successful at signing some of the worst players at these positions, maybe they're marginal to begin with but at best they show no improvement once they're here and more often they get worse.

It has to be a system drafting / player selection failure, as almost never once do you ever hear the name of a member of the Patriot's secondary once they are released/waived and emerge elsewhere in the league.

This is the argument for those saying the coaching isn't a problem. It's not unreasonable, but I disagree with it.

We're not talking about star players 99 percent of the time. Most players are in that gray middle where good coaching CAN coach them up. That clearly is not happening in New England. Then, when these potentially good but not great players are cut, I don't think it's so surprising they don't go on to excel elsewhere.

Let's just be honest here. There's not one member of the defensive secondary that's currently playing at starter level. Until that changes, the coaches won't be able to scheme to protect the weak links, because they're all weak links. And, yes, that does include Devin "I let who beat me on a deep centerfield lob?" McCourty.

Disagree. The talent is there. They've spend high picks on the secondary for years. It's a secondary coaching issue.

Even back in 2007 when this secondary had talent like Asante and Rodney Harrison, the defense coughed up the lead in the big game bc the overall scheme is too vanilla. Since 2007 we've had good talent come in but they regress year after year because the coaching in the secondary is terrible. They need to bring in a legit secondary coach and fix key mistakes that have been happening every year.

THANK GOD there are sane people on here who do not think the sun rises out of foxborough.

Can we all just admit and come to terms that this secondary is pretty awful, nearly every other team apart from the saints improves year on year in the back end but us.

Hopefully coach sees this QUICK or it's no Lombardi anytime soon.

To put your game at risk by having too very raw and unproven rookies against a very solid WR and no pressure on the QB to boot is very embarrassing.

(A) Having Ebner and Wilson at S wasn't by design.
(B) You can't have veteran depth everywhere.

It's the same garbage every year with this secondary. I hate how the Pats have been wasting Brady's prime years by fielding such a horrendous squad to protect 2-6 point leads. When was the last time this secondary made a game winning/saving defensive play? I remember in 2010 the James Sanders INT against Manning---can you think of any others after then?

Pay Ty Law 250K to be our secondary coach the rest of the way and we'll be in the Super Bowl. The talent isn't horrendous, but the coverage TECHNIQUES are the worst I've ever seen. It's worse than the late 90s/00s Lions

Not much to say beside pats have the worst secondary in the nfl. If there was any doubt before this game there is no doubt now when a rookie throws a 50 yard bomb to a receiver who somehow got behind not only one defender but two defenders. If I was not a pats fan I may find this secondary tying to play defenses pure comedy.

Never said it was by design,but the team has nothing in terms of veteran depth and this is what you got,two rookies out to try and protect a 6 point lead.....not very comforting

The key to teams beating the Patriots late in close games is this, when the Pats are on D is too just throw it. Even if the throw is horrendous or deep it will still work out for the opposing team. Either a pass interference will be thrown or the pass will be completed, and eventually a touchdown will be scored or a field goal made. It is not complex at all.

The talent ISN'T there,it's obvious

If this were a thing every once in a while where the defense doesn't get destroyed consistently by the long pass then you could say the coaching wasn't very good for the game.....when your secondary sucks going on two consecutive years then there are players that are not very talented including Arrington,Chung and McCourty

IMO Only an fool believes that a new secondary coach would turn this secondary around....it's talent and technique and these guys simply don't have it on a regular basis.......they are simply not NFL quality.

I don't care who is coaching this garbage back there,if you put a nice new bouquet on top of a garbage bag filled with trash,it's still trash underneath.

The team needs to look for a solid veteran and leadership type of guy at S or CB in FA next season and get someone to play the game the way it needs to be played and help those around him look better....a.k.a Rodney Harrison was once one of those guys,we need another guy like him.
