Anyone else notice Vinateri nailing a 53 yard FG vs PIT?

Look at Rob Bironas' stats from 50+. He's 16/23 with a 60yarder to beat Philly a few years ago. AV is 4/11 from that distance since 2003 and Bironas averages 3 or 4 a year attempts.

Bironas is awesome. Not only does he have the big leg, but has made over 86% of his attempts. If he keeps that up for another eight or nine seasons and kicks a few high profile kicks to win Playoff games and people will start to mention his name in the same sentence as Canton.

It was also a 53 yarder, no matter what the date.

you don't see the correlation in the difficulty in kicking long range in 20 degree weather than 80 degree?

I understood that the denser air and the harder ball made if much more difficult to kick long.

Is that what you find when you attempt your 50 yard Field Goals in a windy stadium?

Depend on which way the wind is blowing. Game time the wind was 5mph

It was in the Colts preseason game against PIT....which widely regarded as one of the toughest stadiums to kick in because of the awful turf.

I never would have thought Adam would be able to keep playing 7 years after he left NE. At least, certainly not with the ability to nail 50+ yard field goals; a aspect of his game that tailed off towards the end of his career in NE.

Apparently he nailed two 50+ yarders in 2011, too. And two in 2008, as well.

I hadn't heard anything about it until you posted this. My first thought was to wonder which team he played for now.

He's 34 and a half already. And he kicks in a warm weather/domed division. He has exactly one cold weather road venue this season, GB in December. It would take a lot more than a few high profile kicks in the playoffs to vault him past Adam (i.e. into contention for mention in the same breath as Canton), who at 39 has been instrumental in all 4 rings he possesses.

Talk about an ambiguous comment. Do you mean AV's four trips for four rings (he was injured in 09 or it would be five for four) or Gostkowski's two trips since the last time AV went?

No, I'm talking about AV leaving, going to the Colts and the Patriots having more success. I should have gone into more detail. Will Adam ever see another SB with the Colts?

if you mean the pats have had "additional" success, i'd agree. but a win in the SB is better than two losses, IMHO, as much as I hate to admit it.

Both kickers did well, just that one goes to the Superbowl a whole lot more.

Each kicker has been on 2 Super Bowl teams since the move.

Good catch. I was looking at his number of seasons played, not his age. After I read your post, I did a little research and his is definitely an interesting story and shows the impact that one coach can have on a guy. Definitely not going to Canton, but if the twists or turns of his life had been different, who knows.

And, there is no bigger defender of Number Four out here than me. I still have the scars from the flames when I defended him when he left. If he doesn't get into Canton, no other K ever will, because I don't know what else he could have done or what else a contemporary K would have to do to get in. Great stats. The greatest Kick under pressure in the history of the NFL. Two SB walk-offs (alright, one with a few ticks left).

Not surprising. Best kicker of all time.

I can't seem to find what the financial gap was between Indy and our offers that made AV leave. He would have gone down as a top 5 legend in the region's history had he stayed along till now. I wonder if that money difference was worth the change of scenery and having a large part of Patriot Nation either apathetic or resentful towards him.

Let alone all the endorsement deals...
