Patriots place Jeff Demps on Injured Reserve

I know everyone is positive that Demps is gone for the year, but I have this one thought before you shout me down and assault me.

Does Demps name have to be on the active roster list, or can his name just be submitted as the designated IR player and his roster spot left open until Sept 4th?
He would have to have waited to be placed on IR until the fourth. I guess Bill didn't want to wait a few days. One would wonder why if no shenanigans are going on.

Best guess is that Demps isn't ready to play at the next level and he caught the flu. **** happens. All of the Jets fans are probably justified this time. It is cheating if that's what is going on. It's using the rule in a manner that was no intended.

Or get this he is really injured and would not be back for a while or at all this year.

If there's a "conspiracy" about stashing Demps on IR for the season then, Demps is in on it.

And if Demps is in on it, that means that Demps believes it to be in his best interest to be there to develop for an entire year, which is not a surprising position for a guy who has not focused on football for quite awhile.

All those "haters" crying foul who want to force this guy to subject himself to the waiver wire certainly aren't thinking about what is in his best interest. They would rather seem him play for a team right now and risk injury or at the very least, having him harm his long term development.

I don't doubt this is one of the reasons he chose to sign with a team like the Patriots because he knows they give their players time to develop.

The injury doesn't have to keep him out all season to make IR an option, it needs to keep him out long enough that the spot on the roster is better utilized by a different player.
Tom Brady could have a 15 week injury and not go on IR. The 53rd man on the roster could have a 3-4 week injury and need to go on IR.

Hope he comes back after 8 weeks....he is explosive !

I understand that.

I don't know why so many others cannot see the incredibly simple (yet spot on) breakdown of this.

After reading Florio's daily bull***** story today crying about how they misused the rule, this exact thing was the first thing I thought of.

The haters keep forgotting one thing...that they CHOSE to miss out on Demps' potential and big play capability this year due to the fact that it made more sense to utilize the roster spot in a better manner. There is certainly a downside to the decision too, and that's what everyone keeps forgetting when trying to make a story out of absolutely nothing at all.

Please allow me to break down an important point or two, with all due respect:

1) Using a player like Demps as your one IR exemption would be terribly, terribly stupid for Belichick when you may have to choose to use it on any one of a list of big players that include Brady, Welker, Llyod, Gronk, Hernandez, Wilfork, Mayo, Mankins, Spikes, McCourty, Arrington....you get the picture.

Would you yourself actually make that decision? I would hope not. We missed out on a rookie KO returner who would have not contributed to the team on any other level. THAT's why Belichick "chose not to wait a few more days..."

2) The obvious drawback is that the team cannot use his services for the rest of the year. It's not like it's a win-win anyway you look at it. We won't have Demps this year. I would think that they could have chosen to dump any number of last spot guys like Rivera, White, etc if they 'really' wanted Demps' services this year. I am sure they could have made room without it being that big of a deal. Instead they chose to use a guy on the roster who is not injured and is not in danger of aggrevating any injury for the future, no matter how 'minor' or 'moderate' we choose to speculate the Demps injury was.

I don't care if they were being cautious, or if he was 'only' going to miss a handful of games or not. They have every right to choose to utilize the IR spot anyway they want to. If a guy is sufficiently hurt to the point where they feel they can properly use his potential spot on a player who isn't hurt, then they have every right to put him on IR.

There is absolutely no controversy whatsoever outside of the fact that it is the NEP and not a team like the CLE Browns or MIN Vikings where no one would have cared any less.

The ball is kicked to you, you catch the ball and run as fast as you can while using your natural instincts to cut and dash and avoid contact.

Demps wasn't ready for this "next level"???

Belichick seems to have an aversion when it comes to utilizing raw pure physical talent in a young player.

Demps could not have helped this team at any point this year??

It's a good thing Bolden got a lot of reps returning punts.

The new IR rule states that you have to be on the original 53 man roster, and then after Sept.4 he could have been designated as the special candidate.

He won't be able to come back this yr.
ok

Hey what ever you have to so you keep this kid on the roster, I rem seeing footage of him on the Gators and he really impressed me.
I was thinking, man, this kid runs just like Tony Dorsett. Dorsetts speed was deceptive because he was a big guy and everyone wore the big shoulder pads back then.
But Dorsett had full foresight and vision of the field, and was a master of angles. Its almost like Tony knew exactly what each defensive player was capable of, and were he would be in 2 seconds. He could cut, slow, turn, burst, plant to get the angle he wanted to use his speed to finish them off, and he never looked back, like this kid, until he knew the run was done. Far to many RB's make that mistake.
Dorsett doesn't have the complete skill set W.Payton had, but he was a better receiver.
I really see this in Demps. This kid sees everything and uses angles as well as dorsett did. One of the hardest things as a RB is the sweep. People think its the inside run but its not. Most of the time things are so confusing for the defense, that you just need to hit a simple open strait lane and they cant get to you until you've made 4 yards up the gut.

sweeps are different ,especially for guys like Demps with speed. By the time he reaches the LOS hes out run his blockers and is alone. Now he has to beat defenders on angles with out slowing down. You slow down like Bush juking all day your dead.
You get hit from 3 angles on a sweep and the field is cut in 1/2 . Essentially your forced to go forward toward them, and they are waiting for you, lol.

Watch the way Demps uses angles on defenders on a sweep play, and then Dorsett. Its almost eerily similar. Both know exactly were they are, see the field, use the angles ( I can only descried angles to people by saying its similar to surfing ). If Demps can catch like Dorsett. I would think you don't have a good RB on your hands , you have a great RB on your hands.

wouldn't surprise me if BB saw this, but is just trying to ponder what he has, not willing to risk the boat on and emotional response. Thats my take But might have been smart to make him a kick off returner.
