Cutdown Day: PATS DISCUSSION thread

...and before that, a remarkable percentage of posters here were declaring him gone: "to heck with 'long-term potential,' he isn't practicing!"
Considering the defensive weakness of the New England Patriots last season, one can never have enough safeties and/or cornerbacks.

What are the salary cap implications of these moves?

Did the cutting of Hoyer and Branch with above minimum salaries and low signing/workout bonuses cover all the dead money hits from the rest of the cuts?

Desmond Bishop was mentioned as a player who would be available this year, when normally he wouldn't be due to him going on IR before the rule passed.

If that is the case and GB wants him back, will they need to have a 52 man roster until September 4 in order to designate Bishop?

If not, then that gives them a free roster spot. Why shouldn't all teams have that benefit? Perhaps the Pats clarified this with the league office and Demps is still in play?

Thats my thought too. The Pats are sitting at 52 right now. Mike Rodak has said they could like receive an exemption for Waters so that isn't the reason in their mind.

I would guess that Shiancoe was kept as a TE because this season's plans call for Hernandez to be lined up as a slot receiver, or even deeper in the backfield, and another body was needed at the TE slot.

I am really disappointed in the release of Gaffney. Hopefully he will be back and I like Stallworth, too... Like to see both of them back.

Lloyd, Welker, Gaffney and Stallworth = 2007 redux.

I would prefer to have Branch back but keeping Edelman, because of the other things he can do, is more than likely what will happen. Unless, of course, they opt to carry six wide receivers but probably unlikely.

QUESTION

How many of Rivera, Forston and Francis will be on the roster for Game 2? We certainly don't need 17 front seven defensive players.

I heard BB was so enamored of Wrecksie's "AMOEBA!!!" defense he decided to go one better...the "MULTIPLE AMOEBA" ...

Five defensive tackles and six defensive ends on the New England Patriots official roster. Take into account Myron Pryor on PUP, the New England Patriots have six defensive tackles.

Is there a deadline for when teams have to complete there practice squads by? Could BB be cutting players like Branch, Gaffney etc with the hope of other teams filling out their PS and then cutting Rivera, Forston etc and slipping them onto our PA?

I read that the practice squads have to be announced tomorrow. (Saturday)

so...anyway...thanks for all the news...now I'm really down in the demps...

You really think this doesn't happen. Most people who actually see and hear the players thought he'd be out a couple weeks, at most. Not the whole year.

Yes, it really doesnt happen. Players don't have to be out for the season for IR to be the right move, they have to be out long enough to diminish their value.
Feel free to give examples of players who were stashed on IR without a real injury.

Go to JI and read about the misadventures of the most rancid, purulent, abomination of a franchise to ever pretend to worthy of being on the same field with the Pats.

That always cheers ME up!

Like most message board popular conspiracy theories, no this is not a valid trick. The players must stlll go through waivers, are still eligible for anyones practice squad, and are still able to be plucked off the ps by any team.
There is no advantage to pretending to hide players and thinking no one will notice.

Despite the uncertainty about the new IR rules (Herald is reporting Demps qualifies, others say no), is there anyone on our IR you'd really want to use that designation on? I would much rather keep it available in case someone like Wilfork needs a knee scoped or Mayo dislocates a shoulder.

I suppose you could just carry them as an inactive for a half dozen weeks too..BB has certainly done that a number of times.

Yeah I figured. I just wonder what the ultimate plan is I don't see us going into week 1 with Forston and Rivera both on the roster.

What do you think?

DA on 98.5 is reporting shiancoe was cut

DA is not really having a good show tonight imo. He has been wrong so many times today. His team is not helping, does not help that he is not abreast of the new rules as well.

If you don't use it now its really only good for the first 3 weeks of the season. Otherwise any player is unlikely to make it back anyway. And if its a core player with a knee scope of something you can just carry him on the 53 and dress someone else.

Why do you want Stallworth back? Because he was a member of the team in 2007 or to waste a roster spot? Both?

He's not a talented Wide Receiver. He never was. He's fast but he doesn't know how to get open, being a sprinter doesn't make you good at football. Theres a reason that Slater isn't used as a WR when even though he's one of the fastest players in the NFL wearing pads.

No.

You can't begin signing players to your PS until noon tomorrow, because that is when non vested players will have cleared waivers if not claimed by another team. You can continue to sign PS players all season, as long as you have room on your 8 man squad or cut someone to create it. And just so you'll know, every time activate a guy onto the 53 from the PS if you later cut him again he has to clear waivers again to make it back to the PS.
