Odd Man Out: Dennard, Cole, or Moore

I can't see Dennard getting cut with the amount of potential upside.

I think you are right. I don't imagine that he'd make it through waivers.

I'd have liked to be able to listen to the exchange between he and Belichick last night though.

I'd love to keep him as a developmental guy in a red shirted year. Too bad he can't come down with a case of the Foxborough flu.

Personally I don't think he could add as much this season as a guy like Moore--who can back up both secondary positions (even if he looked lousy in the preseason, he looked decent in camp) and has more experience and knowledge in this system than Dennard.

Looking at the big picture though, I think Dennard's upside and talent level is much higher than Moore's, and that may be the reason why he makes it.

I like this, Ihedigbo is on my projection due to ST's but if Cole can fill that ST role this group would provide better depth and coverage skills for th nickle and dime packages.

Yep, I agree with this one too.

This is the 5.5 CB and 4.5 S roster that I was referring to, obviously totaling 10.

I think it gives us the best of both worlds and allows us to keep Dennard as a developmental guy, while also having ST presence from Cole, and better coverage all around. It also allows for Moore to back up two positions instead of just one, and improves on Ihedigbo.

Moore to practice squad. Cole made it. Dennard was getting a lesson from Belichick at the end of the Giants game - I think he's gone but shadow roster.

Dennard gone? Please be a little serious.

At worst, I could see Dennard going on IR because of his injury and falling behind as well as his looming court case.

Moore won't make the practice squad...he's made enough noise to be a waiver prospect and there are teams (and namely the Colts who have the first waiver wire priority) who still want corners. Moore will have been noticed.

My only knock on Moore last night was run support and tackling. He covered pretty well most of the time but whiffed on some tackles and allowed a relatively small catch to turn into a big gainer. it wouldn't amaze me if he was cut however and the Pats decided to test the waiver wire.

Cole has absolutely made it as you said.

Nate Ebner also had a couple of lessons...do you think that means he won't make it? They're rookies and it's his job to teach them.

I'm absolutely amazed at the amount of people who see Denard getting cut. IMO the Colts would nab him in an instant. The notion is pure naiveity.

I'd love to have a Safety w/ a little more beef to backup both spots. Chung is too fragile,
and Ebner & Wilson are too inexperienced. Diggy, however, is not that player. He put on
another clinic of missing open-field tackles last night. He, Sergio & Mal Williams should not
- must not - be members of this team by Saturday. It's bad enough that Slater will be here.

What about Brodney Pool? I know that he was cut by Dallas one week after failing - then
subsequently passing - his conditioning test there. He has also played 4 years under Romeo
in Cleveland, so his learning curve should not be as steep as that faced by other vet FAs.

For now, I like others also predict that all 3 of Dennard, Moore & Cole (who wasn't dressed
last night, a probable good sign) make the 53. After Week 1, things could change.

McCourty
Dowling
Arrington
Dennard
Cole

Chung
Gregory
Wilson
Ebner
Ihedigbo (?)
Agree, and given the s/t abilities of the other 9, no to Ihedigbo

Something to remember about Moore is that he offers value at Safety as well as Special Teams.
Not really. He hasn't played safety since he was cut in the middle of last season and every other roster option he is competing against is a better special teamer.

Agreed. Moore is a terrible safety and not as a good a special teamer as Ihedigbo and Cole (or White or Koutouvides who might also get the 10th "db" roster spot).

Ihedigbo is surely on the bubble at best.

We seem to have 9 defensive backs that we are comfortable with.

The open question is who gets those last 3 roster spots. My list to choose from includes

Bolden
Scott
Ihedigbo
Ebert
Shiancoe
Francis
Koutouvides
free agents

Why? They passed on him in the draft so what would change their mind?

Personally I think he's a good kid and a talent and worth keeping, but I don't think other teams necessarily care about his talent.

I think someone on these boards recently posted that there hasn't been a single case of a rookie CB getting Foxborough flu redshirted and then coming back to be a success.

I suppose you wouldn't struggle to find many existing "if/then" conditionals that have lead to a high failure rate for developing CB's here though :snob:

Given the makeup of who we are keeping and the s/t abilities of the DBs, I'd say a LB over Ihedigbo.

Definitely a WR or 4th TE is needed.

The third could very well be a project such as Francis, Bolden, Ebert, etc

Really? I think a lot of teams would take a free shot at him on the waiver wire. Just because a lot of teams weren't willing to take a shot on him with a draft pick, doesn't means he's going to go unclaimed.

Simple fact is his stock was only hurt so badly because of incident within a week of the draft...an incident wich was a first in his entire career through college and up to that point. He gets accused of 'hitting a cop' who was a guy who grabbed him from behind without uniform or making his status known after he interfered in an altercation between him and someone else.

It was exaggerated by epic proportions.

But, as I said, just because a team wasn't willing to spend a pick on him doesn't mean they'll pass on a free shot on waivers. The Colts would be laughing grabbing a 2nd/3rd round talent on waivers!

Worst place this kid is going is IR...which could be interesting given the new IR rule just got approved.

Cole has looked really good, I saw him at a practice and he was a standout, little as that may mean he has had a good camp and pre-season from what i can tell. Dennard has the greatest upside and may be a safety project going forward. I would keep those two and let Moore go, he had the break-up in the AFC Championship game but otherwise hasn't shown much imo.

So Moore's promising postseason is trumped by an underwhelming preseason? Got it.

I vote Cole & Moore with Dennard to PS.

I know everyone tends to overvalue their own possessions (see endowment effect: Endowment effect - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia), but Dennard is not getting claimed.

He lasted until the 7th round and was injured in TC and has shown nothing on film to cause any scout/GM to second guess their previous evaluation and replace one of their own players (whom they as well are improperly valuing via the endowment effect).

If that were the list I would go with Bolden, Scott, and Francis. Hate to cut Koutivides but he seems to always clear waivers and they are deep at ST. I think Ebert gets through to PS, which I doubt Bolden or Francis would

The whole 'Sterling Moore has not looked good' stuff is the weirdest hivemind crap I've seen on this board since well, probably last week.

He's generally been right their with his guy and a lot of the time it has been hard to determine if it was late safety help from Tavon that let someone get open.

Plus Sterling has a real knack for stripping the ball, something he showed last year and keeps doing this year.

I think he's looked at least as good as Dowling if not slightly better.
