It'll be interesting to see if Parcells gets negative votes in this poll.

Is there a 'veterans committee for worthy players like H Antwine?

We knew how this year's vote was going to turn out four years ago when Troy Brown retired.

Apparently the committee took pity on the memory of Houston Antwine and took him off the ballot after multiple misses, making Marion this year's veteran sacrificial lamb.

The veterans committee gets to choose one player every five years; that's how Jon Morris got in last year. If I recall correctly they are also responsible for one of the three regular annual nominations; that would be the choice of Marion this year.

This is a slam dunk if I ever seen one.

Think there should be a separate veteran's category.. Marion deserves a close look.

Troy hands down though..

I like Fred, but how about my namesake?

And it's officially over for anyone pre Parcells.

Fred was very good.....but I'd elect your namesake first! Hands down.

Over the next few years all the Super Bowl winners roll through this.

There is that 'you have to retire with the team' thing that might complicate consideration for Vrabel & Law.

But Parcells might be on there for a little while now.

That rule should be changed to "not voluntarily leave the team."

I think they just took pity on the bereaved family of Houston Antwine and let Fred Marion take his place as the veteran that made it to the final round but had no chance of getting in this year.

With players from 2001 and on becoming eligible for the next several years there will be more intrigue in who the three nominees are than who actually gets voted in.

2011: Drew Bledsoe
2012: Troy Brown
2013: Tedy Bruschi
2014: Willie McGinest
2015: Rodney Harrison
2016: Matt Light
2017: Kevin Faulk

Some of those from 2014-17 may not be in the correct order, but it's likely to be between those four. It could be quite a while before Parcells, Ty Law, Mike Vrabel or anyone else get in. When Tom Brady and Bill Belichick become eligible that's going to push everyone else back a year as well.

It's a nice gesture by the team to leave the voting up to the fans, but collectively they are almost always going to vote for the players freshest in their mind. The longer a player is retired the less and less of a chance that he'll have of ever getting in.

The next veteran's committee choice is 2016 which would presumably be the time Houston Antwine finally gets in, though maybe Julius Adams, Russ Francis, Leon Gray or Raymond Clayborn could get the vote instead.

Hopefully Parcells will be a candidate forever. I'm sure he never lost any sleep over how much some fans felt betrayed while he called the Jets during Super Bowl week. And I won't mention the healthy inactive Troy Brown not being in place to stop Devin Hester.

Yeah, Marion was OK but hardly HOF material. I wouldn't even put him the Patriots DB HOF.

One of the problems with the 70s and 80s guys is that a lot of the best ones were only here a short time (Haynes, Francis, Gray, etc)
I always have a hard time with whether a guy like Haynes who was here only half his career belongs in a team HOF.

Seem like they draw them out of a hat sometimes. How about Julius Adams?

Good point. Maybe there is a plan- when a player who was a HOF while he was player (Brown) . add two people who won't get a vote in comparison, even out of nostalgia.

I was previously under the impression that one nominee came from the veteran's committee, and two nominees came from the rest of the voters. Perhaps that may have been how it was in the past but from what Christopher Price said today it isn't like that now. He said that voters bring up names, people go back and forth with that guy, then rinse and repeat with the next name. After all is said and done everyone votes (anonymously), with each voter casting votes for three players.

He did also say that 'a lot of people pushed hard for him' (Marion) so that may have swayed this year's vote. Whether that group got together, formed a coalition and agreed on him beforehand as opposed to someone else - who knows? I do think that it is kind of odd that Marion suddenly got enough support this year to become a finalist though.

I believe they instituted a vet selection every five years, with Morris being the first.

Incredible that it's still a political popularity contest, as it always was. Antwine even mentioned being surprised he was nominated because of politics.

I'm guessing Marion lives in the area and is a popular guy. That's pretty much been the criteria for the marginal selections.

Look at Ron Burton. I know people think I'm being mean because he was a well liked humanitarian, but just look at his record. Dillon out did his whole career in one season here.
