Building Defense around the D Line

Nice effort from some low picks, FAs (Love), but we have one Wilfork and a bunch of guys on the defensive line.

We are at least a stud 3-4 DE away from being solid.

Notice the super bowl, how Coughlin made an adjustment to isolate Wilfork and totally eliminated the push we had been getting. You can only disguise these things for so long. Wilfork is a man among boys on the DL. We're obviously not going to be able to pair him with two fairly high number 1s again, but a real stud DE would keep teams from scheming around Vince.

I also agree that he's going to wear down at this pace, it's too much.

Fanene is going to be a valuable player in our system.
I have no doubt he will be the best inside pass rusher we have had since Seymour. I also think he will be a solid 34 DE, but my hope is that his rest comes in the base so he is in for as close to 100% of sub package snaps as possible.

I'm not really familiar with him, but Seymour did a lot more than pass rush, so i don't think that precludes us from getting another stud DE/tackle if there's someone we like. I really think our defense clicks if we have at least two monsters inside.

Brace has the upside, but how often does he show it? I think it's just a fact of life that big men like that often don't have the drive to bring it play after play. Part of it is just physics, it takes a lot of effort to move that much beef around.

i want a 34 DE and 34 OLB in this draft

At this point the draft will be over by this time next week, no more guessing/mocking/arguing.

No worries, we'll still find something else to argue about

No doubt about that. I also tend to think at the same time that we could be a lot closer than many think with a successful draft.

I think one/two front 7 guys in the draft who can actually contribute will make a world of difference.

I still fully believe that we can become a top 10 (pts allowed average) defense next year. I also think the yds will come down, but maybe not to the degree that many will hope, at least not this year.

Not compairing him to Seymour, but to everyone playing that role AFTER him.

I agree that we need 1 or 2 34 DEs, really 2.
Adding 1 either helps the sub DT rotation, or the 34 base, probably not both. Adding 2 can ease both problems.
I would love to see Fanene, Deaderick, Brace, and 2 high picks make up the DE rotation in the base, and along with Wilfork provide the inside rush in sub. (A bigger weakness right now IMO)

As I've said to me Brace is an enigma, more than any other player on the team.

I like our depth at DL and it's better if Fanene is a good fit as AJ says. Of course, getting that big DE makes our depth even better, so it's all good. I trust them to know what they want at this position, their track record is good. You can't build them, they either are worth a 1st or not.

I think Wilfork's pass rush abilities are being sevrely underestimated in this thread. A good pass rush is usually a solid team effort. Wilfork might not be the one getting all the sacks, but he consitently collapses the pocket, even when double teamed.
