The point is there is a major problem with the pass defense/coverage, despite numerous attempts to resolve the issues that is a fact.

So after the 2009 season I presume you were against the Patriots re-signing Bodden, and should have let him walk. What (even with the benefit of hindsight) should they have done instead?



Curtis Painter? Do you even watch the games, or just read the stat sheet and look at 'official' team rankings afterwards? Curtis Painter has never thrown a single pass in his entire career against the Patriots!

Inside Linebacker is all set, as is defensive tackle with Wilfork, Love, Pryor and the addition of Fanene and Harrison, if we add a DT it should be a 3rd or 4th rounder like Josh Chapman from Alabama. DE/OLB is a need, but with Ninkovich, the addition of Trevor Scott and the assumed return of Andre Carter I think adding one or two from the draft and possibly another from another team's camp cuts we would be good in that department. We still have Cunningham, and Carpenter that could step up and make the team. Harrison Smith can also play sub package OLB.

I think you have to look at the front 7 as a 34 base and 4 man sub DL

For the sub, I will list all guys that are possible

DEs Scott, Carter (if added) Ninko (parttime because he plays LB too in sub) Cunningham, Carter In other words, not a lot
DTs Fanene, Wilfork, Pryor (if he isn't glass) Deaderick, Love, Brace
also thin unless you expect Wilfork to play a lot in sub, which is not a good thing

I would say there is work to do on the front 7

I don’t profess to know more than Bill about personnel, that’s not my job and it’s why he gets the big bucks, but when there’s and obvious problem he should be held accountable.

Is it your contention that BB must be able to predict injuiries and not sign players who will be injured in the future?

Wilhite was a 4th, who we got more out of than the average team gets out of an average 4th.
Butler was a 2nd who couldn't cut it.
Meriwhether played 64 games and started 40 here. That is hardly wasting a draft pick.

Last I checked, every team in the NFL has weaknesses, and all have made numerous attempts to address it. I suggest you study up on the success rates of draft choices in the NFL (as well as FA signings) so you don't come off sounding like you have no clue.

I don't know, I think you're over-estimating the need at CB and under-estimating the need at both DE and OLB. In addition I think your focus is too short-term, looking at only the 2012 season; the draft should be used with an eye beyond this season.

I see a lot of ifs in that strategy: the one that stands out the most is if the team can sign another team's camp cut that will at the same time still be productive for the Patriots. Then there is if Carter is healthy, signs, and is productive; if Cunningham shows more than he has the last two years; if Carpenter steps up; and if the team is not only able to draft Harrison Smith, but as a rookie he is able to learn the nuances of playing both safety and sub-package OLB.

Regardless of whether the formation is a 43 or 34, there will be a combined total of four defensive ends and outside linebackers on the field at any one time. Add in depth needed due to inevitable injuries, and to me those two positions are in most need of attention, other than safety. I don't know if the additions of Vinny Curry and Bruce Irvin would make an appreciable difference to those positions.

I'm not counting on all of those thing together, I only want one. If more than that happen I would be ecstatic. One of Carter, Carpenter and Cunningham is not unreasonable. With Smith as a rookie I want him as a subpackage/backup at safety behind Chung and Gregory, he played S and OLB in college and right now is a better coverage LB than anyone we have and can cover TEs lined up as an OLB. In 4-3 Mayo is an OLB, but I am operating under the assumption we go back to 3-4, where we have depth on the DL of Vince Wilfork, Myron Pryor, Kyle Love, Marcus Harrison, Brandon Deaderick and Jonathan Fanene at least. That leaves the 3-4 OLB in my scenario as Curry, Irvin, Scott, Ninkovich, White, Carter (will be back, if not on the 53 man than on the PUP) and the rest of the guys on the current roster, who we could pull another 2-3 serviceable guys for the 53 man roster.

I think adding one of Curry or Irvin preferably both would do the trick on the front 7, if Tom Wort out of Oklahoma comes out next year I would love for the Pats to scoop him up. I think that would be the best option, next year and the year after are going to be stocked with LB talent. We can also use Spencer Larson as a LB.

We all will have our version of who we'd like to come out next yr as an OLB, but that is not any kind of certainty, nor does it help us with what the goal is: to build a roster for the 2012 season.

The possibility of using Larsen as a LB makes me not feel too good physically, as they shouldn't be anything close to that bad depth-wise. If anything, he may be able to provide some help in practice sessions at times, etc. If we are going to need to use Larsen as a LB we will be in big trouble.

Curry or Irvin may or may not be there. The addition of one is fine, but does not address the other needs on the defensive line.

I think this year's crop of edge rushers in the draft is very poor. Having starting quality guys as backups in the secondary would give NE the best defensive back depth in the NFL and boost the pass defense about the same if not more than what OLB/DE help we will get and position us better for getting OLB/DE help next year.

I had to logout yesterday to feed my kids and put them to bed, but this could go on forever. I thought I’d post (what I thought was) an amusing limerick about an obvious situation, that the Pats secondary sucked last year.

I don’t have time to endlessly split hairs over pointless arguments for hours on end, so you win the argument, congratulations, the Pats secondary is great. You can also believe the sky is green and I’m sure can find some stats to back that up too. Have a nice day.
