As far as the pass rush, it is what it is. Middle of the road for sacks but also a key part of one of the worst pass defenses of all time.

None of this changes anything, the Patriots have put themselves in a good position. Basically win two home playoff games and they make the Superbowl.

They are certainly a mystery, they could win it all or be one and down. That is why they play the games. Can't wait to see what happens.

If you have been reading all the negative posts and the continual slamming by some specific posters of the Pats and worse, the ostrich mentality of some posters not wanting to note any positive and focus only on the negative, you will understand that this reaction is apt.

In other words - read the past posts of that poster and then judge RayClay's reaction.

Blow it out your arse..........nothing I have ever posted is unreasonable.....yes, Chung appears to be made out of glass. This year worse than last. Least year he got hurt mid season and was not the same for the 2nd half .... Tis year he isn't even playing.

As for the defense, it sucks as bad as I say it does.....so ago crying like a baby because someone is critical of your life's binky

This place has gotten so sick and negative, I hate to mention something where we're fortunate.

I hate to lose Carter, I assume it's for the season. My favorite player of this year since early on.

However, thanks to some other moves BB made, we aren't in terrible shape here. Shaun Ellis has been a damn good clutch veteran in the past and might provide some flexibility along with the much improved Anderson, the good looking Moore from last year and the possibility of throwing Markell Carter in there.

Negative Nancys, I don't care how much he makes or how few snaps he's had. This is one time that BB's practice of trying multiple players is going to help us. Lawrence Taylor ain't walking through that door. /Pitino

I was never a big fan of signing Ellis, but if the Pats switch back to a 3-4 I think he can be effective at least on certain downs.

Even without Carter, the Pats' d-line is pretty good. It might be a blessing in disguise because the Pats might get more agressive blitzing. It worked vs. Tebow, but we will have to see it vs. a real pass threat.

If you watch the games every Sunday, you will see plenty of defenses worse than the Pats. The Pats are statistically the worst defense based on one arbitrary measure - yards. It doesn't even take into account yards that were gained when the opponent had a chance vs. garbage time yards. That is why high powered offenses like the Pats, Packers, and Saints are near the bottom of that category. I would love to see a site breakdown yards gained in real time vs. garbage time for each team. I bet the Pats would be middle of the pack then. Football Outsider has the Pats ranked 28th on defense in their rankings and above the Saints. Still not good, but far better than the "worst defense in history" that the doom and gloomers want us to believe.

I remember in 2004 we lost our best DL Seymour for the AFC playoffs and somehow it looked like our pass rush didn't skip a beat. Those were some great offenses too, one historically great offense. This will hurt alot and no this isn't 2004, but now defense wasn't our strength to begin with. Plus the offenses we're most likely to face will be run first with medicore passing aside from maybe Pittsburgh, and Ben is clearly hobbled right now.

I WONDER if Carter's injury isn't a season ender, if he could be back in time for a potential super bowl game (7 weeks of healing) as that will most likely be an elite/borderline elite pass attack.

Amen. I love threads that (started) like this, and thoughful posts like this one. It's too bad that the simkin's and illegal contacts of the world have to come in spewing their negative crap, that adds nothing to the conversation, and ruin thread after thread. Maybe this one can get back on track.

And you're dead right. The pats D looked terrible in the 1Q against Denver. Some adjustments were made, and I think we allowed 75 rushing yards for the next two quarters before garbage time. We have a decent defense, and a philosiphy that is happy to trade yards for time and field goals. We're the #1 seed right now, with the best record in the AFC. Color me one happy camper

My oinion is that the loss of Carter will hurt the pass rush. He was also a 3 down player and so there is going to have to be some adjustments made. Will the pass rush be the same or better? I certainly hope so. Sacks are nice but consistant pressure is what is needed and sometimes that hasn't been there this year, with or without Carter.

regarding the actual thread, the pass rush looked good against Tebow and it should be noted that Baltimore, New York, Pittsburgh all have exploitable offensive lines.

Think about that for a second. It actually looked pretty good against Tebow, who essentially is a running back.
Replace Tebow with a broken Big Ben, a rookie Yates, a less mobile and barely more accurate Flacco, or another less mobile yet a bit more accurate Sanchez. If we can get pressure on Tebow, we should be able to get pressure on anyone we will face in the playoffs.

In Pitt's case, also factor in their less than stellar OL, and I like our chances. Anderson is going to step it up I think to replace Carters rush - so in reality we need Ellis/Warren to step up into Andersons old role, something I think they should be able to do. Depth/conditioning becomes a bit of an issue now, but I'm not too worried about that.

Agreed. I think losing carter will hurt the D. Carter was a beast this year....will Deadrick or someone else be able to fill his shoes ?

love the overall tone of the OP.....it is touching


there are a couple of possibilities.......keep the current scheme tendencies, and start anderson ..... don't like it because it takes anderson out of where he has been effective as a backup. problem is that there is nobody else who has played a down to stick in there to at least be able to scheme the same way as with carter. neither carter or moore have done anything this year, so they may not be ready.

the other option would be to go back to more of a 3-4 and start fletcher or guyton at OLB (assuming that spikes, mayo and ninko take the other 3 spots) and use anderson situationally

ellis is not much of a factor in this ...... he seems done

Have you noticed lately that Mark Anderson is playing with wild enthusiasm? He's happy to be here. I think the problem is that they play him as an OLB in the 3-4 and he's not good against the run. Perhaps if he gets more reps there he can eventually become that OLB but time will tell. Still love that enthusiasm though.
