Are the people writing off the Jets the same people who did that exact same thing last year?
Can someone dig up the threads from last year? It would be interesting to see such arrogance and blind homerism and could possibly be a very valuable learning experience for some around here who insist on underestimating a very tough team that raises their game when the games really matter.
I respect the Jets because they do what our Pats used to do - perform well in the playoffs. They are built for the playoffs. Good defense, able running game and a QB that doesn't freak out when the pressure is on. Throw in a pretty darn good coach who prepares his team too.
Astounding that some people never learn.
First, last year was last year. When they met the Patriots last year, I think both teams were 8-2. They were a much better team last year. They had a good run offense and a very good defense. This year both those aspects have struggled a lot.
Second, this Jets team is currently 1-5 vs. teams that currently have winning records. The combined record of the team they have beaten is 40-64. They crushed the Chiefs this weekened, but they have struggled against even bad teams recently. People discount the Pats wins over the Chiefs and Redskins, but give the Jets credit for beating the same teams.
Third, if the Pats didn't shoot themselves in the foot early in the playoff game last year, they had a very good shot at beating the Jets. Brady threw a stupid pick early. Alge Crumpler dropped an easy TD pass in the end zone right to him. Pat Chung stupidly called an audible on the punt that put the Jets in easy scoring position. Not saying the Pats would have won, but they certainly could have because the Pats had all the momentum on the first two drives.
Fourth, the Jets' playoffs runs are a bit overrated. In 2009, they beat a Bengals team that peaked too early and was declining fast and a San Diego team that always chokes in the playoffs. Last year, they beat an overrated Colts' team that probably wouldn't have even gone .500 last year if they were in a tougher division and the Pats (and I talked about how the Pats shot themselves in the foot). Winning in the playoffs is tough no matter the competition, but they didn't beat the better teams in the playoffs in their two playoff season except for the Pats.
Fifth, the Jets could get into the playoffs and do a lot of damage in the playoffs, but they have shown little that they can. They haven't beaten a good team since the first week of the season and consistently struggles against mediocre to bad teams. Anything can happen in the playoffs, but this is arguably the worst Rex Ryan led Jets team they have had. But this year there is no complete team so they have a shot.
I still think they lose at least one game, very likely two games down the stretch and don't get in. But you never know. If they lose one or both NFC games as their only losses, it does help them in tiebreakers at 9-7 or 10-6.
