He had a herniated disk, per his agent on Twitter. It would've ended his season had he been on a team. He suffered the injury against the Dolphins week 1, and may have affected him on the field since then. Keels is calling it not a career ender, but it's hard to see too much interest in a 30-year-old who will have played in just 5 games in the last two seasons.

So, this is where everybody suddenly stops complaining about his release...

Bow down to Belichick's greatness:rocker:

Well that's very unfortunate for Bodden. Hopefully the surgery goes smoothly and he's able to fully recover, regardless of whether or not he plays football again.

Well, there you go. Seems BB knew a bit more about the situation than everyone here. Shocking, I know.

God damn it BB. A little heads up would have been nice you know. How many DB's is that now that the Patriots have had on the books who have had season ending injuries?

Best of luck to Bodden in his recovery.

No impending surgery for Sanders, Page?

This won't stop some people here from continuing to think they still no more than BB does. Not saying he doesn't make mistakes from time to time, but he deserves enough credit to wait until the facts come out before saying he doesn't know what he's doing anymore.

Couldn't Bodden sue the Pats for cutting him with an injury?

He had a disk injury? And they didn't sign him to a new contract for $20+ million a year? Bad management, very bad I say.

Anyway, best of luck to Bodden.

I doubt it, it happens a lot. It's happened to a few others players on this team this season alone.

I don't follow other teams no-name transactions but I'm sure you could find hundreds of players silently let go due to injury. Bodden just happens to be a big name because he plays for New England and signed a decent contract two years ago.

I feel like all these "mutual decision" reports take out any chance of that.

Really sorry to hear this. Was he a distraction, or was that media spin in the vacuum of actual information to report on?

You pay a player 14 million, he gets hurt, and you cut him and your still on the hook for the money. BB may Have known Bodden needed surgery but cutting him still is a head scratcher.

Now the decision to part ways with him is less of a head scratcher. At least we know now that BB hasn't completely lost his mind...

My question is how was this information kept secret so well, obviously every team in the NFL knew as well, Bodden is surely a player who would have been claimed off of waivers regardless of his contract status.

I would only see legal issues coming into play if another team claimed him without being informed of his injury and having to IR/cut him after acquiring his contract.

Bodden was a vested veteran so his salary was guaranteed in week 1. Once your guaranteed money is gone (his was $10M) makes no difference whether you're healthy or not, a team can release you any time. They are on the hook for nothing more going forward beyond the balance of his signing bonus amortization against the cap ($3M dead cap hit in 2012, money he was already paid) because his signing bonus was $6M... They will save $8M in total salary against their 2012-2013 caps. Bodden has a history. He plays in contract seasons. Maybe we can sign him to another prove it deal in 2012... Only a fool would sign him to anything else...

Lol.. you didn't think he knew that he'd probably have surgery? There's no point to keep him on IR since he's so old.

What it doesn't explain is if the team knew Bodden's injury was going to end his season prematurely BEFORE the trade deadline, then why didn't the team go all out trying desperately for a trade partner to find an adequate veteran replacement knowing we were going to have pieces of trash like Brown,Molden,Barrett as vital parts of an already porous secondary?

We have enough draft picks in the next year or two to have made SOME team give up a decent player, who may not be a star but a solid addition, but we didn't.

This!! But we were wrong about Bodden so... We've always trusted in BB, and this is just a reassurance of that. When BB gets rid of somebody there is a reason for it : " For the team ". BB is the man. This is actually goods news for karma. :rocker:

If a firm decision had been made to have surgery before Bodden was cut, then IR would seem to have been as good a choice as cutting him. But perhaps the discussions on whether oand how well he could play got a little contentious on one or both sides ...
