Anyone remember these four players? even though we still have one. What made them go? and will our Offense turn back to that concept once more or should it not have to.

Those guys could afford a lot of three and out drives. They could count on their defense.

I think you're stealing Mgteich's thunder.

I think what made them work so well is how interchangeable they were. You could move them all over the place and see success from each receiver at each position.

Givens and Patten could get deep, while Brown and Branch were the precursors to Welker in their ability to get good separation within the first 10 yards.

today, they would be a mere waste of brady's massive talent......

in short, they don't execute the charlie weis offense anymore

What made these four players work was the fact that this was a RUN first team. Everyone seems to forget that. Antowain and Dillion got 20-30 touches a game.

The linebackers used to have to play closer to the line of scrimmage leaving voids in the middle of the defense. The Patriots were experts at exploiting these voids through the quick passing and play action game. The run set up the pass.

Now, it seems that linebackers are content to sit 5-7 yards behind the line and drive up on anything thrown underneath or on the Pats little draw plays. They know we won't consistently run and if they can take away that first 7-10 yards they can put this offense in a difficult predicament.

The corners and rush ends can be a lot more aggressive without getting exposed. This negates any advantage we may have by significantly disrupting the timing of the short passing game.

Everyone wants to talk about these diminutive receivers, but I say give Benny the rock and watch as this offense becomes unstoppable again. Let the run set up the pass.

Larry Bird ain't walkin' through that door...Not that any one of them was ever close to Bird in ability or achievement, but the difference is the supporting cast on defense in those days was immense.

exactly...BB is turning into another pitino.....he's going to flip half the roster every year for the next 5

I just want to know whose rejects the pats will get next year......and how many more DB's will be drafted

First, the New England Patriots need to find gems at wide receiver in the late rounds of the NFL Draft. David Givens was a seventh round draft pick in 2002 and Troy Brown was a eighth round draft pick in 1993.

Also, New England has not adequately developed a wide receiver directly from the collegiate ranks since 2002.

We've got Underwood now man.

Uh, I wasn't suggesting for a second that there is/was any similarity between BB and Pitino. That would be like comparing Renoir (BB) with a pre-schooler using finger paints (Pitino). Please don't attempt to pretend to know what I'm thinking. If I ever seriously got the sense that I was thinking even remotely as you do, I'd volunteer for a lobotomy as soon as they could sharpen the scalpel. Enjoy your evening.

We've got Underwood now man.

Shows some promise running the fade routes ...

We had a legit OC back then

Oh how I miss the deep comeback!

what we need are some Fast speedy receivers who can play the sidelines and beat man coverage...look at most of the successful teams in the NFL and they all have them.

Like I said, watching the Ravens it was saddening to see Flacco(an average to bad QB) toss up bombs and see his receiver just go and get it.

part of the problem is we never play our young recievers and throw them into the fire to learn...I think Taylor Price has promise to be a good WR and give us that kind of threat if he can ever beat the injury bug, and ever get enough snaps to actually produce
