Brian Waters is a beast.

On that last drive, when we were marching downfield.... If it weren't for his smarts and knowledge, Brady could have been sacked, fumble with a recovery given the amount of Cowboys in the pocket.

Watch the third play displayed here in this video of the last drive. The play where the corner fakes the blitz out of the coverage. They try to trick Brian Waters into taking the phony blitz but he recognizes the backside blitz and takes the guy out allowing Brady to step up and make the throw to Woodhead.

I know I might be over reacting but I think this play was key to getting downfield. If that guy hits Brady, that could've spelled disaster.

You have to wonder what Pioli was thinking when he allowed Waters to become so alienated and apparently marginalized by Haley...

Good catch re: this play. I really think Waters was maybe our best move this offseason - it's between him and Carter to this point, but Waters is probably filling a more dire need. I've been watching him closely and he seems rock solid in both run blocking and pass protection.

Definitely a great pick up. Can't believe he was on the market for as long as he was.

Definitely not overreacting. That was easily the play of the drive. Waters deflected what would have been a concussion-inducing crushing sack. And now I will get on one knee and give my thanks for that.

Also, it isn't a backside blitz, it's a strongside blitz and the corner didn't fake- he took off at the snap. Sean Lee fakes a rush then drops back to cover the flat more to try and fool Brady, not Waters. Now, what makes this a clever designed play (a Ryan trademark) is that the safety (Abram Elam) actually fakes blitzes and pulls Solder downfield to clear the path for the corner blitz, and it was only the solid awareness and perfect technique of Waters that prevented a disaster from happening.

I imagine it was less due to teams' interest in him and more to his interest in the teams. Considering how many teams wind up needing interior line help at some point, he had every reason to be confident that he could wait for the right situation to present itself.

Honestly, I thought Waters' goose was cooked when we signed him, but boy was I wrong. That was an awesome play from a guy who has really been a godsend all year.

I wonder more what Pioli was thinking making Haley a head coach. He ran Weis out of town and it looks like Weis was the true brains behind the Chiefs' offensive success because even before Charles went down the offense was crap. He blocked McDaniels replacing him. He gets into fights with other head coaches and Pioli himself. He gets into arguments on the sideline with Cassell.

Haley has been a near disaster of a head coach and when he finally had an OC who could make the offense click, he can't stand sharing the spotlight (in his defense, Weis has a big ego too).

2yr contract!!!

I want Vlad Duccase instead:p

Hahahah my fault. I'm trying to get all of that X and O stuff down. Thanks correcting me though. Appreciate it.

Nobody's fault- no harm in trying to get that X and O stuff down. Only way you really learn is by trying to talk about it, and learning from others.

What I found interesting is Pioli kept signing his guys instead of guys that could play for Haley. Why did Weis do so well last year? It's because the guys that Pioli signed were closer to Weis then Haley.

I have no beef with the content of the first post but I certainly wouldn't call our offensive line "amazing"...it's a good offensive so far but it has had breakdowns in pass protection more often than I'd like at times.Teams with good interior defensive tackles can give Connolly a hard time and I've seen numerous pressures coming from the inside this season.Solder has played well for a rookie BUT he's made rookie mistakes and has had trouble with a certain type of edge rusher.

I'm expecting the return of Vollmer, and the possible return of Cannon, to add a shot in the arm for the O line.

Waters is a beast for sure and has been sooo good this season. His age may factor into how long of an extension he gets, but they'll definitely resign him at some point.

Because Pioli knows what it takes to play in this system and this was the system he hired Haley to coach. Haley doesn't have a system, he's a hodge podge of things he's been exposed to as a WR coach from Chicago to Dallas along the way including the system he ran as a first time OC for Wisenhut in AZ (who didn't allow him to call plays until his second year). But what he does have is an ego.

The only reason he got the KC gig was because Pioli wanted someone who was familiar with the systems Bill and RAC and Charlie ran NY since the Giants days (or in Weiss case the JETS days with Parcells) so he could not only rebuild the team but change the culture of the entire organization. His first choice was Ferentz (because he was with them in Cleveland) but he wouldn't leave Iowa. Haley was the only candidate left with some experience in the system and the offense (from his brief time as an asst. to Charlie in NY). Although it's interesting to note they didn't take him with them to NE...or persue him when he was out there probably because his reputation as an egotistical hotheaded jerk outweighed any coaching talent value they believed he might possess...

Pioli has learned a very hard lesson the hard way. Have ALL your ducks in a row before you strike out on your own. He didn't, and Matt has been paying the price for that thus far... I almost think Matt's existence/availability was the reason Pioli chose the time he did to bolt. Too bad Charlie and RAC were unavailable that first season or Pioli might not be in the mess he's created three years in to his rebuild...

I know he didn't necessarily want to make it into Patriots Midwest, but you have to wonder why he didn't get JMcD to be his head coach. It certainly would have helped Cassel.

.

I haven't seen Solder beaten too much. So far he has only given up 2 sacks this year, one of which wasnt his fault. The one that he was beaten on was more a mental mistake then a physical one.

He has screwed up with a few penalties though.

Pioli went out and got receivers (Chambers, and many others, most of whom didn't pan out), a QB (To be determined), a running back (Jones, who ended up being surpassed by one of the real finds in recent NFL history), a TE (Pope) and more in that first year, and in the years since, in order to help an offensive coach, while largely using the draft to try rebuilding that team's terrible defense. He did bring in a lot of ex-Patriots and ex-Cardinals, but that's to be expected.

McDaniels had already taken the Broncos job before Pioli got the Chiefs job. There's speculation on Chiefs message boards that McDaniels could be the coach in K.C. next season, if Haley gets axed.
