I am still a little punchy after a ten hour drive back from Oakland last night and into the morning, but I had a great time. Oakland fans are some of the best hosts of any opposing professional team.

Due to a late decision to attend the game, air prices were too high to travel down there with my boys so we split the driving duties and hit the road early Saturday. The weather in Oregon was poor, but it improved as soon as we hit the halfway point of the trip in Medford. The Bay weather was perfect.

All said, it takes half the time to fly considering all the airport and ground transportation. Driving is much cheaper when you have multiple people.

We parked at the stadium and tailgated a bit. We were handed a code of conduct leaflet which everyone ignores. People openly smoke marijuana, shout profane snippets of drunken idiocy, and spend every other moment consuming legendary amounts of Bud Light. I was grateful I didn't have to use the six overworked porta-potties in our parking lot.

The Raiders are the absolute kings of unlicensed product sales outside the stadium. Some places have a bit of this. Like outside the Garden you can get five dollar Bruins beanies. But Oakland has so many shirts, products and styles that I really envy this. I didn't see this outside Gillette at all. The trick to these merchants is to wait until after the game. Everything is half price. One T Shirt depicted Tom Brady lying on the field in the Snow Bowl. The T Shirt said "F*ck Tom Brady" The "*" was replaced by the "u" shaped Raiders logo.

The Raiders fans were in great spirits compared to last two games I saw there. The most recent being the Rain Bowl game with Matt Cassell at QB. There was a sense of pride, confidence and excitement. After Jason Campbell hit the wide open defensive back in the end zone, the stadium deflated. They tried to make noise a few times after that, but it wasn't the same. They all knew. They all sat down for one thing.

The Raider fans cheered Mayo getting injured. Classless drunken jerks.

The Raiders still aren't a complete team. They didn't play to win. They commit stupid penalties, but they always have. The difference with this team is that they gained 500 yards total offense, but didn't keep going to the things that worked. In the fourth quarter, they didn't hurry even though they were considerably behind. They seemed to be playing like they had the lead. The Raider fans can't take criticism of their team and hated hearing me tell them that with my loud mouth. Maybe they just hated my loud mouth.

I was able to confirm from the stands what our defense looks like on television. The guys are all covered much of the time, but they just don't seem to be able to tackle well or make a play on the ball. Our pass rush looks like kindergartners playing Move Over Red Rover with grown-ups. One positive note is you can't run at 55. He is a sure tackler and fills the right gap. Guyton is a poor substitute for Mayo. He failed to contain the edge and reacted late on a running play. He's hearing about it in the meeting room today.

Anderson gets really low in his stance. It's a four point stance. It's like that early Tom Cruise movie where he played for Ampipe High and the defenders were in some weird pushup style stance.

I think the Carter's uber-consistent outside pash rush move is because he has outside contain responsibilites. He never seems to try an inside move. It makes him ineffective as a pash rusher, but he is very good at containment.

Wilfork seemed to anticipate that dump off to McFadden. It happened so fast. I hope the TIVO I set for this shows it better. The O.co coliseum has a very antiquated jumbo tron and they never show replays of positive Patriots plays.

We made a four stops on defense which was more than enough. The Raiders committed penalties which helped us out, but only one extended the drive on a third down, IIRC

Brady takes a pounding.

As soon as Seymour was out of the game, we ran through that side. We ran away from him every other run play. He knocked down Brady after the play once, but other than occupy his blocker(s) that's all he did.

Stevan Ridley gets the ball every time he hits the field. The Raiders finally picked up on that in the fourth quarter and were ready for it. Took them long enough to pick up on that.

The Raiders did a good job covering Gronkowski. He was wide open once and could have scored a TD but Brady had Welker on the other side of the field for a first down and never looked at Gronk.

Everything is too fast. Even though we were in upper deck yard line seats with a great perspective, you can't watch the backfield and rest of the action at the same time. If there was a rewind button, I would have much more to report.

Field game reports like this are MUCH appreciated!

Please share more about the crowd. Did you wear Pats gear (what was it)? Was the abuse directed your way nasty or light-spirited? Were you ever made to feel uncomfortable? Thanks for the report!

Thanks for the game day perspective. It's appreciated to hear the flavor of the day and the game from someone there. Much better than NFL ticket.....

I got some mild jeers. I was wearing a Patriots hat and Pat the Patriot shirt.

I was uncomfortable watching a drunken Raider fan get in a fight and tumble down twelve rows of seats. Somehow, nobody was injured.

The fans are *not* as bad as many stadiums such as Seattle or Denver. The fans will give you fairly good natured crap which I take in stride. I am not confrontational. I think a lot of them are just there to party. I've been to seven Raiders games (not all Pats games) and have never had a problem or even close to a problem.

The ladies in front of us were very nice and flirted with me and my sons all game. A tough looking Raider fan would try to high five me every time the Raiders made a play.

I am very loud and will criticize our team when they do something stupid--like give up a third and long. Raiders fan seems particularly bewildered by that.

Thanks for this Dragda. Some good stuff here.

I actually thought about flying up for the game on sat night but then I found out that the game was televised in So Cal and so spent the weekend in my pool with a big bottle of Jameson.

I was at the game as well. An injury update on what I saw from the first row on the Pats sideline yesterday...

Woodhead seemed to be hurt pretty bad at first, but after watching him on the pats sideline, he appeared to shake it off. He was walking around the sideline a bit before the end of the half, without a real noticeable limp. I thought he would come back, but didn't. He put his shoe back on before the half.

Ninkovich was shaken up at the end of the game, and left with a few minutes left. As he was walking along the sideline towards the locker room, I yelled out "you ok Nink"? He gave me a smile, nod and thumbs up.

We all know about Mayo.

Man this game was brutal. Raiders fans have no class whatsoever. They cheered every time a Pat was injured. I had the time of my life though, watching us piss off the Raiders fans.

Nice to read this! Thanks for taking the time and write this out. :)

You hit the nail on the 'game being too fast' note when you are @ the stadium. I go to a few Giants games every season (but don't go to the Jesters game because I am afraid of getting beat up if I jump with joy when they make a mistake. :D) and it was ridiculous to see how quickly the plays are played out.

I have got so used to see the analysis and slow-motions on the TV + other angles. In fact, I am unable to became a soccer fan primarily because I need to get spoon-fed on why a particular play did/didn't work and what happened in the broader scheme of things for a particular play to work/break.

Great summary, Dragda.

I was in section 139 with a few Patriot fans off to my side. This is my third time seeing the Patriots come to Oakland and it was quite nerve racking. You could sense that the Raiders fans were (rightfully) over confident going into the game. They bet the overrated Jets and were ready to exact their revenge against the team they have chosen to blame for a decade of losing.

Al Davis harps on calling his team, the Team of Decades. I'm not seeing it!

It amazes me how much they hate Tom Brady, as if he stole their lunch money. But in fairness, they seem to hate a lot of opposing players (any player for an AFC West team, that is). It all speaks to their maturity level, I suppose.

In fact, my friend is a season ticket holder and after Branch's touchdown reception, he turned to me and told me to leave the leave the stadium. Minutes later, he decided he had enough and he left... screaming F* Brady. Reflects on him, is all I can say.

Anyways, about the game...

Has anyone notice how LAZY Chad Ochocinco looks during warm-ups? It was undeniable that the Patriots take their warm-ups very seriously. All the receiver are running crisp routes and both Hoyer/Brady are on the money with their passes.

Then you #85 dogging it out there. Using his body to catch passes and not his hands. One time, missing a warm up pass down on a post route and walking right in the middle of the next guy's route as he slowly made his way back to the line. The guy isn't going to turn the corner if he is going to carry that attitude around!

And on the opposing side of the field, the Raiders didn't look like a team that was ready to play. Their warm-ups were pathetic. The receiver fielding punts dropped half of the punts kicked his way.

The Raiders gave this game away early by committing penalties and allowing the Patriots to move up and down the field. Defensively, the Patriots were aggressive against the run and seemed to allow the opposing game to open up. How else could you explain Heyward-Bey catching the ball?

Nonetheless, it was a satisfying win over a tough team and their idiotic fans.

I also went to the game and pretty much got the treatment i expected from the raider fans as even around the bay they have a bad reputation. I wore my number 12 jersey proudly but at a cost. Walking into the stadium was the worst because at least a dozen drunks walked up to me to yell right into my face either RAIDERS! or F-Brady. Luckily i was sitting on the visitors sideline and had a few fellow Pats fans sitting around me. The crowd was really loud the first couple of drives and it looked like it may have affected the O but after the first 2 scores the stadium got quiet real fast. Of course it wouldn't be a Raiders game without a fight and right around the beginning of the 4th a group of only Raiders fans started a brawl not 4 seats over from where i was sitting. It took at least 4 minutes for security to arrive but by then the fight had died down a couple people had run away. Some drunk guy wearing one of the F-Brady shirts tried to jokingly blame it on me saying that the pats fan started it. I didn't find it quite as funny as he did while the cops were arresting people before our eyes. All this happened to me and I'm only 14 years old. ;) Yeah, Raiders fans don't have much class

14? You're old enough to dish it back :D

14????...and you went to a Pats /Raiders game in person?????

You,my courageous lad, are already a die hard Pats fan...welcome aboard

The only thing you can really say is that Raider fans are well known to be one of the lowest forms of human garbage. They belong in the dumpster.

Observations from my attendence

A definite old school atmosphere. Reminds me of attending games in the old stadium in 70's/80's. It's also a reminder to those on the periodic "real fans can't attend" threads that "culling the herd" isn't always bad.

The stadium is very tough to get into and out. The concertina wire on the bridge to BART was funny.

We had only one really dumb guy in our section. I tried to arrange a hug for him from the smokin' hot girls in my row. Wasn't successful, plan B was a hug for me but I had my daughter with me.

The stadium was suprisingly good to watch a game.

My section was irrate that (filth),(filth) Belichick took away McFadden and turned it into a Campbell vs Brady game. I thought that was interesting because for some reason the fans actually wanted play that would win them the game.

The most often used phrase at an away Patriots game is, "Will somebody please cover (filth),(filth) Welker."

I thought Ocho two receptions were great routes. Fast and crisp. Too bad the third reception was called back.

Ridley hits the hole faster than I thought. We get all four backs going, it's going to be awesome and meaningfully injury proof.

Brady wasn't that sharp. High on many throws and missed Welker on the second drive. After that play, the guys in front of us mentioned that they prayed for less than 40 points.

The Raiders actually have a good oline. They have only surrendered two sacks this year.

I don't get the pass rush. I didn't expect any blitzing because McFadden on a screen is the Raiders best play. However, they do need to keep the QB in the pocket and get happy feet going.

Why do people listen to Tedy? As I suspected, the Raiders Dline was useless.

Speaking of the game being fast, the other point is you always get an appreciation of how small the windows are in the game. In second half, the completion to Welker down by the endzone was a perfect line from my seat. Primetime called Welker wide open on NFL Recap. Still, it amazing the anticipation and precision needed to complete passes.

Nice write up, and a thank you to those others who were there who have commented. It means a lot to those of us who can't get to the games to have a feel for what it was like live and in person.

Respects,

It's CA..what do you expect? haha

They did the same thing at Pro Player when I used to live down in Florida. Funny thing is, EVERYONE smelled it in my section and were looking at the row of people passing it around. Yet those guys just continued on like they were in their living room watching the game and puffing away.

You should've been to Schaefer/Sullivan/Foxboro stadium in the mid 70s, when I was 14...

Fantastic! All you guys who posted about your trip to the OC did a great job and deserve battle pay. Thank you very, very much!
