Pats claim linebacker AJ Edds

This news can't make Gary Guyton very happy. If Edds can come close to Guyton's coverage skills, he has the reputation for better instincts and play-reading ability.

I tell you guys, this is another Vrabel.

I was about to test the waters with a thread to see if anybody thinks Guyton might be wavering a bit. He is one those players who are always there(Butler, Sanders), but late as well.

This Edd guy I hear is very smart. He had a ridiculously high Wonderlic score and couple that with this athletic ability, you can see why BB went for him.
The Phins are screwed. Releasing a smart guy is not good. He knows too much.

Not to be grammar police but you have to spell all time favorite Patriot names correct around here. It's Vrabel.

Hoping your right but it seems players coming out of thin air like Mike did is very very rare.

He's about 28 lbs of muscle short of Vrabel. He can't set the edge. Vrabel was a classic big 270 lb 3-4 OLB. This guy is a rotation/back-up 4-3 OLB guy. Good brains/instincts, but lacks high end speed, size or strength. This guy will never have as many career sacks as Vrabel had in 2007.

The other poster that brought up Guyton is closer to the mark, but I think Guyton is faster. Bear in mind BB was hanging onto Guyton for a few years even though he didn't really fit much of the schemes, don't think Edds is going to supplant him so fast - but we'll see.

Guyton strikes me as a "he is what he is" guy. Great athlete, covers well, useful role player, but he's plateaued as a football player. He just doesn't show the instincts or aggressiveness to take the next step as an all-around linebacker.

I think Edds is just the kind of guy who could take away Guyton's reps, if he comes along quickly. He doesn't have Guyton's speed (who does?) but he has excellent coverage and ball skills, and may be the most natural 4-3 OLB on the roster.

Or maybe he'll be gone by the end of the week in favor if the best available Gronk.

Kirk Ferentz coaches the Iowa Hawkeyes.

BBs buddy.

This

Pretty much any decent player from the Saban or Ferentz program will automatically get a look from Belichick.

You guys are crazy. Guyton has been a solid NFL player not just on special teams but on defense for years. Edds has never played a snap -- and you're talking about him replacing a proven guy. There's absolutely no reason to think this guy is an upgrade over Guyton, who I think will have a great year behind all those d-linemen.

Pointless A.J. Edds trivia: Miami actually drafted Edds with the Patriots' 4th-round draft pick.

The Pats traded #22 + #119 to Dallas for #27 & #90 (which became Devin McCourty and Taylor Price). Dallas later traded up to get #119 from Dallas and nab Edds.

Could be, but my sense is that Guyton is already below Fletcher on the depth chart. I'm not sure how many snaps he'll see if everybody else is healthy.

Agree 100%. BB seems to love Guyton and rewards him with a ton of snaps each year, but "he is what he is" and will never be a Pro Bowl player.

Wow, he's quick for a LB... I'm intrigued. Wonder why the Dolphins let him go.

Guyton has had issues in shedding blockers and covering tight ends.. he has very good speed, and good instincts and works hard.

OTOH do not see Edds replacing Guyton, he is also a long snapper who can play LB... or a St'er, LB who can long snap.

This could be the predecessor to Zach DeOssie...

Really like this pickup. The Patriots needed a backup to Rob Ninkovich at the 4-3 strong-side LB position. Edds seems a good fit for that role. Plus, he has long-snapping experience. If Rob Ninkovich is as good a long-snapper as they have, why not use him in that capacity freeing another roster spot for a position player. Edds could be Ninko's LB backup and LS backup also. Maybe, this could open a roster spot for the much anticipated Gronkowski family reunion.

Who will police the police?

Because they are terrible at personnel decisions.

Don't forget, this is the team that decided to let a promising WR go to a division rival, only to watch him become the most prolific pass catcher in the NFL over that 4 year span. This also a team that "is comfortable" starting the season with Chad Henne as their starting QB. Using personnel effectively is not something they are particularly good at.

It might be a simple as that.

so... whose spot does he take?

Gronk got Butlers right? so who gets cut for Mr. Ed d or does picking him up bring us to 53?

Well, he is a defender that can COVER. We just dumped every member behind the defensive line that cannot cover............. What do you think.

Gonna have to use your brian on this one friend.

Funny, my first name is Brian, and people have reversed the vowels and misspelled it brain many times. But, I've never seen the mistake made the other way - until now.

Warren cut to make room for Edds.
