Former Patriots LB Bruschi Says He'd Target Foster's Hamstring

I hear you - but the thing I was trying to point out is that fact that Bruschi's not out on a limb with this one. This is more of a widespread mentality than people probably realize, and it makes the fact they tend to not want to disclose injuries a little more logical when you take this into account.

And doesn't that just suck? Really? Think about it. This game is the lifeblood of these men and they not only have to worry about how well they perform but how many others are trying to injure them while they try to make a living? Who else has to go through this crap? Just play and let's see how good you are!

I was a #8. You don't cheap shot on the field (like kicking guys on the ground - too easy to retaliate), but if a guy has a hitch in his step, nothing wrong with testing it out for him.

I often played blindside flanker, and our main rival's prop would often pull my hair! So being blindside, I could give him a few shots to the side!

He still didn't learn!

No. I'm sorry, I don't care who this came from but this is absolute bullsh!t. I cannot condone trying to injure an opposing player on purpose. I don't care WHAT is on the line. This is absolute crap.

How is trying to injure the guy?

Look at the MRI. he's already injured!!!

Basically, you are saying is "injured" players now need exclusion zones.

If the "injury" is targeted within the definition of fair play, it's exactly what you should do.

If you're carrying an injury into a game it's assumed that you're at 100% capability. I'm in the corner that does not celebrate injury but once you pull on the pads, everything is fair game as long as it's within the written rules.

Your standpoint is overly simplistic.

So I guess he'd also go after Manning's neck.

I remember in hockey if we ever found out about injuries we would definitely target them. It doesn't have to be a cheap shot. But if you know the kid has a sore shoulder you're definitely going to give him some pops there. What Bruschi is saying is done in every physical sport.

I can see Goodell taking away our 2012 draft picks for those comments.

Children shouldn't play a man's game. Some never grow up and realize that the world isn't their friend.

I wonder how Bruschi would feel if OLs and TEs targeted, oh, I don't know, his heart. Gamesmanship?

This is not a surprise at all to me. It's why these guys get paid so much money, it's why I want to watch the sport but don't want my kids playing it.

DIRTY IS DIRTY!!!! Whether everyone does it or not.

If you were a heavyweight fighter going into a prize fight and he told you not to hit him in the mouth because he has a cavity, would you say, "Ooh, that must hurt, I'll try to stick to your ribs. I hope you feel better", and then send him a card? Seriously. Foster is a dumba$$ for doing what he did and he's fair game as long as the hit is clean.

As a professional athlete playing a fast and violent game expected to play the game or lose your job, I expect them to play as hard and clean as they can, leaving it on the field. No one wants to see anyone get injured, but if the hit is clean and you can inflict pain on the opponent then you are doing your job in my opinion.

I think some folks are over-simplifying this by equating hitting a guy in a game of tackle football in a spot on an opponent's body that is already sore with an illegal career-ending blindside cheap shot.

Perhaps this is one of those unmentionable things that many fans of the games don't want to think about because it takes away from their sanitized perception of what the game is all about, but this type of reality is just the tip of the iceberg. This type of play and more is commonly going on right now even at Pop Warner levels of football, not just in the NFL.

If you consider leaning on a bruise of an opponent to be dirty play, then you're living in some sort of fantasy world if you don't consider almost everything about the NFL to be dirty as well.

Football is a man's sport.

For those seeking less contact and more camaraderie among competitors, I suggest a couple of hours watching shuffleboard.

Yes Foster is a complete dumb@$$! And Bruschi is one of my favorite Patriots.

HOWEVER there is a FUNDAMENTAL difference between attacking an opponents weakness during the proper course of play, like hitting him in the mouth during a fight, and cheapshotting your opponent after the play is over, ala hitting him after the bell has rang.

This is a basic principle of gamesmanship, and it applies evenly to all players and all teams. If you guys are so quick to defend Teddy because he is a Patriots legend, then do not ***** when Suh cheapshots Mankins or when every Steeler player does it!

I was upset to hear Teddy say this in an open forum, even if what he says is true. Sometimes it's more important to set a hood example than it I'd to speak your mind. And on a person level, I give no athlete credit for running their mouth, I only give them credit when they abstain from doing so!

When someone asked Jim Brown why he was always so slow to get up, he answered that he never wanted anyone to know if he was actually hurt.

The history of mankind has kinda answered this question.
