Quick thoughts:
1. I'm sure BB consulted with Jim Schwartz on this decision.
2. I'd guess that Haynesworth is too dumb to pick up new schemes ... except that BB surely disagrees.
3. Haynesworth has an expensive contract. He has to be more than a 15-down change-of-pace player, or he'll be cut.
4. 3-4 DE isn't as bad for a moody guy who doesn't want to be NT as NT is. At NT, you assume a double-team, AND your first job is to ensure the two blockers don't get away from you. At DE, if you get controlled by a double-team it wasn't a serious failure, and if you get past the double-team it was a nice success.
5. I'm sure that BB consulted with Kraft on the decision as well since we all know the how Myra didn't care for certain things and the Pats have cut people who were involved in domestic abuse issues before (Willie Andrews, Christian Peter, Kenyatta Jones, that kicker).
6. I am sure that the Pats are going to add some clauses to the contracts that will be make or break.
Just an aside, there are between 55 and 70 defensive plays a game. Haynesworth will probably play in 50% or more (if he makes it out of TC). So I'm not worried about the contract money.. Especially when you consider that the top DEs are making in the 10 million (+) range.
