Pats Trade for Haynesworth (merged)

After a particularly bad hit on Brady in the 2009 pre-season, Haynesworth went on to wax poetic about the Patriots and his love for the team, according to NESN.com:

“I'm actually a big Tom Brady fan. I'm a big Patriots fan. I've always like the Patriots, I've always liked Coach Belichick. I just like the way [Brady] is.

When you step back from football, I've always liked the Patriots. I don't know why. It's just something about them. I've always liked the Patriots."

I'm kind of thinking BB has JUMPED THE SHARK! on this one. Maybe he's CRAZY!

Big Al didn't like playing 3-4 and taking on blockers. Wilfork is also really good at being the penetrating type as is that guy from Kentucky we have....

Maybe we go more 4-3 try to penetrate the hell out of em and create some havoc...then allow an unblocked Mayo to clean things up. Maybe play some 4-2-5...

But maybe he's not crazy...maybe he's....CRAZY LIKE A FOX!

:rocker:

The more I digest this, the more I like it, low risk high reward.. he is a pass rusher, pocket collapser..

Consider Vince/Brace in the middle, Warren/Deadrick/Stroud and Haynesworth/ Wright up front.. ain't to shabby.. we got a whole lot better.

If he comes in with a bad attitude, ship his butt out of town..

Albert Haynesworth Ty Warren and Marcus Stroud at DE sure sounds a lot better then Gerard Warren and Mike Wright at DE

Bottom line is what ever problem him and Shanahan had he still made plays when he was on the field the pats give up a 5th round pick in 2013 to get a potential Seymour replacement IMO thats no risk at all

That surprises me actually! Makes me think one of two things happened. Either Stroud came in completely out of shape, or Warren came in looking great. I doubt getting Haynesworth prompted this move... it would seem silly to cut an option before seeing how Haynesworth looks. I'm leaning towards Stroud being out of shape.

My take:

- While Haynesworth didn't 2-gap in Tennessee, he is certainly capable. He was constantly double-teamed and had to control the blocks and shed them. That is not your normal 1-gap guy diving into the backfield. Slow him down just a little bit and he'll be fine. Can you think of 2 better guys for him to work with on that than Wilfork and TWarren?

- Don't forget about Marcus Stroud being added (Edit: go ahead and forget about Stroud) and Ty Warren returning. At 6'5", Warren is the midget in that group. Having a tall 3-4 DE is ideal and these guys are massive with long arms. Youngsters like Brace and Deaderick are going to have to step up their games big time to stay on the roster.

- At his best, Haynesworth is an every down player. He can slide inside on passing downs and provide an inside pass rush not seen since Seymour was traded. Pryor and Wright seemed to be settling into the sub DT roles and they had to feel pretty secure after the draft. Not so much anymore so they will need to play with some urgency to avoid losing snaps (or a roster spot).

- His 2009 year in Washington wasn't bad at all, but the team was horrible. Add in the deteriorating relationship with Shannahan and he just shut down in 2010. No excuses but his current situation is as close to night-n-day as you can imagine.

- Haynesworth is 30, in a contract year and realizing that his career trajectory has bent decidedly in a southerly direction. All of the environmental and personal barriers in Washington have been removed so failure in NE will hurt him immensely. Dillon responded with 1600 yds and 12 TDs. Moss responded with 1500 yds and 23 TDs. I don't believe motivation will be an issue. If Haynesworth is in shape, he should not only have solid production but could have a domino effect (kind of a reverse 2002 Steve Martin) that raises the level of the rest of the defense.

Bottom line...Absolutely worth the risk.

lets not forget about Brandon Deaderick the kid looked pretty good last year

DarrylS, bad attitude is all this guy's got. It has got to be changed, but I feel the risk is worth it with Coach Pepper Johnson working miracles.

He's accused of sexually harassing a black waitress and his defense is, I don't like black girls. Classy.

Metaphors, great analysis, but you underestimate what a freakin' disaster this guy was in DC. I mean he directly violated the head coach's rule against hazing rookies. When he hadn't even played a down for the team. And he did it flagrantly.

He's signed through 2013, so he's not in a contract year.

Seems like a good gamble to me. All this crap reminds me of Dillon/Moss trades. All of them head cases with bad reps that just need BB's reality slap to the side of the head. Maybe 2-3 good years before the ego explodes again. Or 4 weeks and cut.

To bad about Shroud! Was there one to many visits to the cookie jar?

BB: Albert what is best in life?
AH: To crush the Jets, terrorize their QB, and to hear the lamentation of their women!
BB: That is good! *mad genius laughter* That is good!

Bonus points to anyone who can identify the movie. But I can SO picture this conversation happening pre-game between BB and AH just before kickoff vs the Jets. ^_^

Best line that Ahhnold Swartzenegger ever had. (Which weren't that many!)

The alleged reason for the cut is that Stroud's shoulder hasn't healed enough.

Pardon me if my comments are redundant, but I wasn't reading 19 pages this morning.

3, This reminds me a bit of the time when BB grabbed another high first round pick, Jonathan Sullivan off the scrap heap. Unfortunately Sullivan was still a turd and didn't make it until September. Low risk high reward.

2nd time I have seen this compared to Sullivan. The difference being that Sullivan never did anything, anywhere. AH has dominated in the past. Big difference.

Good move for you guys, low risk high reward. Hope he's stayed in shape over the lockout.

Him and Wilfork next to each other will be tough.

Wasn't clear. It is an effective contract year since I believe that his contract has a massive salary bump or bonus due soon. I'm actually not sure if it is 2012 but it seems likely that if Haynesworth wants to remain a Patriot, it will take a contract renegotiation.

Edit: Just saw he is due under $8M in salary next year (no bonus) so the big jump must be 2013. So I guess it is possible for the Pats to let him play under his contract next year. $7M+ is still a huge chunk of change so he would need to be a stud to justify it.

dont like the move at all. He is a lazy pain in the ass and cost waaaaaay too much. On a positive note, teams are NOT running up the middle on us.

My understanding was that Haynesworth hated playing NT in the 3-4. Maybe he won't mind playing DE, or maybe I'm just grasping at straws hoping that he's worth a $5M cap hit when openly and borderline-aggressively quitting on Shanahan indicates otherwise.

Either way, gotta admit that having a guy with his talent on this D could be huge if it all works out. It's definitely a classic case of buying low, and if the guy has any pride at all, he's going to be pissed off at how far his value has fallen. Unfortunately, I'm not sure that he does.
