OT: Singletary Fired

No surprise at all. Singletary seemed to be one of those guys that was a great player, maybe a very good position coach, but that was his ceiling. Just seemed like expecting him to be a successful HC was asking for more than he could deliver.

No QB has ever been as ruined by coach/coordinator switches as Alex Smith. He'd be a pro bowl QB right now if he could have had an extra 2 or 3 years with Norv.

Coughlin would be going from the frying pan to the fire... Both guys are dinosaurs who really don't know how to get players to buy in. The 2007 Giants won almost in spite of Generalissimo Coughlin and their dislike for him. Strahan somehow pulled that team together behind Eli and got them all to believe in themselves and their young DC and saved Tom's job for another couple of seasons. Tom couldn't even keep it rolling after that.

Not that a meddling owner didn't help but Fisher is about as overhyped as they come. Ditto Fox. As was Shannahan. Chuckie is a loose cannon who got lucky in inheriting a team Dungy had built and defensively poised on the cusp. None of them can develop QB's which is crucial to success at this level. Cowher is probably the pick of the retread litter if he truly wants back into the fray.

Pretty amazing that in a QB starved league one defensive genius has developed two of the 12 still standing...and atop their divisions to boot...

I don't know much about coaches, but I'd never choose Coughlin. I hate his sideline demeanor; I think his whiny, blaming body language after every bad play creates a bad vibe for the team. What, did he see something before the play started he thinks his players missed? Instead of beaming in disapproving glances, get your guys focused on dealing with the situation the bad play created.

For all his talk about discipline, the Giants hurt themselves in pressure situations with ill-timed false starts, and, even worse in my opinion, way too many delay-of-game penalties. They can't get the frickin' play in and execute quickly enough??

The fact is that the NFL is woefully short on two major positions, quality QBs, which is well known and Head Coaches. There are several semi-functional HCs with major flaws but complete packages, guys who can coach football and handle players like Sean Peyton, BB and former HC Dungy are uncommon. Looking at the bottom half of the league I cannot believe that owners pay these clowns several million dollars per year to mismanage their teams.

13-3 Cowboys (#1 Seed)
13-3 Packers (#2 Seed)
16-0 Patriots (Greatest team of all-time)

...without fantastic coaching. All three of those teams were vastly superior to the Giants and had more talent yet they beat them all. When a team with LESS talent beats three teams with superior talent, it's the coaching.

A team winning "in spite" of the coach happens when a talented team wins despite having a bad coach, eg: Chargers, Cowboys. A coach deserves all the credit in the world when he leads an inferior team to victory, especially in the fashion he did.

His 2007 run was the most impressive post-season run of all-time, period. Why? Because he topped it off with out coaching and defeating Bill Belichick in the biggest game of his career. It kills me, but he deserves his credit.

Guy also had the Jaguars in the AFC Championship game, one year after expansion, included with his 4 straight playoff seasons with them.

Coughlin is easily a better coach than "sexy names" such as Jeff Fisher and John Gruden.

All that being said though, Giants need a change as this is a collapse. Just like the Broncos and Bucs needed to get rid of Gruden and Shanny when they collapsed.

Yesterday, during the game, Troy Smith was jawing with Singletary.




Getting in shouting matches with your players like that means they don't respect you as a coach, which means they think he's a terrible coach.
He should have stayed a linebacker coach.

Troy Smith isn't exactly the epitome of excellent player..

That being said, you're right about the players not respecting Singletary.

No surprise here, but I still don't know why they did this with one game left. If they're already out of it, what does it matter who coaches the last game? Why not just wait until "pink slip Monday" after the last game? The only thing I can think of is they REALLY REALLY wanted him gone like yesterday.

I just want to add that the Bengals might have found what their problems were on offense. All year long, TOcho were not reading the same playbook as Palmer. They made Palmer look terrible. The two of them go out and look the Bengals are playing like who we thought they were. I would not be surprise if they beat the Ravens with the Ravens playing for the division.

If so once again we see that HCs need to get rid of diva wideouts that refuse to stay in sync with capable QBs. Wonder what BB would do in that situation?

Wow, kudos to Ted Ginn for trying to stop Smith from undermining the HC. Too bad about Singletary. He was a great player and a bad HC. I think he is a good motivator and bad Xs and Os guy. You have to have the whole package to be a HC.

I can't remember who said it but great players often make poor coaches.
