Schefter on Vernon Gholston's contract

But, if you're the Jets, why would you rush to bring him back, or even bring him back at all, under those circumstances? It's one thing to keep him around to save face. It's another to bring him back if you've already cut him.

I expect either way he will be out of the NFL next year and be joining the Ironman circuit. Look for him at 3 am on ESPN2 for the boulder throwing competitions.

heh...heh...

The Jets have two more division games left...now that this is out, I think that the possibility that someone will pull a Favre or fumble to him in a game that is "over" is delightful...

taking Nine Big Ones out of Woody Johnson's pocket...that's gotta be worth it...and since the precedent is that the League let Strahan's record stand and also did nothing to Favre when he went in the tank for Strahan, there's nothing they can do! This I have to see!

He had all of the physical tools so he must have nothing but Cheese Whiz between the ears. I'm still amazed he was regarded up there with Mayo.

What!? "Regarded up there with Mayo"? Mayo was projected late first to a 3rd round pick and was considered a BIG STRETCH where he was picked.

Gholston was a sure fire, can't miss, top 10 draft pick!

As always reality set in some time after the draft but pre-draft you wouldn't mention these guys names in the same sentence.

fwiw when the pats were on the clock, mayock said mayo before the pick was made

LOL. I sort of hope an opposing QB down the stretch pulls a Favre w/ Strahan and lets him get his sack.

shouldnt it be the other way round ? if he doesnt get a sack then he still stays with the jets occupying a roster spot possibly ?

I am so praying for Gholston to get at least one sack. That might be the most expensive sack in history.

They probably wouldn't. Worst case scenario is they cut him and bring him back. They don't have to pay 9M under any circumstances was his point.

Are you kidding? An 9.1M roster bonus? There's no way they pick up that option if Gholston makes the sack. He has been a VAST bust of epic proportions. The sad thing is that the Jets traded UP to get him. Looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane is an apt descriptor for Vernon Gholston.

This guy must flat-out not care. Sure he was a pre-combine workout wonder, but on the freakin' field he broke Vrabel's Big 10 record for sacks in a season and most came against Big 10 Big Boys like Wisconsin and Michigan.

NFL tackles and College tackles are a completely different thing. There's a reason some guys do poorly in college and great in the NFL, and some guys do the opposite.

Gholston is big, strong, and fast, but has terrible technique. He's never needed to have good technique. He doesn't seem to be able to pick it up either.

That doesn't mean hes dumb, lazy, or whatever (although he may be). It just means he can't master the technical aspects of being an elite NFL pass rusher.

I saw that on the JI board and thought they were just being funny ... well Vern only has a few weeks left.

No they didn't. Lose 12 games in a season and the NFL awards you with a very early draft pick.

Are they even going to play Gholston? I mean, honestly, is any one sack worth $9 million? Because that's what we're talking about here.
Actually 1 sack guarantees free agency, not $9mill, because the Jets would never pay the option bonus

100% wrong on Mayo.
