Deion Branch: Patriots vs. Seahawks stats comparison

If he was the same player he was a couple years back he'd be worth a 1st round pick.
He was never worth a first round pick or even a second. His draft spot was the last pick of round 2 and BB could have traded down a round and still picked him up.

You can find 64 players in any given draft that are better than Branch?

Note:
-Branch played with Brady for 100% of the games he was in for the Patriots.
-Branch played with Hasselbeck for 80% of the games he was in, with the other 20% being with Seattle backup QBs.

Also, an astute Patsfans.com message board poster notes, "Branch played with Brady for 100 percent of the games he was in for the Patriots. Branch played with Hasselbeck for 80 percent of the games he was in, with the other 20 percent being with Seattle backup QBs."

Another good article explaining his use or rather misuse in Seattle from Hasselbeck's perspective.

“(Brady) would say, ‘Wow, I watch you guys on offense and, you’re not really using him like we used him,’ ” Hasselbeck told the Herald this week. “But we had to do it that way, by default. Deion was talented enough to play inside, play outside, and we had other guys who could only play inside, so we moved Deion (to the outside).”

“If anybody knows how to use him, it’s the Patriots,” Hasselbeck said. “If anybody knows how to throw him the ball, it’s Tom Brady. I expect that he has a good year this year.”

Branch has battled injuries, including a torn ACL, and his production waned. Yet Hasselbeck raved about his health after an impressive camp.

“He’s probably the same guy when (the Patriots) last had him,” said Hasselbeck, the former Xaverian and Boston College star. “He looks great. He’s very quick, he’s very explosive. I don’t know about just a track race, but he’s very quick. And if guys try to get physical with him, he’s strong enough.”

“And if the quarterback believes in you,” he continued, “that’s huge.”

In earning Super Bowl MVP honors and stardom before being traded to sign a big contract with the Seahawks, Branch excelled by playing every position. Sometimes, Brady would simply move him around in the huddle to find the right matchup, and the option routes featured two minds thinking like one.

It wasn’t like that in Seattle. In the rigid West Coast offense, Branch was pegged as the deep threat and outside receiver. His assignment was rarely adjusted or ad-libbed. For a receiver Hasselbeck described as “more quick than fast,” it didn’t best utilize his talents.

Matt Hasselbeck predicts big things for Branch - BostonHerald.com

Deion Branch Best Seasons
2005: 78 receptions / 998 yards / 5 TDs
2003: 57 receptions / 803 yards / 3 TDs
2006: 53 receptions / 725 yards / 4 TDs

2010 with 5 games remaining
46 receptions / 545 yards / 4 TDs

Branch is on pace to have his best season since 2005, his last year with the Patriots. This season is also on pace to be his second best statistical year in the NFL.

Congrats, your commentary was picked up by the Globe's Eric Wilbur.
Congrats indeed! And thanks for the stats Disco Volante. The more Im here on this site, the more I learn about the game of football.

Very cool! Thanks guys.

Let us gather here once again to mourn the tragic loss of that 4th round pick.

I have to admit I definitely wasn't on the bandwagon to get Branch back, but I am eating some serious crow right now, especially after today's game!! I am loving having him back, and he seems extremely happy to be here!

Twiggy never should have left, and I think he realizes that now. This is the perfect fit for him. He's been great since he came back.

See, the problem is, you don't actually know that. Just because Mel Kiper or whoever the hell did the predraft ratings at the time said Branch should have gone X doesn't mean he would have. For all we know the team after the Patriots might have taken him. Or the team after them.

All I know is I am so happy he was on the field today. He was just electrifying.

I would of loved to ask you why back then. The guy is still a #1-#2 WR (even with Seattle). How could you not want that on your team?

Thinking they overpaid (they did) wasn't the same as saying that Branch wasn't wanted, as some of us were busy pointing out back then.

An impact WR for the next 2-3 years isn't worth a 4th round pick? Why do you think they overpaid?

I knew Branch had something left in the tank at Seattle. Earlier in the season, he looked as quick as I had seen him since 2005. I'm glad to have been proven right in this regard. He's been solid since coming back here (when healthy, of course).

Because it has to do with the player value at the time of the trade.

Because he doesn't want to admit he was wrong.

Nonsense. Go back and look at what I posted when it was going down. I had no problem with the team bringing Branch in. My only issue was paying a 4th, rather than something less, because it was overpaying for a guy who was pretty clearly on the way out the door in Seattle. It wasn't a case where I went off on the deal. You could look to the Burgess trade for comparison.

That is simply moronic

That is simply moronic

I HATE having to defend Deus... but here it goes.

It's not moronic. Value of a player is judged at the time he's traded, not after the fact.

That said, I feel like Irae's assessment of Branch was wrong at the time. Branch had a higher value to the Pats than anyone else, especially a Pats team that just dealt Moss. He should've been a 5th rounder-- but it was the Pats (who just ejected Moss) so the deal was the 4th. They didn't overpay because they wouldn't have gotten him at the time they needed him for less. After the season? Yeah sure. But in-season at that time? It had to be the 4th.

But the comment wasn't moronic. He's made a legitimate argument and his posts at the time said pretty much was he's saying. No issue.
