How to improve game-day threads?

I think this is a subject worth discussing because I've noticed how sour the atmosphere in the game-day threads can turn when a few posters start jumping off virtual cliffs.

The problem with that is those cliffs are virtual, and unfortunately not real- so those posters jumping off cliffs keep coming back to jump off some more, and their negative attitude becomes the proverbial rotten apple in the barrel.

I think that there has got to be a way that those game-day threads are moderated better and more closely. There has got to be a way, some kind of uniform criteria that can be applied to screen out posters who ruin the experience for everyone else.
Unfortunately I solved this problem a long time ago. I dont read them.

Sadly, I don't think it's possible to stop the bipolar, knee jerk reactions to team play during game day. Every Sunday this board turns into a bunch of unstable and overemotional teen girls.

Pretty much.

Who in the world takes a game day thread seriously? It's for fun. The real problem is the deluge of chicken little threads the entire week following a loss (and frequently, a win).

If only the chicken littles were trolls with a sense of humor. Wistfol sigh.

Only allow snarky ad hominem comments to be posted in iambic pentameter.
At least the pig would be sporting a decent shade of lipstick:

Of Moss’ first disobedience, and the fruit
Of that forbidden tree whose mortal taste
Brought death into the World, and all our woe.

What he said?

You're mistaken if you think that's in iambic pentameter.

Some of us still remember our Shakespeare.

How to improve the how to improve game-day threads thread.

1) Don't presume to tell Milton what blank verse is.

It’s all in how you say it … Not sure if the Curran thing was a dig but I’m not him. I have more hair and a better show (I win by default for not having one).

More people need to join the chat room during the game. It gets pretty hilarious and is a great way to vent without starting a bunch of opinion threads.

Same here, pretty much. I just stopped participating in gameday threads, because they make my game-watching experience significantly worse. Sucks, too, because I also miss the insightful and interesting comments that are occasionally made.

As a possible solution, I'm sure there are a lot of folks who would volunteer to mod gameday threads. I know I'd certainly be willing to, at least for games where I don't have plans that require me to be away from the computer.

You showed up around the time Prentice McCray disappeared.

That's a great idea - if we can figure out a way to get people to go there rather than in the game day thread (or start new, unnecessary threads.)

I recall there being a problem with the chat room on game days a year or two ago but it sounds like it's working well know. If that's the case then there's not much need to continue the game day thread in its present format.

Perhaps the game day thread should be more detailed analysis, while the one line reactions could be asked to move to the chat room?

I'm usually out watching the game and even when I'm home I'm most likely not on the computer till after the game. So personally I'm not bothered by the game day thread because I so seldom see it - but obviously it is an issue for many others. My beef is more with the fifty new knee-jerk reaction threads with little substance that pop up right after a game ends, but that's another topic for another day.

Winston has had some stellar posts that I don't think Curran could ever dream of mustering up.

Patjew sees the game
Has no idea what's happened
We win, yay; lose, crap.

I'm sure no one wants to here from me, seeing as I was one of the posters called out in the thread that was deleted...but after the fact it was.definitely apparent to me that blurting (or typing) out emotional thoughts does drag some people down, and that is never my intent. I personally, am going to make a serious effort to hold back on derogatory rants aimed at pats plays that I am displeased with going forward.

Anyway, the point of all this rambling is that 1) as one of the more egregious offenders from last week, I'm going to hold my tongue, or fingers, as best I can. Afterall, the gamethreads are enjoyable, especially for those of us that live out of the area and far away from other pats fans.

You were exactly the person that first sprang to mind when I saw this thread. I can appreciate, based on what you've posted, that you're a genuine fan and not a troll, but have trouble moderating your emotions during games. So I take back what I said about you when I read those game day thread comments.

What you've said about those of us who encounter those kinds of posts is very true - I can't seem to find any Pats fans wanting to watch them play the Browns on a tiny internet screen between 1 and 4 AM here for some reason. So I come to the Game Day threads to have some fellow Pats fans to commune with, which almost makes me seem like less of a loser than being alone at an absurd hour in the morning on the other side of the world staring at a tiny box on a computer screen. Almost.

I appreciate your efforts to modulate your hyperbole and negativity during game day threads. Good luck, and we'll make sure to assist if you start going over the top. I'll do my part by subtly posting "It's medication time!" when you do it so you know you've gone overboard again. In the meantime, no sharp objects m'kay?

That would be a reasonable approach. Let the people who ruined game day chat have it. Sadly when chat wasn't functioning as smoothly they migrated to the thread that was started for those who had fled chat because they wanted to continue to discuss the game rationally (and those looking for a rational and more detailed way to follow along when they were unable to access the game live) and ruined it too. It became as unmanageable as chat because of the rush to post reactionary blather as if it were chat. Fried a couple of servers site supporters stepped up to help Ian pay for in the process. Let them have their venting zone and let the rest of us have somewhere civilized to gather and discuss or follow the game as it unfolds. If you look back to when pats1 started the game threads they were clearly not geared for venting but rather as an alternative. He and others were at times early on doing detailed play by play commentary...and answering out of towners questions about what had happened and why to help them fill in the blanks that attempting to follow the game on gamecenter graphic creates.

And BTW Ian created a format for limiting the chaos here post game only the mods don't seem inclined to implement it. Ian himself steps in periodically to underscore the fact that post game consolidation isn't a subversion of free speech, just a way to corral it so it doesn't overwhelm the board with negativity and vitriol. Of course he also endorsed merging redundant threads and created the practice squad forum and NFL forum for much of the irrational and OT posting - both of which are totally underutilized by his mods...

All the more reason to make the atmosphere of the thread a little more friendlier and more open.

I was just thinking that the general rule in there is no calling out posters or attacking them, and to that I suggest we add no attacking or bashing players, coaches, or any part of the Patriots organization because that seems to incite just as much venom as a personal attack on a poster.

And I don't mean that there should be no emotion when there is a dropped pass, but when a player drops a pass, I don't think there is a need to post "cut the ****** idiot!!"

The chat room is fine how it is, guys. Let's not go **** that up too now.
