Why did we ever get rid of the old uniforms?

I realize this is not a poll, but I hate the old unis--too many bad memories, besides they make our players look smaller.

I was thinking the opposite - I can't remember Wilfork ever looking bigger than he did yesterday. But then, maybe he is bigger than ever.

Being a Pat's fan since 1975, I do love the old uni's. It seems like everything I buy lately, as far as Pat's stuff, is usually of the throwback variety. Was just up in Boston, swore I wasn't gonna buy anything, and wound up getting a throwback long sleeve shirt for $35 and a Mitchell & Ness throwback hat. Already have a throwback Tom Brady Jersey, and a 1976 throwback Russ Francis jersey. I really do love that throwback style.

BUT, the new style is the style that we won with, so I prefer it. I do like that they wear the throwbacks once in a while.

The old uniform represents failure on every level... winning, coaching, drafting, ownership, legacy, etc. They had to go.

I know it's a personal opinion, but I HATE the old unis.

That's not true at all. I don't know how old you are NYPatsFan, but there were several really good Pat's teams as well as Pat's draft choices that wore that uni. The drafts from 1974-1977 were excellent, and so were some of the teams during that era. The carryover from that draft were still key players when the Pats made the Super Bowl in 1985 (Steve Grogan, Steve Nelson, Stanley Morgan, John Hannah). The real bad times came in the late 80's and early 90's. I will agree, that all of our winning came when they changed the uniforms and started a winning culture during the Bledsoe/Parcells era, but they did have some success and great draft choices during the Pat Patriot era as well.

I am a huge fan of them, but I also like the 00-present too. I am afraid of what Nike is going to do starting in 2012.

I may be showing my age, but I cannot envision players like John Hannah, Steve Nelson or Stanley Morgan wearing the blue Flying Elvis uniforms that the current team wears. I generally prefer the Pat Patriot red and white uniforms. However, would not all agree that both Steve Grogan and Tom Brady would look excellent in both uniforms leading the team to a late game victory?

Pat Patriot/Flying Elvis

interesting that this summer, on july, there was on Patriots Com a 'debate' pool between Pat Patriot and Flying Elvis

and Pat Patriot won clearly

anyway we are 6-1 and this is the first important matter

I don't understand. Does Nike have something to do with the uniforms that teams wear?

For all of you too young to remember the "old" Patriots and their uniforms, please quit referring them to a losing, failure, poor coaching, etc. They were not as successful as the 2001+ Patriots, but...who has been? Steelers are close, that is it.

The Pats were not always good, sometimes there were terrible, but they had some good teams and some very good teams. Except for my namesakes call in Oakland, the Pats would have probably already won a SB since they were playing the best football in the league at that time.

Hannah, Grogan, Cunningham, Nelson, Haynes, etc......they all were stars in the old unis. (let me edit in Nance, Parrilli too)

So to sum it up, if you havn't watched them from previous years, refrain from trashing what you don't know about....they weren't anywhere near as bad a franchise as some of you make them out to be.

As to the uniforms.....I would love to see the old uniforms with a blue jersey instead of the red ones....the red never made sense to me for reasons other have already stated.

I get extra pumped whenever they are wearing the old unis..I don't think of past failures at all. 3-4 times a year would be great.

I like the throwbacks but the newer uniforms look better in my opinion. I also don't think they are too much like any other uniform.

Seriously. I know not everyone likes them, but they're so sharp and good looking. Now the new logo and colors just make us blend in with most of the other teams. Before it was unique, all football fans knew who the Patriots were before just by the colors/logo. Now though, if you're not close up you could mistake us for the Titans or Chargers or Panthers or Seahawks, etc.

I'd love it if we could go back to the old logo and uniform. It was like a blast from the past watching us play today.

If I recall my history correctly, Paul Revere didn't ride from town to town shouting, "The bluecoats are coming!" ;)

Its a throwback. Part of being a winning team is knowing not to live in the past (blank walls anyone?) Besides, no self respecting Patriot wore redcoat colors anyway ;)

It's ok for throwback days but it honestly makes me nervous watching them in the red and white. Too many losses associated with that color scheme.

They've grown on me.

The blue ones are the best looking unis of the NFL. People who prefer the old red ones must be the people who watched the team during those years :p I don't blame you, in 20 years when the pats have new unis I will probably be the first one saying blah the old blue ones from the 00's were way better!

I like the old uni's. But, I'd like the NEW minuteman (helmet) of new, rather than, the minuteman-of-old...

I was a Patriots fan starting in 1986, when I was very little, in NYC !

A few thoughts:

1) I don't know how accurate it is, but I read once that the real reason the logo was switched was the league asked for it because the Pat Patriot logo was difficult to reproduce on a mass level and vendors were complaining about manufacturing costs. With the amount of throwback merchandise available now, it's possible they've found ways to make it easier to reproduce.

2) If I could change one thing about our current unis, it would be to put a stripe on the helmet like the old white ones had. IMHO a helmet just doesn't look right without a stripe down the middle. But that's just me.

3) For the record, we started wearing the current unis in 2000, not 2001.

4) I don't care what ANYONE says, my favorite uni design was the one we wore in the mid-late '90s. Looking at it objectively, however, it's possible I feel this way just because it reminds me of my college daze.

5) Some of you mentioned you don't like the old unis because it reminds you of the team's lean years. That's why for the life of me I will never understand why the Jets wear those God-awful Titans throwbacks a couple times a year. Their franchise absolutely sucked the three years they were the Titans, why the hle would you want to be reminded of that period? At least the Pats can say they had some very good years in their red unis.

6) I can see why some of you say the current unis look like a lot of other teams' unis. When the new look was unveiled, my first thought was they looked like we were trying to imitate Tennessee (at least with the jerseys.) But remember that in the 1970s, EVERY team in the AFC East had a white helmet too. ;)
