Not sure this has been noted elsewhere. but BB really knows how to wheel and deal.

A commenter on patriots.com has a great perspective on the Branch trade:

On the news of Deion Branch returning to New England I realized something.
The Patriots drafted Deion Branch in the second round.
He helped them win two superbowls and became one’s MVP.
They traded Branch for a 1st round pick giving them two.
That 1st round pick turned into Brandon Merriweather (Pro Bowl Saftey)
The second 1st round pick was traded to the 49ers for a 1st and 4th round picks the next year.
That first rounder became Jerod Mayo (Defensive rookie of the year)
That 4th round pick then turned into Randy Moss when they traded with the Raiders.
Randy got them to a superbowl and helped break huge records including going 16 - 0.
They trade Moss for a 3rd round pick getting back more value. (received for 4th traded for 3rd)
They trade Maroney for a 4th round pick which they then used to pick up Deion Branch.
Which is basically like trading Maroney (a bust) for Deion Branch.
So basically..
They turned Deion Branch into Moss, Merriweather and Mayo.
And now they have Branch back PLUS a new 3rd round pick.
That’s just mind boggling lol. They actually gained and lost nothing from all of this.
Now the Patriots have young talented receivers a young learning defense and Branch to teach them.
Thats just insane. They got so much for Branch and now they have him again LOL."

For all this talk about Branch being back and everything people failed to mention he had major knee surgery.Thats what is very risky about this deal.

Wow that's an awesome recap. I'm sure it must've also led to what 4 straight Super Bowls, right?

They did not, they used the pick on Meriweather, end of story.

If you want to connect the dots here's another way of looking at it, gaining a first from the original Branch trade has now been nullified by trading their 2006 1st (Maroney) to Denver for a 4th, which in turn was flipped for Branch.

If you follow it correctly it resulted in two super bowl wins and a third super bowl appearance. If you’re going to be sarcastic make sure you are correct.

Technically the 2006 first became 3 years of starter-caliber RB play plus a 2010 fourth. The contributions that you're given on the field does matter when you're determining the utility of a pick.

Re: BB gets more out of Deion Branch than perhaps any player in the histroy of the NF

I think the "locker room leader" crap is overplayed

I hope I am wrong and Branch has a positive effect on the young ones:)

Our 4th for Branch ='s no big deal

I don't expect the pats to win it all..... I expect them to contend.

Randy Moss is gone and I am very pleased...... perhaps Deion can have a good relationship with our young guns.... I'm not a believer in locker room ****..... Randy is gone and a new chapter has begun w/ his departure.:)

Ok than, the 2006 1st becomes 3 years of a starting quality RB (that's a good one) for Branch and his declining health and production. Better?

It seems like you 2 are at odds...... I haven read wjat is going on..

Calciumee you seem like you covet draft picks....... but all things considered Our 4th for The Twig..... is nothing. It is not a deep draft and we are absolutely loaded in premeir picks.

we can't sign them all..... we have that many.:):):)

edit- before you homers argue and say something stupid like "Aaron Hernandez was drafted in the 4th" Yeah he was a 4th rounder that fell way to deep b/c of drug concerns. I loved the kid as a Gator and he is so much better now. Hernandez was an obvious 1st rounder prior to the allegations. :)

I don't know. He got 3 Super Bowls and a 16-0/18-1 season out of a 6th round draft pick.

That seems like a better return.

For the sake of this argument what matters is that he was availiable in the fourth, the reason he was there does not matter. He was still a 4th rounder.

I agree.......Tom Brady trumps all.

Re: BB gets more out of Deion Branch than perhaps any player in the histroy of the NF

Bill drafted Deion for a late 2nd rounder. He got 4 years and 2 rings out of him before trading him for a 1st he later traded back for a 4th and a 1st that became Jerod Mayo and Randy Moss whom he just traded for a third after getting three seasons including an undefeated regular season out of after trading former late 1st rounder Maroney for 4 years of at least solid production and a 4th rounder he has now traded to reacquire Deion Branch... Gets more out of is relative...

Again, The pick acquired for Branch was used on Meriweather, end of story.
It is debatable to call Maroney's Patriot career "solid production" but in any case it would be 3 years not 4. I wouldn't call 93 yards on 28 carries a solid year of production and I know it is because he was injured.

We have tooo many picks to sign this year. Expect our lord BB to trade at least 4 away for future selections. Or he could trade down with our chips:eek:
