Don't kill me for this, but what about Edelman as a third down back? Can he block? Faulk isn't big, and he protects Brady well. Edelman has a great burst and acceleration, plus he take off on a deep route. Thoughts?

Can't see the Ravens trading McGahee either. He's carved out a nice little role as their short yardage back. Plus we're a conference rival. But you're right he fits the bill.

Larry Johnson is the kind of back, that could flourish with a good team in a good environment I have always liked him as a solid RB. Dont know what, actually, happened to him.

750 carries in 2 years happened. Herm ran the poor kid into the ground.

I actually think this is Sammy Morris' moment to shine. While there's only one Kevin Faulk, I think Morris can do a more than serviceable job in that role, at least until Woodhead knows his blitz pickup assignments. Let's beat Buffalo, surprise Miami, be alone atop the division at 3-1 at the bye, and take it from there. We'll be fine.

Morris can't catch a cold

I can't see the Ravens dealing him to the Patriots, not until after we play them. I enjoy Lynch's bruising back style and he looks like a mean MOFO.

You just knew the moment we traded Maroney something like this would happen. 3rd down is going to be a pain in the arse now.

There's no doubt we will see more of Edelman or Woodhead in the backfield. Taylor is a good blocker, but there's no way we can replace the combination of Faulk's receiving and blocking skills combined with anyone on the roster. The coaches and Brady are just going to have to play around it.

We should have had a better player than Green-Ellis on the squad before releasing Maroney. If maroney played for another team, we would be considering acquiring for a 4th rounder.

Outlet receiver yes, pass blocker no. Faulk has caught a lot of his passess flexed out in an empty backfield set.

The reality is that we we have 5 lineman, 1 quarterback and a 1 running back on the field at almost all times. Unless Edelman is the running back, he is one of options to have on the field as a receiver. Since one of the tight ends will also be on the field almost always, Edelman will compete with Tate for reps at WR, not with the running back.

Many times we have had Faulk on the field as that RB, but a WR would be a better substitute for him than a RB.
I'm not saying play Edelman in the backfield, I'm saying play him the important role Faulk played as a primary pass reciever with no blocking duties, even split out.

Yes for that part of Faulks role, but Faulk was part WR part RB

How about this... We aquire Brandon Jacobs through a trade and split carries with BJGE and use Taylor in Faulks role? Eh? Sammie Morris as FB. This way Fred Taylor isn't getting all the carries and getting banged up... Nicely split up between our RB's. I would also expect them to give Woodhead reps.

Woodhead is the only guy like Faulk - can run, good hands, jitterbug and can possibly block due to his stout lower body. Remember that Woodhead has been in the NFL 2 years already - this is his third year - so maybe the light is coming on.

Woodhead did a good job on third down last year protecting Sancheese after Leon Washington went down. I think that you will be pleasantly surprised. Plus, in addition to giving 110% all the time, the guy has speed to burn...

I'd certainly like to see what Woodhead can do, but to me the obvious replacement for Faulk at 3rd down back is actually Fred Taylor. He is smart, has shown he can pass block, was a quite decent receiver historically for Jacksonville, and is faster, bigger, and just as elusive as Faulk. He doesn't seem to be up to being a lead back anymore, so playing the 3rd down back might actually maximize his contribution across a game. That would leave BJGE or Morris as the "lead" back.

This is a very good post. Woodhead CAN block, the Jets were very impressed with his blocking ability. He can catch, he can run, and he can block. He's not a pile mover, but as a third down back, I wouldn't be worried about that.

He isnt picking up a blitz when he is split out in the slot.
