Is Breer Leaving the Globe?

from BSM.................
After a stint of just under a year at the Boston Globe, Albert Breer is taking his talents to the NFL Network. The Globe’s National NFL writer will be covering the East coast for the Network in a writing, reporting and on-air role. According to Chad Finn today, Breer will be leaving after the Patriots play the Porps, er, the Dolphins on October 4th

Looks like everybody here who said Breer's tour of NFL training camps made it look like he was positioning himself for a national job and not interested in the local beat were dead on.

maybe someone should tweet and ask him

I still think Breer

Reminds me of the kid from Boys From BRazil ...

Not sure why there is some anti-Breer sentiments in this thread.

The guy has been without a doubt one of the more insightful football guys from the moment he stepped on the scene.

If you couldn't tell that this guy has had his sights set on the national stage, then you haven't been paying attention. He isn't even the Pats beat writer at the globe, he is their general NFL guy.

Good for him - I'm sure he'll do a good job at the NFL Network.

I really didn't mind Breer. He started out analyzing what was happening on the field, something I found informative and educational. For a while last season, he had a second extensive notes column on Wednesdays. This was a promising attempt to expand the Globe's coverage of the NFL. Too bad that fell by the wayside.

For sure, his writing skills and grammar could be improved. And maybe he did get caught up in the need to establish himself as independent by being overly critical at times.

For me, the bottom line was that he was willing to try new things and made an honest effort to bring some serious football coverage (including 31 other teams) to the Globe. I think his ambitions in this respect will be missed. Not sure who's next, but I'm not aware of anyone that has the potential to do what Breer was trying to accomplish.

Good luck to Mr. Breer.

My thinking. And when it comes to watching tape, he's pretty far ahead of most football writers around here.

What he is, like Reiss, is somebody who grew up professionally in the modern era, and advanced without being an excellent writer. Think what you want about Borges -- and I share the general extremely negative view of him -- but he can flat-out write, and so can all the other writers of that age range who for the most part we all hate. The younger ones? Not necessarily.

Fair analysis.

The art and craft of writing becomes less and less important amongst sports media these days. When you're a beat guy, its not a real issue.

sadly he moved away from that craft of game tape and bought into the hype machines. if was a national writer then why did constantly berate the pats for not taking dez bryant and applaud the cowboys for it. other teams passed on him too...
and his aaron hernandez columns just went for about 4 months. his knowledge of the game maybe quite good but he had other aspirations muddle what he could be-more informational about football.

I think this was what I expected to see from Breer (the film analysis) but never got enough of.

Yeah, in hindsight, it's a no brainer he was eyeing a national prize. But I'm disappointed that it was so transparent while in the works. Also, Globe people should be smart enough to know that the NFL, as a league in whole, is well covered by other media; what they can give to us, their audience, is a good focus on the Patriots, like Reiss did and does. Throw in Breer's penchant for the out-of-the-blue snarky comment and I was definitely disappointed.

As for writing ability: Reiss is actually a very good writer. Not in the Montville/Ryan mold, but in a very precise and efficient way. Read his chats and you'll see that gift on display.

Too bad he doesn't write well.

Punchline of the Day candidate.

I stopped reading the Glob's Pats page during TC, and started reading FESPNBoston for Reiss & Bruschi. Btwn Breer's puff-pieces on the fat obnoxious loudmouth Sparano and the fat stupid loudmouth Wrecks, and SMY's puff-pieces on AFailus, neither offered anything that I couldn't read elsewhere.

The only thing at the Glob worth reading is its Ruins coverage with Fluto & KPD. Its baseball, basketball & football coverage is useless.

Very, very well said. For all that Borges drives me crazy with his actual opinions, at his best he crafts a story brilliantly. Breer and Reiss, for all of their respective strengths, wouldn't know a gripping opening if it...err...gripped them?

Breer does know his football, though.

Thank goodness the nationals have again missed the boat yet again (because the region is fairly devoid of actual talent nowadays). The Globe lost it's last vestage of sports department relevance when ESPN lured Reiss away. Breer was brought in to re-establish them but he didn't. But in the process he became a darling of the old boy network whose tentacles reach far and wide and who live to launch another of their own onto the national scene because they believe it will bolster their own relevance. This will probably be a better fit for Bert, it's clearly his goal to be a national voice even though the trait he seems to display most is one they already have in spades, he's easy to impress. He became so taken with Sparano during his Dallas stay he can't be objective about Miami at all any more. I'm sure Rex has impressed him with his openness and candor...

Will be interesting to see what they try and do with him. He doesn't have the chops to contribute much of significance on his own, which is why he landed back here to begin with. But he is going to the land of spoon fed insiders...where you can get away with less insight as long as you can be fed an impressive array of insideresque breaking news.
That was well said..he was better when he first started and worked at it BUT lured away and with National on his mind..his head swelled. His comments which were heard here locally showed that so well..Where was the OLD Breer..the one that was better??? The new version was smarmy and snotty..always trying to self promote himself by who he talked to and what it supposedly meant. Little substance..and now a young Old boy for them to promote..What could have been isn't...Big name little substance..I hope he never comes back here..I liked him years ago..but now he is stale and a lazy bum

I'll be glad to see him go; he was terrible. In fact, the whole Globe sports staff is a shadow of its former self. Sad.

hmmm. And you have your journalism degree from where again? Columbia?
All print journalism be it sports or hard news has been in decline for the past 10+ years I too like the various online sites for specific or general sports. However, there's something about sitting down with the "sunday paper" with coffee in hand that no online site can top
