Re: Schefter: Patriots trade Maroney to Denver for 2011 4th - Broncos get 2011 6 [mer

For a minute I thought it was still Shanahan in Denver which scared me since he liked LM in the draft and had a great history with RBs. Then I remembered it was McD and I felt a little better.

FlashBack!! I get them ALL the time!!

Now JMcD can use more of the run to set up the thunderous pass offense of Kyle Orton.

That was unkind.

I posted this in the BJGE thread but maybe it's better here:

... Many of the 2010 BB moves seemingly have to do with blowing up the disfunctional locker room culture of the past season. Nothing more difficult to do in an organization and the only cure is geting rid of the bad apples regardless of how they produce for the org.

I was thinking the same thing. BB's definitely given the locker room an enema this year.

I wonder if there are any other players left who might fit the "disfunctional" characterization. I've seen a few references to how the DBs in general seemed off in their own world the last few years; I love the new guys they've brought in and have to wonder how Meriweather fits in. Obviously a good player, but I don't get the Patriot Way vibe from him that I get with Chung, McCourty and Butler. Curious what others think about how he fits in longterm.

For now (2010 and 2011), Meriweather is part of a rotation with Sanders and Chung. He is a probowler. He is NOT a team leader. He is a fine player and will get plenty of action and will be a key player in Belichick's 17 man defensive rotation.

I don't think Meriweather is in any way a problem.

Maybe it's throwing in the pick as compensation for the Patriots claiming Josh Barrett earlier in the summer? Nah, it was simply that the 6th round pick was sweetener for the deal.

But seriously regarding the 6th round pick everyone seems to forget that New England had 2 6th rounders next year before the Maroney trade- one came from New Orleans as part of the David Thomas trade last year.

And I am of the belief that Maroney's trade was intentionally getting something for nothing. The rumors of them wanting to cut him ran deep during the latter part of TC and the preseason to the point that his former teammate had given up on him remaining with the team. They knew he was a goner and possibly the best they could get out of him would be a compensatory pick in 2012 that may have been a 4th rounder. The timing was odd but given the Grant situation that could have fueled talks with them using Green Bay as a way of getting a higher pick than Denver would have wanted to give up. It worked out for both sides in the end.

Good point on the former team mate giving up on him. I forgot Troy Brown's surprise cut mention a few weeks back.

But then, why now?? As others have opined, the team certainly knows more about Maroney than we possibly could. BJGE has been with us for a couple of years now and so it's not as if we suddenly got a new RB.

So why wasn't Maroney traded during the off season when we could have entertained other offers? maybe we did and nothing was forthcoming...

I am disappointed because I am sure the Pats did their homework when they drafted him that high and so can't stomach a fourth-round pick in return.

IMO, he was a decent back though not outstanding. With the new TEs this year who might block better, I was hoping he would prove the naysers wrong this season given his speed.

sigh...and life goes on...

In fairness to Bill, Maroney did help the team. He helped us to get a higher draft pick in 2011.

He turned a 1st round pick into a 4th round pick, that's not helping. I'm glad we got a good return from him, but it's like buying a new car, finding that it really sucks, and turning it in for 1/4 what you bought it for.

how about the first round pick we wasted on him?

It wasn't a waste of a first round pick.

Except for the year he was injured most of, Maroney's been good for a consistent 750+ yards a year at 4.2 per carry. If that's a wasted pick, I think the Pats should be looking for ways to waste many more.

Well, after 4 1/2 years, that's about what you get when you trade in a car.

Every trade's different. In this case the season's already started, and BB had obviously soured on Maroney and was probably going to cut him. Ideally we'd get a higher pick, but we do very well with 4th rounders and it should be a mid-round 4th. BB doesn't think about what round he initially took the guy in, he does an honest evaluation and in this case closed the book on Maroney as quickly as he could.

I am just thankful that we won't have to listen to anymore Maroney debates.

This move answers all doubts about whether or not Maroney lived up to his potential in BB's eyes.

Posters will struggle to think of anything to talk about now

LOL. I haven't posted much here lately, but I've been around long enough to know that tomorrow we will be arguing about some other player just as fervently.

Anybody remember "There is no way David Patten makes this team!" ???

A classic thread.

Re: Schefter: Patriots trade Maroney to Denver [merged]

I wonder if Taylor's performance Sunday helped seal the deal.

4 years of dancing, lazyness andreally bad playing with so low effort sealed the deal. Great news fot us .

Consider that the Patriots were so pass happy in his time that he was in the parlance of Strat-o-matic "Marony wide left, guessed wrong" - meaning that if the Pats didn't pass much his average would have been about 3.6 YPC.

He was a bust, there is no getting around it.

you are right, bad choice of word especially considering that I am in the camp that he is not that bad as others make him out to be.

I was trying to point out the relatively poor return on the investment of a first round pick.

Not so fast, if Maroney is great out there in Denver, then people will be asking why BB couldn't harness his great talent...

BB: Well, our OL is set to pass block, not run block. The AFC West sucks, and the Denver schedule isn't very impressive. Also Maroney doesn't have to make reads out there. The coaches out there don't mind if he dances and doesn't get plus yardage on a lot of plays...

+1, -3, +4, +4, -1, +6, -2, +5, -2, +31 - it's still 4.5 YPC.
