Patriots cut Payroll

Much to the surprise of many fans, the Patriots have reduced payroll, according to Miguel's figures, by $6.4 million dollars, in an uncapped year. ( $127.8 to $121.4 million dollars ).

Many had speculated that after not signing any impact free agents during the 2009 offseason, and with having the "Final 8" free agent advantage over teams such as the Colts and Jets, that the Pats would take advantage of the uncapped 2010 season.

Further, many had speculated that the Patriots were saving their money for significant free agent signings during June 4th cuts and season ending releases. That might now appear unlikely as well.

Perhaps the money is being saved to apply to Brady's soon to be announced contract.

Keep in mind there is a difference between cap dollars and actual money being spent in a given year. In addition, there seem to be a lot fewer contracts being extended this year throughout the entire NFL due to the uncertainty of the CBA. My guess is that if teams - including the Pats - knew what the next cap figure was and that there would definitely be football next year, then there would have been more contract extensions - and those payroll figures would be different. Just one contract extension - Brady's - would alter those numbers significantly.

According to my figures the Patriots' 2010 cap figure is for $121,411,796 with 65 signed or tendered players (58 active, 1 Reserve/Did Not Report, and 6 Injured Reserve). I think that my numbers are off by about $2.5 million and that the Patriots' true salary cap number is in the $124 million range. There is no cap limit for the 2010 season. That disclaimer would not account for Brady making more than $6.5M this season or the fact they had intended on signing the cowboy OLineman for $7M. Those moves if made in 2010 would likely add about $45-60M to the 2010 payroll and at least another $10M to the cap...

Before everyone starts arguing that the Pat's just became cheap, the 6 Mill difference seems exactly what they were expecting to pay Mankins. They are just playing as if there was a cap... unlike the Jets, who are going all in without knowing how the rules will change with the new CBA...

No, the Jets shed payroll. They cut Thomas Jones and Alan Faneca, 2 of their highest paid players. The players they brought in were not expensive at all, they were either over the hill and cheap (lt, Taylor) or given away by their former team for next to nothing in the final year of their rookie contract (Holmes, Cromartie).
I think you will find that across the NFL if there were a cap, the league combined would be many, many millions under it.
Did everyone forget there was almost no free agent market this year?

You're forgetting they extended Brick and Mangold to eventually top tier deals, although they each have to get to the next league year before those deals start to hurt (with Harris and Revis to come...).

Right, they didnt throw much cash money at them. The topic was spending THIS year. We also signed Wilfork and Bodden to long term deals, and certainly will with Brady/

I'm sure Thomas Jones was due to get paid the same amount as LT is actually getting paid this year

edit: My mistake. By releasing him they avoided a $3m roster bonus, even though the base salaries are the same

It's hard to know when the other shoe will drop (actually that should be plural). The Patriots seem to spend more wisely than most (hey they all make mistakes in a business where you have to gamble), but I am hoping there is one of three announcements as a result

1. TB's long deserved contract
2. Marquee signing with big contract
3. Mankin's pique resolved
4. Multiple signings of solid intelligent veterans

Funnily the one I dont mind about is 2. as these have tended to be the biggest gambles for any team over the years, and the house usually wins.

As you've numbered them, I'd love to see them in this order: 1, 4, 3, 2. Actually, I don't even care about 2 very much. Mankins would be nice, but I'd be much happier hearing 1 and 2 had happened.
