Owners to vote on 18 games season

Re: Owners to Vote on18 games season

I have no problem with the season going deep into February. The players will get something, or more likely, keep what they have. I want the second bye week but I also want 3 pre-season games. Expand the roster but not the 45 and consider a small disabled list and a practice squad that allows you to deposit a couple of protected rookies there (for one season).

Incidently, this is a huge advantage to northern teams that play outside in January.

Re: Owners to Vote on18 games season

And please regardless, please for the love of God, no more talk of only allowing players to only play x number of games a season. It is silly, it won't work, and it is never going to happen.

It would also favor the systems like the Patriots, who favor, as depth would become much more important. But that doesn't come close to balancing the damage to the game that extending the season will cause.

The damage to the game caused by more players being allowed to play, more money coming into the owners, more money going out to the players, more money to the bars that show the games, more weekends to enjoy football, or the poor dead presidents who will have to share their Birthday with the superbowl recovery day?

More players dillutes the talent pool. If you haven't noticed, football is a brutal sport. The current regular season + playoffs is already a battle of attritition. It's not just about season-ending injries, it's about the nagging injuries players play through that add up over the course of the season. Adding more regular season games will shorten player's careers and water down the talent even more. Many teams will also start mailing in 3-4 games a year vs. 1 to 2 in the current system. Toss in the shortened preseason, making players, especially young ones, less prepared at the start of the season, and it becomes a no-brainer. If you are willing to trade all this to watch two more watered down games, and the NFL making more money, it says a lot about your priorities.

Yup. Just look at the NHL and how they ruined hockey.

Re: Owners to Vote on18 games season

they should just have 5 games

16 vs 16 - you lose you're out
8 vs 8 you lose you're out
4 vs 4 you lose you're out
2 vs 2 you lose you're out
superbowl

now we don't have to worry so much about players getting hurt in that stupid 16 game season. An added bonus is the season is now 5 weeks. Football lovers should love this since its not watered down BS games that no one wants to watch. They can even cut the players down to 22 total on the roster. The talent pool will be awesome then.

If you don't agree with this, it says a lot about your priorities.

People here are funny. They say they don't want the extended season, but then every single one of you that said that knows they will watch every single game that they play, be it 12 or 24.

It is simple, fans want to watch football. They will watch the extra games, the owners will make more money. The rosters will expand so more players will be able to play and get paid. The players will get more money from the expanded revenues. And suddenly President's Day weekend will become one of the biggest party weekends of the year. Yea sure a few of us will complain a bit about watered down talent, but that won't matter to most people.

In truth it is a win win for everyone, owners, players, and fans, that is why it will pass, and shows, once again, why football is the most successful professional sport in the US.

I won't lie and say I wouldn't watch the extra games but it isn't as if I'm unhappy with watching "only" 16.

I don't like watching Earl Campbell walk. I don't like hearing about players like Bettis that have to stretch for 30 minutes just so they can get out of bed comfortably.

More football sounds great. But the stories of many retired football players aren't. Adding two games means you just added an entire season to an eight year veteran's career. It also means that Tom Brady would probably be a year closer to retirement than he is now. Does that not matter at all?

Lets water it down even more... i agree it is a bad idea..BUT the owners will push for it..the MORE is better mentality misses the fact that quality will go down a great deal. Watching tired teams in the playoffs is better football?? JUST because its a PO game doesn't make it better..BAD IDEA these owners have no idea how much they will ruin the game.

I'm against the idea for both player safety and game importance reasons, but this will be a surefire success for the NFL as far as ratings and revenue go. As another poster said, fans will say that they won't watch the games, but they will.

Here's my predicition - 18 game schedule get passed - BUT - somehow Goodell ruins the "Super Bowl Sunday is the day before Presidents Day" theory and we get it the Sunday AFTER Presidents Day. Then I weep.

I know it's all about the money, but I think they're making a mistake for more reasons than the obvious one that it puts a lot of extra pressure on the players' health.

The 16 game season with one bye week seems perfect to me. With 18 games, two bye weeks, a later start and playing all the way to President's day, the season is almost as long as baseball's, five full months. I think the reason fans "can't wait" for Week 1 to kickoff is precisely because this isn't like baseball, where, frankly, they could start in May for all I care and for how I follow April ball.

I just think they have a terrific formula now in terms of fan intensity and player quality. Why tinker with it? I know, I know. The answer is greed, but in the long run I doubt they're helping themselves that much.

I haven't heard anyone say that they won't watch the extra games.

Re: Owners to Vote on18 games season

That's literally the only reason to do this.

And there you have it.

Re: Owners to Vote on18 games season

One more cent:

>>16 game player eligibility rule - each player may only play in 16 of 18 games each year. While this risks watering down the product, it does not bring any more risk to the players.

Do the math on this one and tell us how many players each team would have to have to make this happen.. I think you'll find that you'll almost double the roster and there is no way the that is going to happen.

How will the owners be getting more money? The owners already charge full price for pre-season games. That includes on parking and everything else. So where is all this "new" money going to come from?

How will the players be getting more money? The owners want the players to get less money by reducing the % the players get from the 60% mark (or whereever it's at now) back to 55%. And, again, where is this "new" money coming from?

I can see how the BARS would make more money.

I'm interested in where the all this "new" money for the players and owners would be coming from.

How will owners get more money? TV revenues, increased attendance, more advertising, more fans in the stadiums, how is that for a start.

1) Primarily, TV revenue. The networks will pay more for 18 meaningful games than they will for 16 meaningful games.

2) Ticket revenue. Fact is even teams like the Patriots do not sell out preseason games - oh sure, they announce each game as a "sell out" but fact is you can walk up to the box office 10 minutes before the game tomorrow night and score a pair. Plenty of great seats for tomorrow night's game still available! So there is certainly ticket revenue there to be made.

3) The players will expect (and receive) some serious additional compensation in return. Aside from an across-the-board raise, there will no doubt be other concessions made.

On top of increased beer and food sales at the stadium from fans who are there longer watching the game, as opposed to the fans who leave the stadium after the starters are pulled.

I don't think we're going to get an absolute "The Super Bowl will always be held the Sunday before Presidents' Day" decree. It will probably work out that way most of the time, but take this year for example. Presidents' Day was on February 15, which means that the Super Bowl would have been held on February 14.

If they ever hold a Super Bowl on February 14, the nation will erupt into a state of all out Civil War. Anarchy, chaos and mayhem will rule the day. All societal rules of law and order will completely cease to exist. Also they would probably adjust a Super Bowl around Mardi Gras for those years the game is being held in New Orleans.
