Default Re: B. Spikes the MAN at ILB?
Spikes better be able to cover seeing as with the way that even weak offenses try and go after the weakest point of the defense, he will get abused. Teams can still line up in a 2/3 WR 2/1TE 1RB package which has the capacity to both run and pass and let us put Spikes on the field and make him cover passes.

Spikes better do all THAT or else.....

How about if everybody just gave the kid a chance to work himself into a role and GROW in his first, ROOKIE, season...instead of heaping every known responsibility any GROUP of veteran LB's have ever faced as a UNIT,on one player. There is no possible way Spikes will meet the expectations demanded in these two posts.

Hey now, don't put the "he better" thing on me. I'm more of a "wouldn't it be cool if..." guy myself.

Sorry if the question has already been asked, but:

Why the F didn't Warren get his hip operated-on during any of the previous FIVE off-seasons?

Duh... Because it a only a two year old injury perhaps.

Sorry if the question has already been asked, but:

I believe he had one or two other things operated on in the off season. And it was revealed he reinjured the hip in the third practice. I don't believe this hip operation is a common operation either.

Sorry, but that's my recollection, the links to those stories are all over the place, unfortunately.

NESN's Jeff Howe ranks the tackles and ends according to his perception of the current depth chart:

Defensive Tackle
1. Vince Wilfork: One of the best in the league
2. Myron Pryor: Getting a lot of work in camp
3. Mike Wright: He still moves inside in some formations, most often when Wilfork swings to end
4. Kyle Love: Not a bad summer for the undrafted rookie
5. Kade Weston: Hard to find him

Defensive End
1. Mike Wright: With Ty Warren out, the difference between the left and right side has been a little more ambiguous. Each end is earning his reps across the line
2. Gerard Warren: Belichick loves his professionalism
3. Damione Lewis: Hasn’t practiced since suffering unknown injury in Saints game. Looks like top backup at this point
4. Darryl Richard: Hasn’t stuck out
5. Brandon Deaderick: Still looking for a marquee highlight
6. Ron Brace: Looks like he'll get his early work at end

Longtime reserve defensive lineman Mike Wright gets his shot by Ian Rapoport for the Boston Herald:

Even prior to learning the severity of Ty Warren’s hip ailment, Wright was focusing on contributing mightily after five years of serving as a backup.

“I was already (saying), ‘Let’s go!’ before Ty was even hurt,” Wright said. “It’s a huge loss when one of your starters goes down. Ty’s a great player, we wish him the best, we’re all praying for him. But we got to move on and worry about the season right now.”

At times, Wright has shone. Last year, for instance, he had six tackles and a sack in the second game against the Bills, a performance coach Bill Belichick lauded. He had two sacks in the regular-season game against the Ravens, too.

Then came an offseason that included Wright securing a coveted parking spot for his participation in the offseason conditioning program.

“I love working out,” Wright said. “Nice I got a nice parking space out of it.”

Wilfork says no hard feelings with Burgess, calls out Meriweather - Projo Pats Blog

Q: Myron Pryor was a surprise last year. How have you seen him? There's so much about the jump to the second year.

VW: He's working well. He's been doing everything the coach asks him. He's been getting better. Not just him, but everybody. They were first year guys last year, now they're moving into their second year and you always see a little development there. You definitely see that on guys who were rookies last year. Now all of a sudden, they have a year under their belt. They've had an offseason with us. Working well together. It's those little things. Just one year, just seeing how we do things, they grew from that. That's what we need. We need everyone to grow. We need everyone to be working toward that one goal. Right now I think we have everybody working toward that one goal.

Same link. Have i said I love Wilfork? He was the QB...

Q: When you broke down the film from yesterday's practice, was it a tough plane ride for you when you looked at [your] passing performance? I heard there was some Miami favoritism [with] the first pass to [Brandon] Meriweather. Some of those guys were saying, "what's going on?"

VW: I'll tell you what. Meriweather will never get a pass from me again. We didn't even have pads on and he got the gator arms. He acted like he didn't want to catch the ball. I'll tell you what. The defense won. We won. We scored on the second series [out of four times]. Get the ball in the endzone. That's what we did. We did a really good job of that. But you know what, as I move forward, that's something that I have to look at the film and just study and see what the defense showed me out there and come back with another game plan.

Ha ha

Based on the preseason game vs the saints:

Myron Pryor really struggled at NT, like mike wright he looks more suited to a sub package 4-man DT. It was against 3rd stringers but Kyle Love seemed to be more suited to back up NT.

G.Warren looks better than expected, our run defense would be very solid if T.Warren wasn't on IR.

Am a little bit worried about RDE, M.Wright is not solid enough there, but I'm not sure who I'd have there instead.

WEEI's Christopher Price on some veterans on the bubble: Bubble Watch, Part 2

Ron Brace: He took a step in the right direction this week just by returning to the field, but his long-term status with the team remains in doubt, so he stays on the list, at least for now. But it’s important to remember that no matter how bad things might get for Brace this year, it remains highly unlikely the Patriots would cut him — they waited two years before they released Chad Jackson, after all. And Brace’s pedigree and lack of experience along the defensive line make it likely that the numbers are in his favor, at least right now.

Is patriots rookie Brandon Deaderick one answer at defensive end? by Ian Rapoport for the Boston Herald:

When Ty Warren went down for the season with a hip injury, it opened the door of opportunity wide open. Mike Wright and Gerard Warrenbecame the likely starters at end, but the battle for playing time is up in the air behind them.

One name to consider is rookie Brandon Deaderick.

Not the most high-profile of the draft picks, Deaderick was a seventh round selection — one of four. On a stellar college defense at Alabama, the 6-foot-4, 304-pounder certainly didn’t garner the most press with guys like Terrence Cody and Rolando McClain on the same field.

Yet he’s gritty and tough and has played in a 3-4 scheme that’s similar to this one. It also looks like he’s learning quickly. When Wright and Warren needed a sub a week ago against the Saints, it was Deaderick who got the call off the bench and made one tackle.

I just want to stick the needle in real deep, and twist it for the idiot-posters who have been proclaiming the "Brace Embarrassment". :snob:

NT are usually seen but seldom heard from, or noticed,as they absorb double team blocks, tying up and using up blockers.

Brace entered the game and within a few plays, pursued down the line leveling a G trying to stop him and wrapped up a RB two yards deep behind the LOS. He then ripped the ball loose and Forced a Fumble that Mackenzie recovered. He did it down the line outside the Tackle area so he covered more ground than most NT ever do, shed like brushing away a fly, got into the backfield, and completely blew the play up.

I watched more of his play and he was completely controlling his area of the LOS.

No, Ron Brace is NOT A BUST! Welcome to a much stouter DL. :rocker:

Yeah glad to see it isn't just me who thought Ron Brace played very well tonight. It's ridiculous how he got written off because he didn't make any noise as a rookie playing behind Wilfork.

Some people seem to think that Belichcik traded Seymour without realizing that Mike Wright couldn't play against guys up to 30 pounds heavier all game long without wearing down.

But Belichick is no fool. He never planned on that happening. If one guy can't take the abuse, then split the abuse in half, and let two guys handle it, was the plan.

Belichick anticipated platooning Mike Wright @ 295 and Jarvis Green, @ 285, alternating them and letting each get a blow. That would keep them both fresher and able to compete. Unfortunately Jarvis got hurt, and Wright had to play too many snaps, alone.

Now the same Cassandras are clucking and wooing that Ty Warren is gone and we won't be able to stop the run, finally comprehending that the "OLB problem" wasn't the real issue, at all. And Belichick in the off-season, never treated it as such.

Nonsense.

Ther is more than enough talent now, that was unavailable then to allow all to to platoon for freshness. Wright and Lewis; Warren and Pryor; and Wilfork and Brace, can be the platoons to keep the DL stopping the run.

Neither Lewis @ 312, nor Warren @ 325, were on the Team. Pryor @ 310, and Brace @ 330 may as well not have been. Both were not anything other than raw rookies last season, trying to figure out the NFL, and being overwhelmed by it all. Only Wilfork @ a nominal 325 (really about 350), and Ty Warren @ 300 were not out sized by the opposition.

Now it's different. People are planning and scheming to do this. I predicted that the Defensive Line would be stout, and judging off the Saints and Falcons games, it has been just that.

Furthermore some stout backups pieces have been added in Spinks, MacKenzie, and Chung.

Keep telling yourself this. Mike Wright/Jarvis Green rotation was BB's plan? The front three are the most valuable players in a BB defense. Jarvis was cut for crying out loud--and you're saying that having him rotate with Wright would have would have resulted in a solid RDE combination?

What ar eyou mumblng about? Cut? I was speaking of the Plan when Seyour was traded prior to the 2009 season starting.

What planet are you on? Or is it filled with Green [Rancid] Cheese from the Joisey Swamps?

Who'll be the idiot if Connor Barwin accrues 8+ sacks, and nobody here has that many?

What has that got to do with Brace's play. You are going to continue to rag on Brace because Belichick decided to select someone else in the Draft, other than your pet Binkie?

Belichick and company selected him, and he is playing well, after the typical rookie acclimation. Blame BB or the Pats FO and Scouting if you want, but Brace is guilty of nothing at all.

I'd have liked a raw Connor Barwin too, but despite your wishes, the Team already has enough OLB Pass Rush to generate 18 sacks in the 2009 season from the OLB position, about 3 more than their Quota.

Where were the ILB sacks, or the Interior DL sacks? Or the Safety Blitz sacks? Those were the missing sacks, captain. That's what BB sought to rectify with Chung, Spinks, McKenzie, Pryor, Deadrick, Weston etc.

Pack up your marbles and Go home.
