Depends on how the kids develop......... totally.

#2 is the most obvious choice to me at this point, but it could EASILY slid to #1 if there are 2-3 very good surprises among the 1st and 2nd year guys.

LB Aaron Schobel maybe, WR Rod Owens, S Josh Barrett, S Brett Lockett, David Patten, C Eric Ghiaciuc, - not many starters here. Unsexy yes, mediocre yes, encouraging no.

Mayo was a great rookie with veteran guys around him and got hurt last year - not exactly a proven NFL stud. Even head case Adalius Thomas turned in a pretty decent season mayo's 1st year. The jury is still out on Mayo for this year. We can only hope. The linebacker corps is the major weakness on this defense. If TBC, Guyton, Mayo and both rookies form a solid corps, this will be a great defense. Belichick on the case gives us lots of reasons to be optimistic that this can happen, but we need to see these guys consistently in the right place at the right time.

If part of your assessment is with Jerod Mayo at ILB 'the jury is still out' and 'we can only hope' then our assessment of the NFL would have to be that 32 teams go 8-8.

Yes. The assessment here is that Jerrod Mayo has the potential to be a big time ILB, but it is by no means certain for 2010-2011. This linebacking corps is the major question mark on this team. Does this group (with only two sure starters in TBC and Mayo) give you the same level of confidence as Bruschi, Vrabel, Ted Johnson and Roman Phifer? You're damn right we can only hope these LBs as a group get to even 90% of the ability to play the run and the pass in the 3-4 as did the 2004 group.

I don't understand the rest of the NFL crack. In the AFC there are several teams with more proven defenses at this stage like the Colts, Ravens, Steelers, Jets, Bengals and Broncos. The Pats were right in the mix defensively with those teams last year but the youth is still a big question mark for this year.

So what do you think AndyJohnson? Is this a top five defense? Is so the Pats end up in the 11-5 or 12-4 range and all is great in Patriots Nation. You might be right.

Chose second option. Hopeful things will be ok, but when so much hinges on first and second year players, it's best to see what they can do before renting the duck boats...

If 'the jury is still out' and 'we can only hope' is how you assess Jerod Mayo then 'the jury is still out' on every team in the NFL and there isnt enough information to form an opinion about any team.
That is my point. Why have a discussion if you place a player of Mayos caliber in that category in his 3rd season?

QB: A+
RB: B-
WR: A-
TE: B
OL: C+
D-line: B
ILBs: B+
OLB: C-
CBs: B+
S: B-

QB: obvious here. We have the best in the business under center for us.

RB: Faulk is still one of the best pass catching RBs in the league and a very good pass blocker. Fred Taylor is a solid inbetween the tackles RB. My expectations are low for Maroney. If he can limit the fumbling then I'll be happy.

WR: Moss is still an elite player who is hungry for a ring and a new contract, Welker should still be Mr Reliable for Brady, and we have many new faces for the 3rd receiver spot that should be much improved from Sam Aiken from last year. One of Tate, Price, or Holt should grab the 3rd receiver spot. Not to mention Edelman

TE: Young and unproven, good depth though. I love Hernandez and think he can be an impact player right away. Who knows with rookies, though.

OL: Logan being out worries me, Kazcur being out worries me even more. Nonetheless, Vollmer should be an improvement at RT over Kazcur from last year.

D-Line: Warren and Lewis both look like solid additions. Provide some flexibility and versatility.

ILBs: Mayo should be back to his rookie form this year and become a leader on the D. It's not an A just because Spikes and Mckenzie are unproven.

OLBs: Really worried about that OLB opposite Tully, hopefully Cunningham emerges.

CBs: Like this group a lot, but again, unproven.

S: Meriweather needs to improve IMO, hopefully Chung can help this team out.

I chose door #2...Good could be great - Will make playoffs and could get hot and win it all. I think next year we will really start to see great things.

Too many unknown variables at this point. I'll get back to you in the preseason.

Quarterback - A
Running Backs - C+
Wide Receivers - B+
Tight Ends - C-
Offensive Line - B-

Defensive Line - B
Linebackers - C+
Safeties - B
Corners - C+

Until proven otherwise.

In conclusion 87% of PatsFans think highly of the team, and almost 70% can keep a thread on topic...
