Pats should keep Adalius Thomas

Just because you're new here in the forum doesn't even come close to meaning that you're 'stupid.'

It's all good, no worries.

The F in TFB means exactly what you think it does, as in 'that's Tom F'in Brady right there.'

Adalius Thomas simply has gone by AD his whole life, just a nickname, most likely derived from the first 2 letters in his name--ADalius. He was very quick to point out to New England reporters when he signed here that it wasn't AT, but AD.

A good veteran poster, Ray Clay, has pointed out that it stands for 'all day,' and that could very well be true also. My guess is that it originated from ADalius at some point.

Don't worry about posting questions etc, there are some who have simply had their patience worn down from many new guys who act like jack-asses.

I'm pretty good at remembering dumb stuff, not so good at important things. I tried to look it upon Google, but the post here was already number two so it seems lost in the ether.

Maybe someone here will back me up. It was reported in the papers that his nickname in Baltimore stood for "All Day". I was kidding about the farkin middle name for Tom. To the new poster, if you're not getting insulted here, your just not trying, jump right in.

The open question is whether AD is worth $4.9M as an ILB.

I think this is a good topic of discussion. A lot of people on the draft board think we could use a good SILB so Mayo can play WILB and roam sideline to sideline. That's why there's a lot of talk of McClain, Spikes, etc.

Since he basically became a two-down player in 09, anyone else think if BB and him mend the fences that AD would make a very good two-down SILB? I think he could be pretty effective for us as a SILB, and would allow Mayo to roam sideline to sideline more. Guyton could come in on 3rd downs as a coverage guy. McKenzie can be eased into his role instead of being thrown into the fire a year off ACL surgery. As we've seen, it often takes a good amount of time on the field before you are back to normal, which can be seen if you look at some of the struggles of Brady and Merriman to name a few.

I'd think AD inside, given his pass rushing history, would also give us more opportunities to blitz our inside LB's on some A-gap blitzes to really collapse the pocket. He seems like he's built to stack and shed at a mammoth 6'2 270.

It's pretty clear we need to upgrade OLB and hopefully get something from Crable. I don't think AD would be all that happy with this position change, but I think it could work. If you had a rotation of Mayo, AD, Guyton, and McKenzie, I think that's pretty solid. You can address OLB via FA/Draft. Just kicking around some ideas.

That's not my concern at all. we have to fill the position and no amount of money will give us someone that knows our system.

There reaches a point where a player is not working for the coach and the team and at that point, even a superstar is a cancer. If he's working for the team it would be ridiculous to dump him. Have you looked at the rest of the LB corps?

It's been proved by teams like our own in 2001, if you have the attitude you can overcome less than stellar talent at some positions. The all pro level teams wrecked by the one bad apple syndrome are too many to recall.

For one uncapped year, I'd say why not?

Do you think he'd be an upgrade at SILB? I think he can help against the run and give you some versatility in blitzes, as he is would be better a blitzing up the middle than Guyton IMO. I think if you keep him around for this year and you let Guyton develop a little more and ease McKenzie back in and let him learn the D and develop, it could set you up with a good ILB corps in 2010 with dare I say a "vet leader" , and hopefully a good young corps of ILB in 2011 with Mayo, Mckenzie, Guyton ready to take full time difference makers.

IIRC, ADT played SILB during '07 before Colvin went IR. Now, however, I think that the relationship btwn him & Bill is so unrepairable that he would never go quietly back inside. He might put up such a stink that the entire TC could be poisoned. What a shame. So I say: either keep him at OLB or trade him to a team that would not instantly flip him to the jesters.

I wish we knew what the real story is...what did he do to piss of BB so much that he is willing to essentially dump a key member of the defense for a bag of peanuts.

I doubt it is because he can not play football anymore....

There's far too much information missing for us to accurately assess whether keeping or trading Adalius low is better. It's all going to come down to whether BB thinks Adalius will help the team more than something else he can get in a trade. I'm not as confident as others that his departue is a foregone conclusion. We really don't have any idea of the magnitude of the situation, but we do know that BB kept playing him except for the 2 games he got benched. The fact that he started the last game of the season makes me believe that BB isn't as set on throwing him away as others here believe.

Yes he did and he was pretty good in that role from what I remember. A few weeks ago, AD was on Felger and Mazz and he talked about the different roles he had with the team. He said in 07 he felt like he was "playing good soldier" by coming in and changing positions and playing inside before Colvin went down. By that statement and some of the comments he made after that (about how his role changed after coming back from a broken arm in 08), you are probably right in that he wouldn't go back quietly. It's a shame, because I think he could be really effective as a SILB for us.

For some reason I don't think BB thinks AD is worth it at ANY price at ANY position. Perhaps we need a thread merge?

If AD were not going to the JETs if cut, would anyone really want him to stay
with his negativity??
So what if he goes to the JETs, he'll just make them slower and may even
disrupt what they got going.
I'd like to see our guys knocking him around a few times a year.

It is possible that when the Owners and Players agree to start playing again in 2011, that they may not just wipe the slate clean It isn't just a possibility. They already said they wouldn't. But so what?

...that is if the Patriots just let Adalius go now...perhaps they make the PATS account for that prorated portion of his roster bonus in 2011 or 2012 You mean signing bonus, but of course they will make the Pats account for it in 2011. But they will whether he is cut or not, so what difference does it make?

There is no guarantee from the league that his prorated bonus portion will just disappear for cap purposes
It won't disappear, but so what? You keep implying that cutting him will INCUR a cap hit. Try to understand this:
a) that money has already been paid
b) $8.8 mil is still on the books as a pro-rated signing bonus
c) of the $8.8 mil, $4.4 would have been on the cap this year, but it won't matter because there is no cap.
d) the other $4.4 mil will be on the cap in 2011 whether he is cut or not. There is nothing to be saved cap-wise by keeping Thomas on the roster.

There is no extra cap hit to be incurred by cutting Thomas.

Cutting Thomas saves about $10 mil in salary. If he is worth $5 mil a year, then keep him. If he isn't worth $5 mil a year, then cut him.

The cap doesn't enter into the equation.

Send him to Seattle, San Fran for a seventh round pick... and call it a day.. Would take that then see him twice a year lining up for the jets..

I agree, there has to be a team out there willing to part ways with a 5th 6th or 7th rounder for him.

This is what I can't get. Why are we so afraid of AD going to the Jets? If folks are fearful of AD in the green and white that tells me a few things.

1. BB did not use him properly and Tubby Rex will in his system
2. The fandom is fearful that AD will divulge the entire Pats defensive calls and we will be DOOMED.
3. For whatever reason, people think that AD lallygagged here and won't in NY.

I'd prefer him to go somewhere outside of the AFCE as I do think AD has something left in the tank but not enough to make me afraid of him lining up in New York.

If its a 7th from SF and a 4th from NYJ, gimme the 4th.

I really dont want to see any of his stupid late QB hits on Tom Brady...

Ah. I see your angle, Sean. Think AD is that vengeful vs Brady enough to the point of a late-hit?

BB I tend to think he might be a little spiteful towards...
