OT: Favre continues his streak

Re: Favre continues his streak

You do realize that he was throwing on the run when he made that terrible decision. He was injured yes, but all he had to do was throw it away, or keep running and slide, or run out of bounds....any of these and the Vikes have a great chance to win that game. Favre did a great job this year not making those decisions....until that last play!

Yes, he was on the run, and clearly not at 100% doing so. He also didn't have the yardage in front of him that Aikman claimed. There was no way he was getting 10+ yards on that run. An incomplete pass means it's a 56 yard field goal attempt. Blaming the throw is just ridiculous. He was put into a position where he needed to make a play, but his receivers were covered. Brady and Manning would both have been just as screwed. Well, they'd have been more screwed, really, since even an injured Favre is more mobile than either of them.

I was actually rooting for the Saints FG kicker to shank it in OT so Favre would have a chance for a pick-6 in OT.

Yes, I'm sure the multiple fumbles that were lost, the multiple fumbles that were recovered but still resulted in loss of yards, the multiple fumbles which could have gone the other way had absolutely nothing to do with the score.

I mean, as long as fumbles don't give the ball to the other team, anyway.

Re: Favre continues his streak

Technically his last pass last year was not an interception as the Jets got the ball back with little time remaining. I get where you are going with this though.

The one awful part is that the game will probably be remembered for this INT but the reality is that Favre played well. If not for that final INT, I would actually argue that this was Favre's finest hour, with him fighting back despite him being absolutely destroyed physically yesterday.

Exactly. The people blaming Favre and Favre alone for losing this game should also remember how many times the Vikings (specifically Adrian Peterson) put the ball on the ground yesterday to kill drives.

I was really pulling for him. Before the game I was rooting for the Saints, but playing in that loud dome, under pressure, after being injured and making play after play, that Favre showed grit, I tell you.

Reminds me of that scene in "Hang 'em High" when the judge announces to the town to wake up (late at night) to see "the best there ever was" in lawmen, has come in with 3 desperados in tow.

If Favre wins that game and then won teh superbowl he is the greatest of all time, no doubt.

But he blew it.

Mighty casey struck out.

How horribly sad. And now he can't rest until he comes back and tries again.

Re: Favre continues his streak

I really, REALLY wish you guys would lay off Favre. The man is a first Ballot hall of famer, one of the best football players of ALL TIME.

I think some of us are just a little bit jealous of Minnesota that they got Favre and we're stuck with Brady. I've never said this on the board before because I didn't want to get flamed, but screw it. I think Favre is better than Brady.

There, I said it.

Sure some people will throw out the fact that Brady has three times as many Super Bowl wins as Favre, or that Favre's # of interceptions could be confused for the Gross Domestic Product of a small country, but that's the Gunslinger in him, you live by it and die by it.

As we know from watching Brett in the NFL over all these years he's a humanitarian and a man of the people. I can't tell you how many times I've picked up the newspaper and seen where Brett has stopped at the side of the road to help somebody refuel their car or change a tire, and he's a guy who cares about people. So whatever happens he will, of course, do the right thing. He will probably, if I had to bet, will step aside and let Tavaris continue as the Quarterback of the Vikings. Because that's the kind of guy he is, putting others first.

Now that that unpleasantness is behind us, and on a completely unrelated note, I was surfing the web the other day and I came upon this ad for a new burger at McDonalds and I think you all should give it a try it looks really delicious.

Extra credit to anyone who can identify where I got the last paragraph of my empassioned Favre defense. (And apologies to my fellow Pats fans for even joking Favre is better than Brady.)

We should get a pool going of the date of his retirement and the date of his unretirement.

I find myself agreeing with you a lot

I posted somewhere else that putting this loss on Favre is just stupid.

They wouldn't have been in this game if it wasn't for him and they would have walked out with a victory had his RBs and WRs kept the football in their hands and not on the ground.

That game was an absolute disgrace to protecting the football. It's really a shame because despite their 5 turnovers or whatever it was the Saints still needed an OT field goal to win. The Vikings would have handled them if it had not been for the stupid mistakes

Re: Favre continues his streak

They weren't in FG range at that time...

And they damn sure weren’t when after he threw Int were they?

But they could have taken a shot at it with a few ticks left.

Farve himself: “I probably should have ran it,” Favre said. “I don’t know how far I could have gotten. But in hindsight, that’s probably what I should have done. I don’t know how many yards we needed for a field goal, but I knew we needed some. I was just late to Sidney.”

Re: Favre continues his streak

Well, to be fair, this year he played like hell in the last game. If overtime rules were different, they might have won.

For whatever else you can say about Favre, for this game, he was NOT the reason his team lost.

Favre had ONE responsibility on 3rd and 15... do NOT turn the ball over. My cousin was rooting for the Vikes and before that play said "Favre don't try to be a hero". What does Favre do, he throws accross his body accross the field for what? an extra 5-10 yards. Longwell probably would have hit the 51 yarder. Favre did the ONE thing he could to lose that game at that point, although his RBs put him in that situation to begin with.

Oh come on are you for real? A 51 yarder and I think it was 56 actually but either way, for the game with all that noise under all that pressure, whats the percentage chances of that happening?

Personally I would never have enough faith in a kicker to make that FG given the situation and distance.

Favre made the WORST possible decision, period. There is not a single thing he could have thought to do that would have been worse than throwing accross his body on the run to the opposite side of the field.

Re: Favre continues his streak

Emoney, you're neglecting everything else the Vikings did to lose that game.

Or aren't fumbles in the redzone a problem?

My first post contained:

I'm not blaming the entire game on Favre, I just can't get over the fact that in that exact situation he chose to do what he did.

Look, the bottom line here is that the Vikings should have never been put in the position for an injured 40 year old Brett Favre, the guy whom the Saints defense took turns annihilating the entirety of the game, to have to save the game. The Vikings fumbled six times and lost three of them. On one of the occasions, the Vikings lost more than ten yards and got the fumble left and Favre threw a zinger over the middle for (I believe) 17 yards and a first down. Those were absolute drive killers. Without them, we're probably talking about the Vikings winning by two TD's.

Was the throw poor and ill advised? Absolutely. However, Favre played a great game and was the biggest reason of why the Vikings were in it. Personally? I hope he comes back next season. I hope he doesn't waffle on it (he probably will) and comes back for another year with the Vikings. He's, quite obviously, still capable of playing. On top of that, the league is better with him in it, IMO.

There are plenty of areas to give blame. Including Favre, who had one of his worst games of the season (i'd say worst, but he played very bad against St Louis). We arent mentioning the two times he missed Harvin open for a potential TD.

I'm really pissed right now, being a Vikings fan. I honestly think that fourth and 1 should have been overturned because Pierre Thomas FUMBLED the ball, and therefore forward progress was lost. Not only that, but PI? Leber barely touched him and it was uncatchable. Us Vikings fans are used to bitter dissapointment, though....

A 56 yarder is not easy but it at least gives you a shot to win the game. That INT was terrible, no way around it, and it ended up being fatal for Minnesota. With OT rules the way they are you can't blow any chance at points, PERIOD. The INT's took what would have been a great performance to an okay one, especially that last pick. It's basic fundamentals, INT is the ONLY thing you don't do in that situation. No excuses, no way to butter it up

The team made so many mistakes as a whole and were lucky to even be in it at the end. We didn't deserve to win it, plain and simple. Yet we still had a shot. There is no excuse for Favre's INT at the end of regulation. But I can probably list 10-15 major blunders that the team made that could have changed our fortunes. All but 2 of those had nothing to do with Favre.

When you lose the turnover margin at 5-1 and still have a chance to win the game, then your team played its heart out and never quit. I am still proud of this team.

It was indoors and Longwell is a good kicker. I'm not saying it's a sure thing, what FG is, Hell kickers miss extra points for God's sake! But it's still a better chance than rolling right and then throwing across your body.
