Dean Pees won't be back with New England Patriots, sources say - ESPN Boston

Patriots defensive coordinator Dean Pees, whose contract expires at the end of the month, will not return to the team, according to two sources familiar with the situation. Pees had served as the team's coordinator since 2006.

The Patriots ranked fifth in fewest points allowed in 2009, although the defense -- which was transitioning from a veteran unit to one with more youth -- struggled to close out games at times.

Pees initially joined the Patriots staff in 2004 after serving as head coach at Kent State from 1998 to 2003. He had spent his entire career in college prior to joining New England, serving as linebackers coach for two seasons before replacing Eric Mangini as coordinator.

As for a possible replacement, in-house candidates include linebackers coach Matt Patricia and defensive line coach Pepper Johnson.

Iam betting a ron borges article with comments from seymour tommorow how BB should fire himself.

Another Dark Horse Candidate: Will Muschamp, the D-Coordinator and Coach-in-waiting at Texas. I doubt he'd leave his plum position as the highest paid Asst. Coach in football and heir apparent at one of the best recruiting spots in the country, but he is a Saban disciple and BB has spoken highly of him in the past. When discussing the "progression" of Jonathan Wilhite in 2008, BB said:

"He was a very good player coming out of college. Will [Muschamp] coached him at Auburn so he had very good coaching. On a collegiate level, fundamentally, he was probably ahead of most players that I've coached coming out of college. He had a great college coaching background so technique wise he was pretty refined in relative terms."

Sounds like a ringing endorsement to me.

It's a longshot, but it would be an out-of-the-box pick and would provide some fresh energy and schemes. And maybe because of his lofty status in college and universal respect in coaching circles, he could be a guy who has the cajones to say "No" to Bill, something BB himself talked about needing earlier this week. I'm not sur eif he would demand a salary upgrade (maybe thinking the NFL is a step-up and better financially for him in the long-term) but his current salary at Texas is believed to be $800,000. I don't if Kraft has ever paid an assistant that much.

Tough to judge Pepper's coaching. He was "takeaway skills" coach in both good takeaway years and bad. Line play has been very mixed, given the talent level, in his time as line coach. BB famously had to position-coach Wilfork personally for a bit before Wilfork "got it" about pro techniques.

Despite what I just said, I'm inclined to think well of Pepper. But if BB wants to try somebody else -- who also has a very mixed track record -- instead in Patricia, I'm not going to squawk much.

That's exactly what I was thinking.

I wish Dean well however. That trip to the hospital at the end of the season was a bit scary and I wish him the best of health.

I'm sure Pepper will interview for the job with the giants and with the patriots. My suspicion is that if the giants make the offer, the decision will be an easy one for him.

The offer was very lucrative, and UT's AD was working like crazy to try and bring him to UTK, that said we have no idea who is going to be the HC and message boards are going crazy. I don't deny his Defensive Knowledge but I can't see him going to the NFL, college is his game.

I predicted earlier this week that Pees, the good soldier that he is, would resign, making it easy on BB. That's exactly what he did.

And as a graduate of the University of Texas (B.A. 1982) the University of Texas Law School (J.D. 1985), Longhorn Nation thinks very highly of Muschamp. It would be tremendous to see him as the Pats' D coordinator.

I'd LOVE to have Will, but there is no chance. He is head coach in waiting at Texas. I don't see him leaving there for a DC job with New England.

Pees was a scapegoat, the pats finshed 5th in the NFL points allowed despite having a defence that most would rank in the middle of the NFL in talent level.

If I'm not mistaken the Pats defence was in the top 8 in the NFL in each of the last 4 seasons in points allowed. People forget that in 2007 the Pats led the NFL in points allowed most of the season before finishing 4th and had want 9 straight quarters in the playoffs giving up just 7FG's in that span, before the 4th quarter of the Super Bowl in which they lost because of 2 plays Tyree catch and Kevin Boss 50 yard pass and run on the 1st TD drive.
