little more sensationalized than it should be but its fun

Dungy fires at Rex Ryan, and Ryan fires right back

Former Colts coach Tony Dungy was particularly critical of Jets head coach Rex Ryan and outspoken linebacker Bart Scott in the wake of their comments following yesterday's home loss to the Dolphins. Ryan suggested that the Jets out-played Miami, even though they lost the game.

"They're a great team," Scott said, the sarcasm dripping from his words. "They'll probably contend for the Super Bowl. They have a tremendous offense, great running backs, a great quarterback, a great tight end. They are stacked acrsoss the board ... They are Super Bowl contenders and they will probably take it all the way."

Said Dungy on last night's NBC highlights show: "My mother used to say, 'When you win, say very little. When you lose, say less. Bart Scott said too much today. When a team beats you twice, give them credit and go home...And I have to disagree with Rex Ryan, they didn't outplay Miami. Miami's got three-return touchdowns. That's part of the game. They've got more points than you do."

I relayed Dungy's comments to Ryan during today's press conference, and he gave it right back to the former Colts and Bucs head coach.

"I was brought up differently," said Ryan, the son of outspoken head coach Buddy Ryan. "That’s just it. I respect everybody, but I fear nobody. My thing is we’re not going to get anywhere by tiptoeing. That’s how I feel about it. People can take offense to it, that’s fine and dandy. I’m not going to change who I am or how I coach because Tony Dungy says something. I respect him, but I’m going to be who I am. I've said that from day one."

Re: ryan and dungy go back and forth

I'm wondering if Ryan has had some serious issues with bullying.

Every second word seems to be about not backing down or not fearing anyone.

Re: ryan and dungy go back and forth

Is that what they call "firing" nowadays? Gotta love the media

Re: ryan and dungy go back and forth

It's funny. He's always saying "i'll be who I am. I've always sad that." The thing is, Rex, who you are is an immature fool.

You don't tell an a-hole to "be himself" during a job interview...you don't tell someone with turrets to "be himself" in the work place. You tell them to fit the bill, and act like they should and act appropriately.

Not only is Rex Ryan's "i'll be who I am," unbelievably self-righteous, but it doesn't make sense either..

As if I didn't have enough reasons to dislike Wrecks Cryan...now he's gone and made me agree with St. Dungy!

I hope Wrecks is at the Jets for many many years to come. He's always giving me a good laugh.

Re: ryan and dungy go back and forth

i think that Wrecks Cryan is a few losses away from unraveling in front of a national audience...it won't be pretty...

LOL, whats funier is that if he siad this at the hiring process, mr. T would respond "well, thats all right, as long as u are a LOUD immature fool....."

Deal! Thanks.

ETA: Unfortunately, I couldn't find a good pic of "Ox" getting slugged in the face by the mud-wrestler chick, but I think Wrecks made pretty much this exact face more than once the past few games. HEE!

Re: ryan and dungy go back and forth

I'll be honest here, I don't like Rex Ryan because of his mouth and because of who he coaches but I do hope that he is fired or quits soon because I think he will make a very good head coach and I don't want that to be with the Jets.

Re: ryan and dungy go back and forth

Dungy's right on this one. Ryan can get his team amped for some games, but that high wears off over the course of a season. As a head coach, he should know better, but it's good for us that he doesn't.

Re: ryan and dungy go back and forth

Didn't he learn anything from his old man's experience? Buddy talked plenty of trash as an HC, and as an HC he also did squat.

reminds of a saying. something about an apple or an acorn and a tree.

Re: ryan and dungy go back and forth

Rex chafed for years under Billick, the only NFL HC who would hire him as a defensive assistant but passed over him for DC in favor of Nolan. Both brothers had found no takers for their services after Buddy got fired, and they had to go back to the college ranks for a couple of years.

Brother Rob, whom Buddy also gave a brief leg up during his failed stint as the Cardinals HC, is doing swimmingly as well as Ratgini's DC following a painful stint in the Black Hole after he got his second shot with BB and didn't advance on that tree...

The Ryans live with a chip as big as their guts on their shoulders born of the belief that their father was the greatest mind in his generation and didn't get his due. They are perpetually frustrated that they don't get theirs, either... which is likely the bond that formed between Rob and Eric during their time here.

It's never their fault, they are perpetually misunderstood geniuses who never learned there is more to defense, let alone being an NFL football HC, than teaching your defensive players to punch all comers in the face. And a lot more went into the four rings the three Ryans have as assistants or the one Buddy got as Ditka's DC than merely their contribution.

There was an intersting article in SI in June about the roots of the Ryan coaching tree:

New Jets coach Rex Ryan, Buddy's son, is doing it Dad's - 06.22.09 - SI Vault

Re: ryan and dungy go back and forth

Lemme see what the hell would Tony Dungy know about coaching that Rex Ryan wouldn't...

Not like Dungy hasn't coached 13 years in the league, won 139 games, been to the playoffs 11 of those 13 years and won a Super Bowl.

Ryan needs to sit down, shut up, and listen to someone who knows what the hell he is talking about and adjust his freaking game plan or else he will be out of the job in a year.
