Bunting: Some love for 5th Rounder OG Bussey

I agree that RG's shouldn't require a top 100 pick.

Well Vollmer was definitely a top 100 pick, and Ohrnberger was also rated in the top 100 by Gosselin. Bussey was a teammate of Eric Wood's and I have a feeling that he was one of those guys that stood out on film while BB was scouting Wood. BB has definitely spent the picks to stock the cupboard at OL this year.

Ohrenberger was rated in the top 100, but was not drafted in the top 100. Belichick had many, many chance to draft a RG before pick 123. He certainly could have drafted a guard at 97, but he waited, knowing that RG's are often drafted lower than their talent rating might indicate.

On Page 3 of PFW's Post-Draft issue, there is a section titled Draft Reaches & Steals. In the OverValued portion is the Hindenburg himself, SeaBass Vollmer. Nolan Nawrocki's quote: "Having enough try-hard, injury-prone stiffs on their line already, the Pats didn't need one with a bad back, too."

I could not have said it any better myself.

This OLine is deteriorating, and has been exposed as lacking the strength & athleticism to sustain blocks while the offense is trying to execute the ego-driven, spread-style, 7-step drops that have pummeled, then IRed, The Franchise the last 2 games he has played. And over-drafting each (by AT LEAST one round) of SeaBass, ShortBurger & Bustey do absolutely NOTHING to improve either the size, strength or athleticism of the OLine.

Ummm . . . last I checked, the hit that took out Brady wasn't a lineman's fault.

Yeah, that's the ticket, it's the new guy's fault.

But seriously, you're right, it was a cheap shot by a blitzing safety, who's usually the responsibility of the RB. But Brady was getting hit already during the first 2 drives, because he was taking 7-step drops, with minimal protection, in a spread formation, without even pretending play-action, as if the coaches learned nothing from the SB. This Run 'n Shoot favored by Bill is a QB-killer, unless he has a Pro Bowl-caliber OLine across the board.

A nice little write up on Bussey on Patriots.com, alot of quotes from his college coach,,

"The Louisville offensive line also included center Eric Wood, who was chosen in the first round by Buffalo. Myers said the Bills plan to move Wood to guard as well, and added that he didn't see much difference between the players during their time with the Cards."

Nice piece, thanks -- here's the link:
Meet the Rookies: George Bussey

Very interesting to read in the OTA reports that Bussey has been lining up at RT in practice rather than guard (and Vollmer at LT rather than RT). Meanwhile the other backup guard options are all OG/C's rather than OG/T's. Lots of possibilities in configuring this o-line roster.

I found that write interesting on two fronts,,

The head coach thinks the two players, Wood and Bussey, have the same ability.

The head coach was enthralled by the Scar coaching clinic,,

This brings up another possibility,, Wasn't Kaczur rated a much higher draft pick a year or two after the draft than where he was selected??, I thought I read he was rated a first rounder,,yea, I'll catch grief for saying that.
Wouldn't be nice if this Bussey turns into a higher round player???????

1) Belichick judged that Wood just wan't worth our 1st round pick, and was long gone at 34.

2) Given the number of free agents, I also would like to see 10 OL's on the 53-man roster. However, we shouldn't exaggerate the situation. Light, Koppen and LeVoir will be coming back for 2010.

3) The issue is that we have zero non-rookie guards or backup centers signed for 2010.

4) While I agree that we need lots of interior linemen, I might prefer to keep an extra veteran instead of Bussey, but Dante can make that determination in camp. We might be best having both Johnson and Hochstein on the 53-man squad, in addition to either Ohrenberger or Bussey.

The head coach thinks the two players, Wood and Bussey, have the same ability.

I'll assume some exaggeration there, since the college coach is puffing up his own players, but even so it was good to hear. (Wood was my pet OL in the draft.)

With a ton of 2010 FAs on the o-line, this is a transitional year. I think carrying 10 OLs including all 3 rookies is a real possibility.
