Who will have the better career: Wheatley or Butler?

I was going to refer to numerology, but scrabble works just fine.

Seriously, they're essentially the same player athletically. I don't really get the whole 1st round talent vs 2nd round reach thing, either. Just because my mortal enemy Wes "I paid a guy 10k to learn what a 5-tech was" Bunting ranks a guy somewhere doesn't mean that's how he is. Just slap the tape on and watch the two. If they switched jerseys, you couldn't tell the difference.

Butler. He's a legitimate 1st round talent who fell to 23, and has the potential to become a legitimate "shut-down" CB. Wheatley will be solid if he remains healthy, but doesn't have Butler's upside.

We selected Butler at #23? I must have missed that draft......

At any rate, on paper, Butler would look to be the better talent, but it remains to be seen who has the better career.... Remember where TB was selected?

The funny thing about "first round talent" is that it varies from year to year. I don't think Butler would have been "first round talent" last season. This season, a down season for corners, he was a 'steal'.

I'll break out my Ouija Board and we can ask the spirits for their thoughts....

An elaborate way of not posting.

I really like both of them but I'm going to say that Wheatley will be starting opposite Bodden sometime this year. I liked what I saw of Wheatley in the Colts game (except for the wrist thing) and I believe he will be successful this year. I haven't seen too much of Butler but what I have seen intrigues me. He has lots of potential. Butler is a good tackler despite his size, has great ball skills, but I am really impressed with his footwork and change of direction skills. In the end, I think both will have very good careers but I have to say Butler will be the better CB. Butler is a future pro bowler.

My guess is as good as the next person's... In other words, I don't know the answer to the question. Still, I give Butler an advantage as a rookie because he can play on special teams.

I don't know if Butler will make most fans forget about Ty Law, but I believe he has the talent to be a mainstay with the Patriots if he works hard, avoids serious injuries over his career and makes the best of his opportunities. Because Butler reads like he has the talent to be one of those players that you try to find a way to get him on the field as often as possible, either on defense or offense. I doubt the Patriots will ever consider him as a receiver. However, I believe he has decoy written all over him. At worst, he can be used in the red zone like Seymour or Vrabel.

I'm afraid I'd have to disagree. I'm going to have to go with Crable...

Either way we are set on DL and secondary. (Depending on how woods/crable/guyton/TBC do) the only talent gap is at LB. I know Bill will do something about that... either through trades or 2010 draft. Hopeful we can do something to fortify the unit this year.

I'll be honest and say I don't know. I like Butler but will admit I was really turned off at his lack of competition and ints during his uconn years. If he would of been picked in the first round I would of been rather mad. I would of much rather traded up for Jenkins but it just wasn't part of BB's plan.

I believe Bodden and Springs will be the best Cb's on the roster thi year and think that Bodden will actually be the gem of our of the free agent signings on the defensive side of the ball. Great, great moves while the young guys get ready.

Perhaps you're missing some info on Wheatley in the return game?

Butler 2008: 20 returns for 471 yds, 23.6 avg

Wheatley 2007: 37 returns for 919 yds, 24.8 avg

Jonathan Wilhite.

Oh, that's not one of the options.

In all seriousness, I believe Jonathan Wilhite could turn out to be a star. I went back, and watched tape of the last four games of the season. The man is good, especially man-to-man. He is a lot more physical at the line of scrimmage than you'd think.

Mark my words, Wilhite will start at some point this season.

I also obviously have high hopes for Darius Butler (and Wheatley to an extent). But of the two, I'd say Butler will have a better career.
