A 5th according to Reiss....if he can contribute even a little, a good trade, imo.

I was just about to post this, you beat me to it!!

Fair Dinkum, that.

Wow, only a fifth? Smith's story sounds exactly the same as Welker's and Moss' before they came here.

A fifth for a player whose contract expires after 2009.

Excellent news.............

Nice trade. He is probably a better player than we could hope to get with a 5th. Should provide some nice depth at TE. Smith is a solid receiver. I'd assume he is also a good blocker or Belichick wouldn't have traded for him.

But one who was a former 3rd rounder who produced in his rookie season before the QB carousel spun into overdrive in Tampa and who will be a RFA if there is not a new CBA in 2010. Besides which a 5th next year is worth a 6th this year post draft...

For Tampa, they're saying what most of you probably were about getting rid of Hobbs. They know Smith, and he hasn't been THAT good for them, and he's a FA. This is their way of getting something from nothing.

For the Patriots, we see a guy who has produced in this league before, he has never had a QB the likes of Brady throwing to him, etc. It looks good for both sides, probably like the Eagles trade.

he is much better then most of the late round picks the Pats have been taking recently

So based on the pick ... Ellis Hobbs could cover him with one hand tied behind his back?

Good deal for the Patriots, me thinks.

Smith's strength is supposed to be his blocking. He hasn't done anything to suggest that he would be more than an average catching tight end.

With Smith and Baker now blocking and the addition of Fred Taylor, our running game will be one of the best in the league, especially if Maroney FINALLY has a breakout season.

Bucs fan here. I like Smith. I think he is a solid tight end and can be good if used right. Unfortunately, we really don't have much of an use for him because we have Gilmore, Winslow, and Stevens. I wish him the best of luck in New England. Glad to see we got something for him.

thanks for the input. we appreciate it as fellow fans of the sport.
and good luck with the Bucs.

This is a Steal Daniel Graham pt. 2

BB's insatiable lust for fresh TE flesh continues unabated

Same as Watson about a catch or two a year difference.

A 5th rounder for Smith sounds about right..... The Bucs get a pick for a guy they would have lost next year and the Pats get a pretty good blocking TE that is rangy, if not fast, for a low pick....

It's an OK deal for both sides...

With all due respect, may I beat on this statement a little?

#1. TB offense is not the NE offense
#2. BB's designs for AS are not clear, if he if's backup/special teamer, forget stats.
#3. Watson is a soft as butter as a player (in the wrong ways), a YPC or RPG isn't going to get you very far in comparing them - IMO.
