re: Carucci: Peppers close to going to NE for #34 (merged 3x)

my question is why would they wait til after the coaches meeting?

re: Carucci: Peppers close to going to NE for #34 (merged 3x)

the pats can do whatever they want, except actually make the player step on the field.........wilfork has principle and a backbone, the pats won't force anything on him

if this is the case then, the the acquisition to get peppers will only aid in destroying this team........

The goal shouldn't be to franchise Wilfork. The goal should be to use the leverage of a franchise tag to reduce his compensation demands to a level where New England can keep him.

But a lot of NFL players have back bone, and they still sign their franchise deals.

The going price seems to be: I get to hold out of training camp and an agreement not to Franchise me again. You get one year of service at the discount rate and some bad press.

If things completely break down with Wilfork and the can't trade him Branch-style, then he is either giving us another year or sitting on his ass for two seasons worth of prime earning potential.

re: Carucci: Peppers close to going to NE for #34 (merged 3x)

This is where everything gets complicated....

1. Assuming the last need for the Pats is OLB and they acquired Pepper's for the 34th pick, than why do they need their 23rd pick?

A bird in the hand is worth two Linebackers in the bush.

re: Carucci: Peppers close to going to NE for #34 (merged 3x)

Let's roll back the Cassel posts.

The best thing moneywise for Peppers is for him to sign the tag and accept the $17.25M. Carolina can send him anywhere that will pay that kind of money for one year. There will be no takers. Carolina would be stuck with Peppers at $17.25M. Apparently, Peppers hasn't signed leaving the way open for 3-way discussions between Carolina, Peppers and some new team regarding a new deal. It is Peppers who want to move to the 3-4. The question is how much is he insisting that he get paid.

Bidding up the price is this month's joke. There is exactly no team who will give Carolina as much as a second for Peppers for a one-year deal for $17.25M. If Carolina wants a 2nd, then Peppers can determine who he will be traded to.

Cassel gave up his rights. He took the money. Peppers could sign and do that also, but he isn't worth the #34 for one year for $17M. Cassel wasn't either but that is another story.

If he wants to get pissed off about a franchise tag, there is nothing we can do.

But he is going to have to deal with New England, and we are likely to insist on at least one season under the franchise tag before we let him off the hook.

Even if he didn't care about playing in New England, he would still be better off signing long term here if our number is anywhere close to what he thinks he can get.

re: Carucci: Peppers close to going to NE for #34 (merged 3x)

2. Taylor being a free agent is an option and might be cheaper. Allows the Pats to trade some picks and beats having to deal with the Panthers organization and Pepper's agent. Just gotta deal with Taylor's agent and it is a done deal. Doesn't seem like there is much of a market for him anyways.

Taylor is for one season only. A long term deal with Peppers could be long term.

the sight of this 21 page thread could potentially be painful to look at tomorrow....just sayin:singing:

re: Carucci: Peppers close to going to NE for #34 (merged 3x)

I read somewhere that KC hasn't even reached the cap minimum yet.

Therefore, it seems logical that Jarvis Green could wind up in KC. Obviously, money would not be an issue.

Before K.C. signed Cassel, they had 57 million dollars of cap room.

re: Carucci: Peppers close to going to NE for #34 (merged 3x)

Why on earth would you want to cut Faulk?

I wouldnt like to have Faulk released but his ~3M cap savings potential gives the 0.00000000000000000001% chance that he may become a cap casualty to fit Peppers in.

re: Carucci: Peppers close to going to NE for #34 (merged 3x)

If I am correct Logan Mankins is also a free agent next year, and is probably looking for a long term deal. He won't be as costly as Wilfork, but his value to the o-line is just as important IMO.

As much as I would love Peppers I just don't want to see all that money tied up, and not have enough for Wilfork and Logan in 2010.

We'll draft 1 or 2 OT's

re: Carucci: Peppers close to going to NE for #34 (merged 3x)

my question is why would they wait til after the coaches meeting?

It's not about waiting until after, it's that it's going to take at least that long to hash out the details:

1) Pats need to figure out what kind of contract Peppers would sign.

2) They need to figure out what moves/restructures they need to make that number fit their cap.

Neither of those things are going to be taken lightly, and both will take a while to complete.

re: Carucci: Peppers close to going to NE for #34 (merged 3x)

Since the work probably started at least a month ago, why would the work take awhile to complete?

Or do you believe that the idea of trading for Peppers hasn't considered by Belichick until today?

Lets also take a look at the flexibility this going to let the Pats have on Defense.. we will be able to utilize a front 6 and stuff the run as well as 5 def backs for better pass defense.. think about all the attention they are going to have to pay to the right side of that line..

Re: NFL network : Peppers close to going to NE for #34 !

Blast your hot pics ! Must focus on Peppers... must ignore hot babes.

But yes, I agree, the D could be making major moves towards... something, something hot pics...

What was that? :D

re: Carucci: Peppers close to going to NE for #34 (merged 3x)

This would be incredible if true, but I'm a little skeptical about the report.

1.) Vic has no idea when it's going to happen. Between the 22-25 and the draft? So basically all he reveals is it won't happen this week because once this week is over, I could give you the same owners meetings and draft timeline without any source telling me that.

2.) We don't have the cap space. This might not be a big deal since there are ways to create it, but it definitely complicates things more.

3.) Why wouldn't the Panthers want the 23rd pick? It's not like a top 5 pick where you are paying out of the ass and if they deal Peppers, they free up over $16M and no longer have huge cap problems like they currently do. I could see preferring the 2nd right now when they are strapped up against the cap, but why would they do that when they have tons of room?

4.) Since when does Belichick allow his off-season plan and deals he's trying to complete to be leaked out to the media so far in advance?

On the optimistic side, this is a pretty good source usually. You don't see BS rumors/articles posted on NFL.com/Carucci and if they are posting it, they really believe it and generally have good sources.

Carolina needs to make a deal soon.

Oh no, I'm sure it's been considered long before now. But that doesn't mean the potential deal was in place with Carolina definitively. Or perhaps they wanted to wait and see what price they would have to pay for all the other FAs they brought in.

I'm sure the idea has been speculated since the offseason began, but the logistics change on a daily basis. Now that the basic framework for the deal is in place, you're dealing with more concrete factors and can really make a serious decision on what you are willing to do to fit him in. Those decisions are still contingent on what Peppers wants, and thus won't be made until they're certain they know how much he'll cost.

re: Carucci: Peppers close to going to NE for #34 (merged 3x)

Carucci is a (local to me Buffalo) guy who rarely, ever tosses about unsubstantiated rumours.

It makes total sense for the Pats to want Peppers (Vrabs' open spot is still there for the taking) and for Peppers to want the Pats. If you are Peppers, BB is the one man you want converting you from DE to OLB and the Pats are one team you want to play for in that search for a ring!

The fact that the Pats have surplus draft picks to play with this this April just makes it all the more likely to happen.
