Not at all... though the situation is different than what BB did, it is high risk. He basically handed the Chargers a tie game. Had he taken the safety he would have made them go 40+ yards for a winning FG.

Yes it would. The Pats were already down 1 I believe so an extra 2 points wouldn't matter. If the Colts gave the Chargers 2 points a FG from SD would WIN them the game. HUGE difference.

Kaeding makes it. Blessing in disguise, IMO, as I had this feeling that the Chargers would misplay it with the clock winding down (see: Jaguars and Garrard's horrible clock management a few weeks back against the Colts).

Nice way to basically repeat what I was saying, and ignore my point. My point is that is if Dungy had taken the safety a defensive stop before the Chargers got 30-40 yards and he wins, instead of going to OT. It is absolutely higbrisk but may have a higher chance of winning. Although SD mismanaged it and gave the Colts time so that changes it a little.

The spike to stop the clock on 1st down is a fossil leftover from an earlier era in the NFL when teams weren't all capable of running a hurry-up offense. At this point, there isn't any reason for teams to not have a prescribed 1st-down play schemed into their 2-minute offense each week.
