It's easy, and only takes a few moments.I am hoping this response is simply frustration after losing a close game.Frustrating that at times he tries to put himself and his decisions to look smart because the decision is "out of the box" and against the percentages above the team.
That OT decision to take the ball out of the hands of a HOF QB who would have loved nothing more than to lead his team down to a game winning FG against his hated rivals and has done it on so many occasions is beyond any kind of explanation.
to eachLet me be clear, I consider Belichick to be the best coach in the game by a long margin just like everyone else, however, some of his decision making make no sense to me. One of the primary reasons why I like Belichick is because he thinks analytically (myself being a mathematician).
He looks at all possible outcomes and selects the best possible one for the team at that moment. However, there are some decisions that he makes which to me makes no sense at all. I believe there are better options available at those situation.
- What was the point of wasting a timeout at the end of regulation time, when the clock was already stopped.
- Why did he go for a blocked punt formation and not keep a punt returner? It's hard to block a punt when the blockers already know it. With a good return and a timeout we could have atleast tried a 50 yard FG with the best kicker in the game.
- Why did he chose to kick the ball in OT? His answer is "It's best for the team". WTF does that mean? It clearly isn't. The Pats couldn't stop the Jets for most of the game and he suddenly realized he could stop them? You get the ball and try to score. The defense then knows what it needs to do.
- Why was there no urgency at the end of the half when we had over a minute left? I understand that we were banged up, but with this banged up team we wouldn't have scored at the start of the 2nd half either. What's the point of playing if you are not confident in your team. Just take out Brady, Gronk and all the starters and put in the 2nd stringers.
I find it irritating that Bill never (or atleast I've never heard him say) says "I made a mistake with that call". It's always "What's best for the team", when clearly it's not the case in some situations. I'm no coach and I'm criticizing a 6 time SB champion coach, but just because he has won 6 superbowls doesn't mean that every decision he makes is the right one.

The point is not the number of yards, plus or minus. The point is to guarantee NE having at least ONE opportunity to score....and NE chose the one option that relinquished that guarantee. It doesn't work that way. You also have to factor in that you won't need 80 yards to win the game anymore. You are looking at an advantage of (if you say you need to get to the Jets 35 for a FG) 47 yards in you scenario.
The opportunity to score isn't the crux of electing to receive though. It's the opportunity to end the game via scoring a touchdown. If you don't think you can drive 80 yards and score the touchdown it becomes a toss-up since even if you manage a FG you are in the same situation as if you chose to kick away - a FG giving you the opportunity to win the game with a FG or losing the game by allowing a TD. And then it becomes a field position question. The point is not the number of yards, plus or minus. The point is to guarantee NE having at least ONE opportunity to score....and NE chose the one option that relinquished that guarantee.
Point #1 is irrelevant anyway.......BB feared his special team's ability to field the punt.....and their half ass attempt to attack the punt itself tells me BB just wanted a mistake free play to get to OT.Most of your rebuttal boils down to a fan's preferences, which is fine. I offered BB's rationales as I saw them and found them pretty sound. Where you're dead wrong is point No. 1. Calling a time out to make sure you've got things right in a critical situation is just good coaching, nothing to do with being "disorganized."
Considering the personnel situation, pretty sound reasoning on BB's behalf, wouldn't you say?I have since refined my personal belief which can be summed up:
BB doesn't trust his offense
BB doesn't trust his punt returners
You know, just because YOU don't get why he does what he does doesn't make it necessarily 'Chuck Pagano like' or even wrong.I never questioned the fact the Bill is the best coach out there. What baffles me is that how can he make Chuck Pagano like decisions sometimes when the game is on the line. That is not what is expected from the best coach in the NFL. If Bill goes by the mantra "What's best for the team in that situation", then I'm sorry, there are certainly better options in those situations which he missed.
Miami sure looked like a team that's packed it in today. This team left everything until the final day. I hope they don't get burned in miami. Miami sucks but you let them hang around and anything can happen. The refs can screwed u.
So, because Bill isn't a sheep and follows what every other horrible coach in the NFL does slavishly, he's an idiot? So you're saying that you weren't surprised and that you were happy that BB decided to kickoff? I'm curious to see how often in NFL history that given somewhat normal weather conditions that any team decided to make this decision to start an OT. I am very curious. I would be shocked if it's over 4%. Esp a team that rostered a legendary, HOF QB.

Deferring in OT -- after calming down and thinking about it, I kind of get it. Bill plays percentages and took into account what he saw from this team all game. The D was having a decent outing, the o line was disastrous, receivers having a hard time getting open ect. Say we receive the to start OT, we get the ball at the 20, the Jets dial up a couple blitzes, blow through that shamble of an o line and we lose yardage and have to punt from let's say the 10. Your giving the Jets good feild position at that point to win on a go ahead feild goal. He took the bet on our D stopping them and us being the ones granted better field position. Do I agree with what he did? Meh, I didnt like it, but is it the worst call in the history of his coaching tenure. Absolute not.
Both double B's cost us the game today.
We best beat Miami

Horrible call by Belichick. The only reason to ever kick off in OT is severe weather conditions, which there weren't today. You have Tom Brady who just led the team down the field for a TD you give him the ball again.
With that being said, to answer the questions why does Belichick get a pass is because he is one of the top 3 coaches in league history and has earned the right to make an oddball call once in a blue moon. Thank God he rarely makes bad mistakes so we should be good until sometime in 2017 or beyond. Win next week and we will all forget about this fairly quickly. This also gives Rex Ryan the chance to knock the Jets out of the playoffs which would be a nice kick to the groin for Jets fans.
And the Pats would have if the defense didn't melt down.
I only ask for one for word in response. Which NFL coach would you prefer to Bill Belichick in today's game against the 9-5 Jets on the road?
100% right. The offense wasn't moving the ball with ease, the defense played a great 2nd half. Stop them, get the FG and go home. BB took a risk (or at the very least had Slater's back) and i'm fine with that.
