Also want to add that ironically, Julian Edelman is the best slot receiver out of Welker, Amendola, and Edelman, and it isn't even close. I would hardly say that Belichick "won" the deal by passing on Welker and instead throwing a ton of money at Amendola. It is also hard to say that the Broncos "lost" after fielding the highest scoring offense in NFL history and signing Welker to a relatively inexpensive deal. All in all, it seems that both teams overlooked Edelman, when in fact he is the best of three players. The Patriots merely got very lucky that their "backup slot receiver" made some huge strides last year and doesn't appear to be slowing down. They certainly didn't do much to retain him and could have lost him to the open market, but many teams were scared off by his injury and his "system receiver" status. I think it is clear that while Edelman is best in the Pats system, he is still a really good player and not easy to replace.
