Two writers - Mike Klis of the Denver Post and Yahoo's Michael Silver - think the Patriots are gaining an unfair competitive advantage by being able to add Josh McDaniels to their coaching staff for the post-season.

The Denver writer in particular wastes no time letting his feelings become known.

Broncos, playoff teams should officially protest Josh McDaniels hire in New England | First-and-Orange

His opening sentence:
Once again, Bill Belichick has figured out a way to cheat the system. And once again, he caught the NFL standing there sucking their collective thumbs.

And he closes with this:
There may be no rule against McDaniels working immediately for the Pats. But this clearly violates the spirit of fair competition. It’s so Belichick. It’s so McDaniels, for that matter.

All the Pats have to do is hire away Steve Scarnecchia from Syracuse and the whole cheating gang gets back together.

Come on, Mr. Goodell. Exercise those commissioner power and put a stop to this.

Perhaps he has a point, but I find it impossible to even consider his opinion when he trots out the tired old 'cheaters' crap.

Here's Silver's article; it's at the very end of the column. He too brings up the cheating angle. Apparently the move would be okay if another coach did it, but it's not okay because it's Belichick. Broncos given no choice but to embrace Tebow - NFL - Yahoo! Sports

The league should be especially concerned about this potential competitive edge given that both Belichick and McDaniels have been linked to cheating scandals in the past five years – if nothing else, it’s a very bad look. I also object to this move out of principle.

If this was any other team in the league who hired McDaniels, these *****N A******* writers would have nothing to say. F them. BB did not "VIOLATE ANY RULES" by hiring McDaniels. Sour Grapes, IMHO.

And there is no rule being violated if McDaniels starts working during the playoffs. The league has already said so.

Really? Bringing "cheating" into this? Wow, I didn't know they had 12 year olds writing for major publications.

I voted yes, but a more accurate statement would be "who cares?" I can see why it would be an issue to sign players, but coaches? Really?

Boo-hoo the Patriots have got back the OC that gave the league the best offense in league history wah wah it's not fair

As Silver pointed out in the same article, Haley could have been hired in a similar situation, so what's the problem? They write as if it's a hire for just one game. Plus Silver admits a personal disdain for Josh. Not man enough to concede that 2 guys Josh was vilified for drafting won a playoff game against last season's AFC Champions.

A big GFY to the authors.

There's nothing in the rules about it being not allowed, so it's legal.

Wonder if the Broncos had done this, would he be complaining about it ? I don't think so.

I don't think that it'll give a big advantage, that Offense has changed a whole lot since McDaniels was there.

Everything the Patriots did was on the up and up with regards to McDaniels. This article just falls under the umbrella of a hack sports writer trying to come up with controversy to stir up attention.

They act as if we couldn't win without the help from McDaniels.... its was only what, 3-4 weeks ago we played them?

Geez people. Have to find some way to always make the Pats look bad. Everybody is already rooting for Teebow and his awesome story.

LMAO they are acting like the pats picked up Demarcus Ware for a 7th round pick after the trade dead line, it's Josh McDaniels he knows Notting about denvers new offense and defense,

hell the pats are even runing a new type of offense with there 2 TE spred the ball offense

True, so don't click the links.

btw, if the Steelers won, as was widely anticipated, would this be an issue?

Whatever...if Pittsburgh or the Bengals had won, it would be a non-story..And I seriously doubt BB thought Denver would win, IMO!

It's another fallacy to continue with this crap about coaches winning games. The coach's job is to get the players ready to go win the games. A coach can't do much if players don't block, tackle, throw or catch well on a given day.

McDaniel's presence will have minimal impact on the outcome of this game. Given the opportunity to bring in a good coach immediately, the obvious choice was - sure why not. Didn't break any rules.

So the Pats are now cheating because they followed the rules 100% by the letter of the rule book? LOL!

The league shouldn't allow this because the Pats took advantage of the rules that are in the rulebook or at least there is no rule to say otherwise just because both Belichick and McDaniels have been linked to cheating scandals?

Just some small-time journalists trying to make names for themselves by stirring up controversy where none exists (poorly written articles, too). They know how this works: if there were a rule against it, then it would be against the rules. Since there is no rule against it, it's not against the rules.

There's not even a controversy.

So, do these writers actually think that if BB hadn't hired McDaniels before the playoffs, that he wouldn't have CALLED his former assistant to get some tips and such on the Broncos (or whoever they end up facing)? I guarantee you, coaches who used to work together talk all the time and share info about upcoming opponents (assuming they're out of it). Having him there is just a more formal way of doing it.

In all fairness this is no different than the article Silver wrote chastising Rex Ryan and the league for the jets consulting Rob Ryan for their play-off defense last year.

Oh wait, he never wrote an article about that...............

On the Steelers board they were already crying about this in anticipation of playing the pats. They said cuz McDaniels recently played against the Steelers (even thou the pats played them earlier) it would be an unfair advantage.

If you think it's unfair, get the Ommissioner to change the rules. I'm fine with that, as long as it's not a Polian situation where you think it's 'unfair' because it's stopping you, and not because of any real reason. The moment you bring in "cheating" as a Broncos writer, you piss away all your credibility, because the Broncos are the #1 cheating team in NFL history.

As for Silver, who really cares? His argument is "well, it's legal, but it looks bad and it might give the Patriots an edge". Well, if there's an edge to be had, teams could have signed Mangini for the playoffs.

It's unfortunate that in this day and age whenever an entity is good at something competitive the rest of the world just looks for ways to drag them down instead of giving them props.
