Suppose they realise they need to protect whoever is taking the snap!

Could be quite a clever move, but adds to the list of players who will be out of contact next season!

The guy is done. He has played in only 4 games in 2 years because of his health. If healthy he is good, but he cannot stay on the field. Jets are desperate for anything better than Hunter. I should give them my grandmas number she would fit that description.

For the Jests though as long as they didn't give up a high round (which I can't imagine they would) it's not a bad move hoping the guy can stay on the field.

Will be interesting to see what pick was traded. I'm a little surprised that the recurring knee injury that's sidelined him for over half of his career so far didn't scare the Jets off, but maybe they're optimistic that he is (and can stay) finally healthy. Given that the Ducasse pick was a whiff, they have to find talent somewhere, and at this point anything that they can come up with is going to have baggage. His is that he can't get healthy.

From what I've read about this guy's career, I'd be shocked if the Jets gave up anything better than a sixth rounder.

This post seems to basically sum it up:

Jeff Otah traded to the Jets - Carolina Panthers - Carolina Huddle - Page 4

Apparently Otah's just lazy and can't be bothered to stay in shape/properly rehab? Sounds like he'll fit right in with the Jets.

Seems like a decent low risk/high reward trade for a team with serious problems at the position. Let's hope it's more like a Haynesworth than a Mark Anderson.

if Otah hadn't basically missed the last two years and had conditioning concerns before that, I might be a little more scared. I wonder if the guy has anything to offer at this point.

BTW, Landry is starting camp on the PUP. The Jets like to gamble on these injured guys.

Looks like the foot-man is getting a little nervous about "The Condor", I don't blame him, he should be.

They don't have the assets or cap space to get anyone else, so instead they're just gambling on players with ongoing/chronic injuries hoping they'll magically heal themselves.

LaCanfora reports that the deal is essentially a 3 team swap with Raider WR Louis Murphy going to Panthers for the pick they got from the Jets. That's one shrewd deal. Getting a guy with speed and size for a dude who's been a non-factor for 2 years. Murphy may not be a star but he's talented. I would have been pleased if the Pats sent a 7th rounder to the Raiders for him. He's a former track star in sprinting and has always averaged around 15yds/catch or better. At 6'2"/214 Murphy would have been a real threat to make the team as he also plays some special teams. The Jets got tooled by Carolina who dumped a major problem on the Jets and in turn got back a guy who has a real chance to excel with a stud like Newton chucking the ball.

The Jets finally admitted they have a problem at tackle and that neither Hunter nor Ducasse will fix it. If Otah is healthy that will help them, but I think this is likely a rather desperate grasping at straws

They still have a problem at Guard though, even if Otah comes through.

I am not that excited about this guy after hearing about his weight and lack of ,,,eye of the tigerish type of thing. But I think it is a shrewd low cost gamble on a former first round tackle with tons of upside, not a desperate or grasping at straws type of move at all. This move like Landyry could pay off big or cost just a few million dollars, LOL.

Scouting reports have her with great footwork, but her time in the 40 is abysmal.

For the price that the Jets paid (7th rounder), it's not a bad deal. Production-wise, if he sucks they can cut him at next to no cost, and as far as him being a potentially negative locker room guy, they already have enough of those that one more is unlikely to make much of a difference.

I too would have liked seeing the Pats get Murphy for a 7th. I wonder why the Raiders were willing to part with him at that price.

Jacoby Ford, Darius Heyward-Bey and Denarius Moore would have all been a head of him on the depth chart. That's without mentioning the 800 other (6 rookie receivers) receivers they have on their roster.

Good on the Panthers. They needed help as they've got nobody after Steve Smith in Carolina. Murphy should be a nice compliment.

Certainly they could pay off huge. Personally, I don't think Otah will pan out because missing basically two seasons in a row is usually the death sentence to a player's career especially when it is because of the same knee.

Landry could pay off more, but the fact that he decided to go the holistic route to repair his torn Achilles would scare me though.

I think the whole Jets roster continues to pay for the way they pissed away the incredibly talented 2010 draft. (Only 4 total picks, and the likes of Vlad Ducasse among them.)

    Random factoid:

Total number of games started for the Jets by their 2010 draftees: 22

Total number of games started for the Patriots by their 2010 draftees: 111

To be fair if the Pats has made this trade, we'd be looking at it as an underwhelming but shrewd high upside and low risk shot in the dark. This was a good trade for the Jets. For a lot of reasons that have already been stated, it might not work out, but for a 7th round pick and around a $1MM at worst the Jets have added an OT who has at least started some games in the NFL

The only things that are dumb about this trade are Jet fans, who unlike Gunny are looking on this as a HUGE upgrade in their OL situation. They think that health is the ONLY reason the Panthers thought a former UDFA was a better fit than a former 1st rounder. " Stud, beast, and among the best OT's in the league.....when healthy" are just some of the characterizations they use to describe this "genius" move by Tanny.

    Just as a reminder:

    2010 JEST draft:

    1 Kyle Wilson CB
    2 Vladimir Ducasse OT
    4 Joe McKnight RB
    5 John Conner FB

If I were Pats GM, and the JEST offered those four straight up for Zoltan Mesko, I'd have to think long and hard . . . and then ROTFLMAO. :)
