Alright, let me get this out of the way. I have a healthy respect for TN and Coach Fisher. My father lives in TN and we have kept track of each other's teams for the past 5-7 years. They are a tough team and I have even gone as far as adopting them as my team of choice once NE is out of the running.
That said, they were a dispicable bunch of bastards on Sunday. It was clear from the get-go that their entire game plan was based on eliminating as many NE players from the game as possible. The block of Rodney was legal, but certainly contained malicious intent, especially considering the fact that one of his knees was surgically repaired just a year ago. The head hunting (or knee hunting, as it were) continued on an even worse, yet thankfully less discussed dive by Kyle Vanden Bosch into Brady's knees. Brady, and all of us, should be thanking out lucky stars that Brady's foot didn't get stuck in the muddy track and Vanden Bosch just harmlessly slipped off. Just a truly disgusting act. Of course the nadir of humanity himself, Mawae got into the act with his cheap shot on Warren (?).
Oh well. On to the random thoughts.
* How Harrison keeps getting voted the dirtiest player in the league when a bastitch like Mawae is running around is beyond me. For those that don't remember, Mawae was directly invovled on Ted Washington's broken leg in 2003 and Seymour's MCL sprain in 2004. Harrison may give a little extra shove to let know know that he is there, but he doesn't bend a guy's leg until it snaps or roll a few extra times to ensure that an engaged guy's knee bends the wrong way. What an unbelievable scumbag that guy is.
* Count me among those surprised that NE played the guys as long as they did. I have a funny feeling that NE may have played some guys a little longer than originally thought to stick it to TN after they started with their questionable tactics.
* Vince Young is hard guy to tackle. I still stand by my post before the game that he is as of right now the best running QB in the game. He is goiing to have to work on his accuracy, though. There is now way that any of his WRs will ever play a full season if he keeps throwing 4-5 balls ta game that force the WR to leap up unprotected like that. In fairness to VY, my father did tell me that Sunday was his worst accurate game so far.
* My dad thinks that TN needs some receivers, but I am not so sure. If they don't lose Bennett I think they can be a decent group, particularly with Young's scrambling ability. I think that they need defensive help. IMHO they really don't have a whole lot beyond Vanden Bosch, Bullock and Pac Man. Haynesworth can be good, but he isn't consistent enough.
* Watching the Denver and Indy games simultaneously was a little interesting. I wanted the Jets, and one of the horsies had to lose, but since both were playing close games it was possible that both lost, which I didn't want. So with every anti-horsie play I both cheered and fretted. It all worked out for the best, though.
* Indy got the worst possible matchup in the first round, except maybe Jacksonville. KC will rush for at least 150 yards, but I'm not sure if they will be able to stop Indy's offense. If they had a better coach I would take KC, but I can't side with the Herminator.
Now it is onto the Jets. I still maintain that the game in Nov was NE's worst game since the beginning of 2003. The Jets won the battle on both lines handily (and still allowed 143 yards rushing, BTW) and NE played far too conservatively with their CBs. Even on the final drive the Jets got a first down with Crotchery on a 3rd and 5 using a simple swing pass because the CB was 7-8 yards off of him. I can't see NE getting beat so soundly on the DL again, particularly with Warren back and Seymour and Wright playing so well right now. Frankly, even if Wilfork doesn't play, I will be very surprised if the Jets run for more than 70 yards unless they get a fluke 50 yarder. Even then they won't go over 100.
Harrison's injury upsets me because he was the key to playing the CBs up on the WRs. Pennington cannot throw a deep pass well at all and NE just gave yards away last time. Coles and Crotchery will still make a few plays, but I do think that Sanders' improved play will allow NE to be more aggressive than before and NE will get a pick or two out of it.
The Jets absolutely suck at stopping the run. Their blitz happy strategy has now been experienced and NE will have more success passing the ball. I don't see how the Jets go over 13 points and I don't see how the Jets can stop NE from getting at least 20. I do think that the game will be close for 3 quarters or so, but then NE will assert their dominance and put the game away 24-13.
