They are top-heavy right now with Wilkerson, Ferguson and Darrelle Revis accounting for $46.8 million, about 30 percent of the team’s cap room.

Waiting for bombshell move that will unclog Jets' cap mess
It says that 30% of the Jets cap is tied up in three players (Mevis, The Brick and Wilkerson) which isn't that unusual for the NFL, five teams have more than 30% tied up in their top three players, but:
But there's a difference between those five teams and the Jets, and it's quite significant: Each one has a quarterback in its top three and the Jets don't. Right now, they're spending a league-low $2.3 million at the quarterback position, according to ESPN Stats & Information.
So to recap: The Jets are spending with the big boys, but none of the big checks are going to a quarterback. They're paying two players on the decline, Revis and Ferguson. Wilkerson is an ascending player, but he can't get a long-term contract. Does this make any sense? Of course it doesn't.
And that's the difference between the Jets and the Pats. We get rid of players a year early (Mankins, Jones, etc) and effectively back-fill with trades and day-three-and-later free agents, they keep them a year too long.
The Jets are screwed. They don't have a viable quarterback, and Wilkerson's franchise tag is killing their cap so they don't have the money to sign one. They could cut The Brick, but they don't have anyone who can step in for him. They can't cut Revis, his money is guaranteed. Bottom line is Wilkerson is the most likely cut, but as the article points out, he's the only young player on the rise out of the three most expensive ones on the roster.
Seems in retrospect Maccagnon should have not signed Revis and instead he should have locked up Wilkerson a year early rather than trying to get it done when Wilkerson had all the leverage. The Brick should have been traded a year ago ala Mankins rather than let him eat up that much cap space. That would have freed up enough money to find some up and coming free agents at LT and CB.
The real issue for the Jets is the middle and bottom of their roster sucks, so there's no one who can move up and take on some of the gaps that are going to happen when they fix their cap problems. Oh, and they don't have a starting QB, other than Gee No the Elephant Man.
They're screwed!
