Hannah Storm on ESPN Today Claims Patriots Filmed Rams SB Practice

There is literally zero evidence that they filmed any Super Bowl practices... That whole thing was because Tomase came out with that false story right before the SB to get his name out there and the Globe had to retract the story and issue an apology for it.

The people who keep repeating it and using it as if it really happened should be sued heavily for continuing to perpetuate a complete falsehood.

Herald, not Globe. And the apology was front page/cover news when they made it. It was a major apology.

Really? I can't paraphrase something that was a network TV catchphrase in the 1970's and has been quoted about a million times since then? And Donald Trump says we're getting too PC. ..boy is he out of touch!

Saturday Night Live's "You ignorant slut" did not really endure in the public consciousness. I've tried to use it, and realized people didn't get the reference -- which naturally led to them taking offense.

There are indeed two parts to her rant

Part 1: The Patriots history includes the taping of other teams practices
Part 2: Some people consider that to be cheating

Part 1 is blatantly false and she knows it. The "some people" qualification in part 2 has NOTHING to do with part 1.

Is this really that hard?
Apparently, for him, it is.

Granted it wouldn't be appropriate in most social situations but if it ever applied in the SNL context this instance would certainly be the case. Jane Curtin had more journalistic credibility on Weekend Update than Hannah Storm has on ESPN!

It's not appropriate, PERIOD, unless your audience recognizes the reference (or should be expected to). And unfortunately, that is not likely to be the case. Therefore I've stopped using it except to people who I'm sure will get the reference, and you should make the same choice.

Yes, because we all know he's never spent a dime down there.
We also clearly know that he picked the boys club over his QB originally. And, until he actually does something publicly against Goodell, I don't believe a word he said in his apology.

Mr. Kraft, if you REALLY DO give a care about your fans and the franchise, SUE ESPN for crying out loud!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyone know if they still have an ombudsman?

This has seriously reached the point where ESPN needs to publicly apologize for the poor quality of their so-called "journalism" that has so misrepresented the Patriots and helped turn urban legend into modern day fact in the minds of many, thanks to the inability of ESPN to get it's facts straight

I'm inclined to be harder on Kraft NOW than I was before

Before I do realize that there were limited legal options and I actually do believe he thought giving the other owners some blood in the form of a first round pick was something that might appease some of the Hater owners but have Goodell do what he should have in the first place and just exonerate Brady

My hope is that there's some talk going on behind the scenes at the owners meetings about how to jettison Goodell in the near future without making a huge deal about it. It's questionable whether now is the right time for Kraft to publicly go ballistic on Roger.

But at some point he needs to. Goodell is a joke and if Kraft fails to get him fired he might as well just publicly rip into the guy and this investigation.

There's sometimes reasons for silence but at SOME POINT Kraft should have a LOT to say

If he doesn't then he just won't be putting his money where is mouth is

How to figure that she "knows" that Part 1 is false?? 9/10 people that follow the NFL heard the report about the taped walkthrough and never heard the very lightly reported retraction. I have little doubt Hannah Storm is within that 90%.

Yes, but in her case, as a journalist she is obligated professionally to investigate the truth and speak of her own mind.

To answer my own question, if I'm not mistaken ESPN's ombudsman quit in December and has never been replaced http://espn.go.com/blog/ombudsman

And you guys can tell me if I'm wrong but on my browser I couldn't get the "If you have a Question or Concern About the Quality of our Reporting" form to work

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/columns/story?id=2826900

I kid you not. It's like ESPN saw this coming... "get rid of the Ombudsman and roll over for Goodell - and oh, disable that Feedback/Ombudsman page... Things might get a little hairy soon"

This final post from the ombudsman is actually quite prophetic

ESPN is an empire.

And as I’ve roamed its city-states, duchies and colonies for the past 18 months, literally and figuratively, I’ve been constantly impressed by its size, reach and impact on games, athletes and the audience. ESPN’s coverage, for example, of the NFL’s head trauma crisis and of the Ray Rice domestic abuse case helped widen and deepen national conversations that went far beyond the world of sports.

However, as ESPN’s fifth ombudsman in his final inning, I wasn’t hired to polish this shield. I was hired, as they said, to enhance transparency and make constructive criticism. So here goes.

I think that improvement is most needed in ESPN’s inconsistent execution of journalism, which does not appear to be the highest of company priorities.

Yes, but in her case, as a journalist she is obligated professionally to investigate the truth and speak of her own mind.

She's babbling on an entertainment program, not exposing Standard Oil or rendezvous-ing with Deep Throat. Your reference to a "journalist...investigating the truth" shows a profound misunderstanding of modern media in general and ESPN's "news" operation in particular. Ida Tarbell is not walking through that door in Bristol any time soon.

dont call me a liar...you dont want to call it cheating, fine..i dont think it was either. however, NFL considered it cheating, otherwise they wouldnt have been fined. and unfortunately thats the reality we live in...do you disagree with that? i think the taping stuff was crap and we shouldnt have been fined...

this whole conversation is a conversation about whether ESPN defamed the patriots...so if you actually read anything other than the snippets you are quoting you would know that.

in the sense of defamation, any lawyer can make a logical argument that her statement was 2 parts. and the 2nd part was independent of the first and she did not say the patriots cheated by taping practices (more specifically the rams before super bowl), but they cheated by video taping a game..based on my first paragraph, its essentially a fact that patriots cheated (AGAIN I DISAGREE). but the nfl rules govern here and they consider it cheating.

so no, there is no defamation case. thats all this is about.
OK bill, let me get you off the hook. The key to your assumption is that the NFL considered what the Pats did in "cameraplacegate" was cheating. The FACT is they did NOT, No where in the punishment letter did the NFL claim the Pats cheated. In fact Goodell is on record at least 2 times (though clearly not enough), stating unequivocally that the Pats DID NOT gain any unfair advantage from the taping they did, (a fact that Jet fans refuse to acknowledge in their diatribes over the years. ;) )

Now I can understand how you and other can come to the conclusion you did, because much like now, the public and the media has no real interest in the facts, truth, or justice. Instead the better STORY was that the Pats were cheating and the media went with it. And, to their great discredit, the NFL, much like they did after the Mort report, made no attempt to change that narrative.

So Bill now that you know that you've lost the linchpin to your basic assumption, will you now admit that you are on the wrong side of this argument?

OK, I've just arrived and I have a couple of questions I hope someone can answer.

1, Has anyone at ESPN acknowledged Storm's blatant misstatement to date?

2., Has anyone at ESPN continued to spread Storm's blatant misstatement as if its true?

3. Has ANYONE in the local or national media called ESPN out for making such a blatant misstatement?

4. Has anyone, in the local or national media started to wonder why ESPN's reporting on this topic is so incredibly biased?

Thanks

Why does this keep getting dug up? It was debunked years ago. Why do they keep trying to change it? I blame Faulk and Warner.

I think it's a combination of 2 things: 1) Casual fans who just heard the story and stopped paying attentions and 2) "Real" fans who just really, really want to believe this story. It also doesn't help that people in the media keep saying it happened and they never get corrected.

On a tangent about this, something that always bothered me was how people, Faulk in particular, claim that the Rams worked on brand new plays in the walk through, but they never say what those plays were. I'm going to re-watch that SB and see if there is anything unusual with how Faulk was used, in terms of alignment and formation. Granted, I don't know the staples of the Rams offense from 2001, but the wrinkles should stand out. With the Patriots, I'm thinking of 3 or 4 years ago when they played Houston in the playoffs and put Hernandez in the backfield for the first time ever. Or the eligible/ineligible formations last year. If there really were brand new plays, there should be some departure from Faulk lining up as a single back or in the I formation.

Hannah Storm is useless in the realm of sports as she's neither knowledgeable or hot. I might have said she should stay in the kitchen but she damn near killed herself operating a gas grill.
