OT: Favre on plane to Minnesota, expected to sign $12M, one-year contract

I agree. I would note that
1) Favre definitely did not want to go through the various training camps.
2) Part of the reason for staying out of camp was to make sure he healed well enough to play.

Favre risked $12M rather than come to camp. In the end, Minny let him have his way, accepting him after camp was over.

I don't see the big deal with him retiring and then un-retiring. Last year the dance revolved around his relationship with GB coaches. He would rather retire than give in last year. In the end, he played for someone else.

At a certain point in their careers, a player can call the shots or retire. Favre has long ago reached that point. He's a HOFer with a bit left in his tank. If he plays as well as did last year, he will bring Minny to the playoffs and then who knows. Minny is a much better team than the jets were last year.

Favre is work aversive. He didn't suffer a brain injury (other than the one he was born with). He could have attended camp on PUP and at least participated in the meetings and finished his rehab work with the team. His doctor told him he was good to go from a shoulder standpoint several weeks ago.

You've apparently learned nothing from the teambuilding that goes on here. If he plays as well as he did last year Minny will find themselves in the same boat the JETS did, on the outside looking in with no starting QB for 2010. They won their division last season, the problem was they didn't have enough at the QB position to capitalize on that in the playoffs. Favre isn't the guy to change that one iota.

2008 was their first division win in 8 seasons and their first playoff berth in 4 years. They won ten games and went 7-2 after the bye so they had finally experienced someting to build on. They just tossed it all for an opportunity to swap a couple of young QB's with ball control issues but remaining upside for a 40 year old legendary turnover machine who skipped camp and has increasingly faded down the stretch while entering his dotage. Not to mention, they had other options at the position...

Can we move this thread? Im sick of Farve, and this thread has nothing to do with the Pats. Ok, im done whining :D

Minnesota is especially going to look like chumps when Cassel is playing well in KC this year and the Favre deal blows up.

Yes, but it sets back the development of Jackson (or potential development) for another year with no guarantee of success. Meanwhile, next year, Lord Allaboutme will have found a way to rip the hearts out of the Viking fans, destroy team chemistry, and the organization will still not have a good up and coming QB to take the reins and lead the team.

Regardless of whatever alleged skills Favre may still retain, he is a cancer on whatever team he joins, and the NFL in general.

Jackson has had his fair shot to develop. It really says something about your quarterbacking skills when the team has to bench you in favor of Gus Frerotte and then bring in the likes if Sage "Helicopter" Rosenfels to compete for your job. After Favre undoubtedly "retires" after this coming season, the Vikings should look into pulling a trade or trading up into the top 10 of the first round for a quarterback who is intelligent and possesses an actual skill set.

Make that IF he retires, since his contract is actually for 2 years and $25M with $12M guaranteed for 2009. Thus guaranteeing we play the same will he, won't he, will they, won't they game next off season. His impending retirement is never "undoubtedly".

*sigh*

You know how they say you should never discuss religion and politics with friends? Well I've learned never to discuss the Favre situation with my friend Jason. When all this garbage started last year we got into it a bit, he blames Ted Thompson for everything, "He ran off the best player the team ever had, yap yap yap."

So I called him last night to see how he was handling the big snooze, and he says now he wants the ol' hillbilly and the Vikes to beat the Packers both games this year, in hopes of getting Ted Thompson fired.

Now I know I can talk smart since the Pats have been doing a pretty good job when it comes to management so it's not the same thing, but can you imagine a Pats fan saying that, if Tom Brady went to the Jets, they'd want the Jets to win?!

Ay carumba. :disagreement:

Charley Walters: Favre should cash in Sept. 13 - TwinCities.com

It's also expected that Jackson will be traded or released by Friday. If the Vikings are able to trade Jackson, it would seem they would prefer to deal him out of the conference. However, because Jackson knows the Vikings' offense, the hapless Detroit Lions could have interest.

The best Minnesota could expect in a Jackson trade would be a seventh-round draft pick. The Vikings used a second-round pick to draft him four years ago.

Baltimore's defense in 2000 was historically good. Like NE's offense in 2007 good.

Minny wont be that good. And Dilfer didn't throw 20 picks like Favre will.

Favre won't throw 20 picks.....he won't make it long enough to do so......unless he somehow stays healthy into early November.

I am going to IMMENSELY enjoy watching this story line unfold!

The world according to Favre waffling timeline from 2001 thru 2009. Condensed version...

March 2, 2001, after signing a contract that made him the NFL's first $100 million player: "I do want to be a Packer for life ... I couldn't envision myself playing with another team ... If that was to ever come up, I would probably just retire."

November 7, 2003: "I don't know if it's going to be this year, next year. I mean, I still think there's a lot left out there for us and a lot left out there for me."

March 31, 2006, Biloxi Sun-Herald: "If I do play this year, it will be my last. There's no doubt about that."

February 3, 2007, quoted by Packers GM Ted Thompson in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel: "I think I'll go one more time."

January 10, 2008, in the Biloxi Sun-Herald, three days before a playoff game against Seattle: "For the first time in three years, I haven't thought this could be my last game. I would like to continue longer."

March 6, 2008: "It's been a great career for me, but it's over ... I don't think I've got anything left to give."

April 3, 2008, asked about Favre coming back, his agent, Bus Cook, tells the Los Angeles Times' Sam Farmer: "That's news to me. I don't think that has anything to do with anything. He's retired, period, point blank."

April 10, 2008, Biloxi Sun-Herald: "I very well could be enticed."

April 25, 2008, before a luncheon honoring his image on the cover of Madden '09: "First of all, I'm not going to keep myself in shape ... There were always second thoughts ... It wasn't ever a clear-cut decision."

August 8, 2008: "I'm here for one reason ... I'm here to help the Jets win."

February 12, 2009: "It's been a wonderful career, I couldn't ask for anything more. It was worth a shot for me to go to New York. I wish I could've played better down the stretch. I didn't.

"It's time to leave."

June 15, 2009, asked by Joe Buck about the Vikings (after his wife had made a deposit on a condo in Minnesota): "It makes a lot of sense because the pieces are in place."

July 29, 2009: "I didn't feel like physically I could play at a level that was acceptable. I would like to thank everyone, including the Packers, Jets and Vikings, but, most importantly, the fans."

August 18, 2009, asked about wearing a Vikings helmet: "It was different. I'm not going to lie to you."

I think he's doing the right thing. He feels that he can still play. Moreover, he wants to still play, I say, let him do his thing.

Yeah, that's pathetic. All the while, this offseason, he could have just said "I'm 40 years old but I have interest in playing for the Vikings. The Vikings have interest in me. I just do not feel like I could go through the rigors of a training camp and still be able to compete through a full season. The Vikings understand this and I will be joining the team after camp is over". What's so wrong with that? And don't give me an explanation of how he would have been dragged through the coals either. The media and the majority of the Minnesota fanbase and the team would have given him a pass simply because he is Brett Favre. He enjoys being an attention whore, bottom line.

This is interesting. The financial as well as emotional fallout from this will outlive Brett or Chilly's tenure in Minnesota. And the GM who brought Rosenfels in is clearly not onboard, ergo when he fires Chilly he'll be in the clear.

The Brett Favre contract technically is a two-year, $25 million deal. Though it's unlikely that he'll receive any of the money that he's due to earn in 2010, he actually will be receiving large chunks of the money he'll earn over the next several months in both 2010 and 2011.

Per a league source, Favre's $12 million base salary for the 2009 season will be paid out in three ways. He'll receive $4 million in the form of periodic paychecks during the upcoming season. He'll also receive lump sums of $4 million in March 2010 and another $4 million in 2011.

The move suggests that the Vikings are low on cash in 2009, and that they are already tapping into future years to pay for Favre's services.

And it marks a dramatic departure from the games that teams used to play in order to spend maximum money in the current year, charging the cash to future years' salary cap calculations.

Simply put, teams previously were cash rich and cap poor. Now, more and more teams are cap rich and cash poor.

The Vikings, for example, still have a little more than $6 million in 2009 cap space, even after counting the full amount of Favre's 2009 salary against it. But the cash to pay Favre isn't there; otherwise, he'd have all of the money before the end of the regular season.

I love that so many people who are "tired" of all the Favre stuff just keep on posting about it.

I'm not tired of it at all. This is going to be great human entertainment.

Almost as good as the Wrecks Ryan circus.

I LOOOOVVVVEEEEE the NFL! This stuff just writes itself.

There you go. THAT is the central reason for Zyggie Wulf to sign the 40 year old Distraction.

Spend $12 million with deferred payments......make $12.5 million upfront in increased season ticket sales (they sold 3,000 yesterday) and team merchandise.

Case closed: The Favre signing has NOTHING to do with football, and everything to do with the short-term cash flow concerns of a failing franchise.

It's an off day. Not much else to talk about.. :)

I thought that was the obvious reason we couldn't say no to Favre. This team is going to be making a drastic amount of money off of this 40 year old has been.

I'll guess you're a Vikings fan? Welcome aboard, glad to have you here, Yfz01!

Then, yes, it will be a SHORT-TERM money maker.

It also ******s the football development of the team in the intermediate-to-long term and takes up a good bit of cap space for someone who will leave the team (football-wise)further in the dumper at the end of this season.

But, yes, Zyggy Wulf bought himself a bit more cash-flow room with this move. Kind of like a home equity cash out loan.

As a fan, you can choose to be excited, or start buying land to invest in in the vicinity of the new stadium in Portland, Oregon or Toronto where they will be moving in the not too distant future when the sugar high wears off from this.

Meanwhile, the New England Patriots have stockpiled 4 draft picks in the first two rounds of the upcoming draft. The future looks as bright as the last decade when you're not in a panic, bailing out a sinking boat.

There's no development to ******, Smessy. You're talking about Favre replacing Jackson and the RosenCopter. It's not like he's keeping Tom Brady on the bench. Unless Favre goes full T.O., this is a no-lose scenario for the Vikings front office. Childress is all in on this, so if the team tanks, they just fire him and bring in the next clown, which will buy them another 2-3 years of fan forgiveness. And, obviously, if it works out, it's money and a happy fan base.

I'm not tired of it at all. It's something to talk about with the season still three weeks away. I welcome it and I think the Vikings will be more entertaining to watch with him under center.

His waffling just drives me up a f'n wall though. It's probably because I get impatient with people that can't make up their minds. That's actually one of my pet peeves.
