Re: OT: Reports: Favre on Vikings plane headed for Minnesota, rumored to join team to
Favre is work aversive. He didn't suffer a brain injury (other than the one he was born with). He could have attended camp on PUP and at least participated in the meetings and finished his rehab work with the team. His doctor told him he was good to go from a shoulder standpoint several weeks ago.
You've apparently learned nothing from the teambuilding that goes on here. If he plays as well as he did last year Minny will find themselves in the same boat the JETS did, on the outside looking in with no starting QB for 2010. They won their division last season, the problem was they didn't have enough at the QB position to capitalize on that in the playoffs. Favre isn't the guy to change that one iota.
2008 was their first division win in 8 seasons and their first playoff berth in 4 years. They won ten games and went 7-2 after the bye so they had finally experienced someting to build on. They just tossed it all for an opportunity to swap a couple of young QB's with ball control issues but remaining upside for a 40 year old legendary turnover machine who skipped camp and has increasingly faded down the stretch while entering his dotage. Not to mention, they had other options at the position...
I agree. I would note that
1) Favre definitely did not want to go through the various training camps.
2) Part of the reason for staying out of camp was to make sure he healed well enough to play.
Favre risked $12M rather than come to camp. In the end, Minny let him have his way, accepting him after camp was over.
I don't see the big deal with him retiring and then un-retiring. Last year the dance revolved around his relationship with GB coaches. He would rather retire than give in last year. In the end, he played for someone else.
At a certain point in their careers, a player can call the shots or retire. Favre has long ago reached that point. He's a HOFer with a bit left in his tank. If he plays as well as did last year, he will bring Minny to the playoffs and then who knows. Minny is a much better team than the jets were last year.
